Get the telescope out beyond Jupiter and things get way better.
Which makes me ask a curious (and probably dumb) question: Why didn't they just send the JWST into a hyperbolic orbit anyway? I can't see what they gain by having it at L2 except perhaps better bandwidth rates.
I've been thinking for a while that USB sticks (or something that evolves from them) are eventually going to be the new "physical media" for music, and possibly for video once they get big and fast enough (of course they are already making inroads in that direction, but I'm thinking of CD obsolescence in particular).
Certainly things seem to be moving in that direction - and that's good - if someone comes out with a stick that has the memory capacity of the newer DVDs, I'll not care what it costs:)
(Actually, in my job I'm frequently heard using various forms of the phrase "who the * did this?". It's part of the job description of a hardware store monkey:)
When you reach middle age, and the end starts to heave into sight on the horizon of your life, you start to get very, very uncomfortable about the idea that you might have devoted your precious time to an unworthy cause.
Which is supportive evidence that your argument is too biased in itself to consider.
How is helping to produce freely given and very secure software for EVERYONE ELSE TO USE FREELY an unworthy cause? Indeed, one could (and I do) consider it "charitable work".
Oh, and I'm on the approach ramp to middle age; and my feelings about helping only get stronger year after year.
It's not the fact of bias that you're not considering, it's the *reasons* behind the bias. (Yeah, I've heard a lot of people say that altruism doesn't pay the bills. But as a blanket statement, that's bullshit).
Also, have another, seperate CD or DVD with all the Microsoft patches and updates on them. Major, MAJOR timesavers, especially as a relatively upatched windows XP box can be compromised within minutes of connecting to the net if you don't alter it's startup services first. Best to simply patch it while unconnected first. (An external USB harddrive is an even better way, almost as portable)
Also make sure to do regular backups - create a saved project for them with a scheduler reminder to open up and burn that project. MyDocs, Email, Registry, and various other things (it can get to be quite a list:)
Thoroughly scan *them* too...
And, if you have the ability to, image your hard drive before reinstalling. This can save many of the "Oh, Damn, I Forgot That" headaches later on.

If you're using a removeable battery, you have to constantly buy new batteries as you continue to use the device, or swap and charge if you're using rechargables.
I do a lot of photography (hobby, not biz).
I prefer swappable rechargeable batteries. That way, I get to choose what brand I use. (I've noticed that some brands of rechargeables aren't as tolerant of hot weather as others are, for example).
I realize that built-in rechargeable batteries for a lot of equipment can be had third party, but that's not the same as being able to go to a local store and buy the brand that works...
Global climate data indicates that the warming trend we are currently on is accelerating rather than flattening, as most previous ones have at this temperature region in the last few million years.
Take a good, hard look at the graphs provided by a couple other posters in this story-thread. They're very instructive.
Postulate: CO2 increases create more algae blooms by making the surface conditions more favorable for them;
then
?? Would the blooms themselves act as enough of a sink to reverse the trend? How much would they effect the atmospheric levels? Has this (spontaneous blooms) been factored into climate models?
I posted a question to this effect on a serious climatology forum some years ago, but didn't get much of an answer. Know of any good reading along these lines? Google hasn't been of much help.:(
As to local fisheries, I suspect that their fishing practices have enough of an effect as to drown out (no pun intended) any effect from algae blooms, at least over the long run - but that's really just speculation on my part I guess.
You're right about the nutrient levels, but just about any coast on this planet save the glacier locked ones is going to have high levels of nitrogen and other nutrients - we're so busy dumping artificial fertilizers into our water supplies, we must have changed the chemical balance of the oceans somewhat in the last couple hundred years. That's my gut feeling, anyway. Actually, it'd make sense that the more life that exists, the more it's byproducts get washed out into the Big Soup... etc.:)
The fact that more water is evaporating indicates that the Earth's system has gained heat (from the sun)
No, it means that the *atmosphere* is changing, not the entire Earth. There's a reason it's called the "solar constant" because it very nearly is (and a good thing, too, or we'd not be here to argue about it:)
If the atmosphere heats up, it's capacity for holding vaporized water increases...
Yeah, and the global retreat of tens-millennia-old glaciers is just another glitch in the Matrix, right?
You can argue history all you want, but the *historical scientific* evidence that we've painstakingly collected clearly shows that we are in the middle of an unprecedented warming trend.
To argue that we're not at least partially responsible for it flies in the face of nearly all our understanding of the mechanisms involved.
IANAEE:) so this is likely a dumb question, but why can't you use individual lasing chambers for each frequency you're using so they each have their own independent medium?
but I think you were out of line using words like thoughtless or stupefied, especially if you enjoy spending lots of time on other activities, like TV or video games.

Especially when we're busy burning/razing most of the CO2 consumers (forests, especially old ones).
I wonder what effect oceanic algae blooms will have on CO2? Aren't they large CO2 consumers themselves?
