Watching All Six Star Wars Movies Simultaneously
DavidSJ writes "WeirdHat created a video of all Star Wars movies being played simultaneously, side-by-side, and then watched it. Some notable finds: the first appearance of Palpatine in The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones is on the same frame. Also, the Jedi Rocks music in Episode VI provides amusing accompaniment to the Anakain/Obi-Wan vs. Dooku fight in Episode III."

I know I'm out of date here and all what with having only watched the first three original films (which I was not particularly impressed by) int he late 1990s, when I was about 20 and having only seen one of the three new films.
However, what on earth draws this kind of thoughtless, stupified devotion to such a mediocre franchise? I'm not saying the movies sucked - but they're only great in the way that Knight Rider seemed like a great TV show when you were five years old and doesn't hold up today, when you're 30.
Roger Waters denied setting it up that way, but it would be genius if he did.
Heh.
It's not useless if you have as much time to kill as anyone who spends time doing this kind of thing obviously does.
I mean, how did this guy pay attention to all 6 screens at once, if he has a 1-track mind??
Now I have something to do this weekend! God, I need a life away from Slashdot.
I wonder how long before someone "discovers" a Da Vinci-code-syle pattern in the Star Wars movies fortelling the future of civilization? After all, Star Wars is this generation's Bible - complete with people who only acknowlegde the divinity of the "Old Testament" (original trilogy) ;)

Slow news day, is it? Honestly, this is one of the most ridiculous (i.e., uninteresting, uninspired, un-newsworthy) stories I've seen on Slashdot in quite a while.

Is that WierdHat hasn't been laid since episode IV.
Wouldn't the people with "too much free time" be those who watched all six films SEPARATELY? i.e. the ones who spent 12 hours watching them all instead of two?
Comparatively, this seems pretty efficient to me.
what an amusingly little pattern recognition machine we have upstairs.
this post has been brought to you by the number 23.
Ah, the "Jack of all trades, Master of none" defence in the name of efficiency. Nice.
So you think this was a valuable use of time, watching six films at once? I'd love to see how you studied in high school and college.
If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Think about it: It's a funny movie, but it has no gags or outright jokes. It's a romantic movie, with only like 2 quick kisses. It's even an action movie, but there aren't even all of the expolosions like in a Lethal Weapon movie. Every good guy gets the crap kicked out of him, and you still leave it with a hopeful feeling. I have only discussed the story, and haven't even begin to touch the vast differences between the beauty of the worlds created by these people.
I realize that you have a right to an opinion, but I think you were out of line using words like thoughtless or stupefied, especially if you enjoy spending lots of time on other activities, like TV or video games.
I cried real tears when Li Mu Bai died.
The article might seem mostly useless, but it's quite refreshing after weeks of bad science bullshit articles on Slashdot.

I know its "news for nerds, stuff that matters" and while this article clearly fits the first claim, it really fails the second..
I find that news often shows up more than a day earlier on other sites such as technocrat.net.
And then theres the posts of either flamebait news or completely useless crap.
I suppose if I wasted hours doing some mediocre yet geeky thing I could get it on the front page too?
Also, keep in mind editors, that a LOT of slashdot readers these days are not diehard OSS fans nor Microsoft haters. They just post a few hundred angry messages when you put such articles up...
Of course if its been decided that your readers can go **** themselves, then please ignore all my previous comments..

Again, the starwars movies might have seemed amazing back in 1977, but how can you watch them with a straight face today? It's difficult. It's similar to trying to watch Buck Rogers or Battle Star Galactica (the original) with a straight face. The only thing remotely good about the original three was Harrison Ford, because he played that role just perfect (and with a hinted edge of Iniana Jones to come).
And I can't even comment on the most recent films, except that I hope they improved after the first one... which... was just attrocious.
I'm not saying Star Wars isn't good for a boring saturday afternoon. But to watch it more than once? Or repeatedly? Or obsessively? Hell, RHPS folks make even more sense than that. RHPS is a crappy film, too - but at least they indulge in the campiness. Star Wars folks actually believe that Star Wars is the ultimate cinematic masterpiece and that it's such a great and unique (though ripped off) story.
So if you wouldn't call watcdhing all six films simultaneously "thoughtless" what WOULD you call it?
Too much time on my hands. I got too much time on my hands...
That Styx song was the first thing to come to mind, but heck, watching all six films simultaneously is actually quite a time saver. In the hurried future, perhaps this will be the preferred mode of receiving entertainment! Hmmm, where did I put those Star Trek Season One DVDs?
To the making of books there is no end, so let's get started
K.I.T.T. had a V8 engine... what did C3PO have... a fuel cell?
You may be on to something there.
But you have to realize that he had to BUILD that movie also. And at best, he'd have to have lugged six TVs all together, getting them all going in sync. But considering that he knows the Emperor Palpatine entrance to the frame, and TFS (summary) says that he encoded a film with all 6 movies on it...
I'd honestly say the guy spent more time than the 5 shorter movies thinking this crazy stuff up, and in all the logistics.
Anyways, the expression "Too much freetime" refers not to the efficiency of time spent, but rather what that time was spent on. If it's outright frivalous and stupid, then it's too much freetime.
I mean, I can only imagine that someone with tons of idle time on their hands would even THINK of this idea...
I am unamerican, and proud of it!
Too bad I don't have the equipment to facilitate actually doing this myself. Mind you, I believe I'd have to take it to truly ridiculous extremes with all the TV spinoff material (the Droids, Ewoks and Clone Wars cartoons, the live-action Ewok movies, The Star Wars Holiday Special). I'm sure I can scare more people away from me permanently if I try hard enough...
I hate all the new movies, but the first three are still great if imperfect movies.
Comparing it to Battlestar Galactica is a bit of a reach. I loved that show growing up. I recently bought it. Somehow in my memories of the show, I forgot about the trip to the cannibal disco planet. lol

this is the nerdyist thing yet...
I still remember my first long Star Trek movie night with the first 6 movies in one night at the local movie, with friends and breakfast in the morning. This time I will organize the same at home for a Star Wars night, with good food and drinks. There are still a lot of people who have not seen all Star Wars movies yet. But somehow I doubt any of my friends likes to watch all 6 movies side-by-side, though.
This truly is the nerdiest thing I have EVER seen.
A slashdotter who didn't build his own computer is like a Jedi who didn't build his own lightsaber.
C-3PO was a pussy anyway. Everybody knows that.
But KITT would probably arrive in Mos Eisley and his wheels would do that Back To The Future 2 hover-conversion thing, and he'd fly into space and blow away some TIE fighters with his hidden laser cannons and stuff. But he'd probably wind up getting swayed by the Dark Side of the Force, and become Darth Vader's personal fighter. But he'd watch Vader's back - there'd be none of that crap with the Millennium Falcon flying out of nowhere to shoot his wingman, or his other dur-head wingman running into Vader, KITT would do some evasion and blow Luke to hell, then turn around and blow away Solo and the Wookie - and then Lando, for good measure. I know Lando hadn't gotten involved in the story yet at that point but KITT would've been all over that. It's called a pre-emptive strike. AI knows how to get it done.

Instead of the stupid special editions wheey Gweedo fires first. dumb dumb dumb. I am keeping my old VHS just so I can watch the pure and correct versions of Star Wars. Hell no I don't watch them with a straight face. They're good fun.
They might not dramatic masterpieces, very true. But they were hugely influential from a special effects point of view, and are just a treat to watch in a Saturday-afternoon-serial kind of way.
So yeah, watching it with a straight face is watching it wrong, IMHO.

For a long time now this site has been falling but the editors won't listen. I've tried time and time again to get something going but the editors just won't listen. Even the slashbot groupthink here won't take it. For instance you've already been modded redundant and off topic as will I most likely. Like any entrenched bureaucracy they hate maverick thoughts and dissident opinions. For me, /. is the ultimate in hypocritical sites, they claim to be the bastion of free thought and open source philosophy but soon as you want to get things moving again, rather than stagnate, they'll come down on you like a ton of bricks.
Slashdot is slowly becoming more like Microsoft: conservative, slow and copying other peoples products (read: news). Whilst Digg is becoming what the open source movement is really about: speed, openess, wisdom of the crowds, and people empowered news reporting.
I imagine the typical responses though: "Don't let the door hit yourself on the way out" or "If you don't like it leave." This is the level of rhetoric and moderation that /. has become.

I've found the DSotM and Oz sync to be neat in some sections, but its more of a vibe sync then if you use Alice in Wonderland and Floyd's The Wall. If you have the original album (and I think the original pressing of the CD also has it), then look on the back, there are 1 or 2 songs with little marks at the end (CNumb is one of them), these evidently should be skipped to maintain the sync. If done correctly, near the end of the movie, the card's march to the beat of Run Like Hell which is *really* cool. I've got a DVDR which has it done. Also, the album and movie (after credits) end like 3 seconds appart compared to the DSotM and Oz one where you can repeat the album 2.5 or however many times (although only the first part really syncs well). Not perfect, but IMHO, its a better fit.

This reminds me of a little feature on the Criterion Collection laserdisc release of Robocop called "Robocop in Two Minutes" or something like that. The screen was divided into very many little windows, each displaying, in real time, a portion of the movie such that you see and hear every part of the film in two minutes. It was a nifty, yet weird little feature. IIRC, this little feature was not ported to the Criterion Collection DVD version of the film.
And, of course, the best part of ESB:
Lucas didn't direct.
And does that include that stereotype?
I'm sorry, but that sort of argument is rather hypocritical. It doesn't matter if they do "have the power" as it is just as damaging.
And BTW, since this post was off-topic (and you admit it is) then what's with the use of the +1 karma bonus?
Admittedly, I was a synch nerd for quite some time. Yes, Dark Side of the Rainbow, or DSOTR, as it is referred to by synch nerds, is probably the best. Jovian Echoes (2001: A Space Odyssey, Jupiter & Beyond the Infinite + Echoes) is probably second best, if only because it's much shorter in duration.
http://www.synchronicityarkive.com/ is the place where the synch nerds hang out. Here, you may even come upon shared synch projects on which many people collaborate, like Shared Fantasia. While these aren't quite as amazing as DSOTR because they're done mainly one or two songs at a time instead of a whole album, it becomes obvious that decent synchs aren't too hard to come by. So, it's all just up to coincedence or collective consciousness or what have you.
I recently discovered that if you play any two songs by Dido simulateneously, you will find that they are in fact all practically identical. Of course, you don't actually have to play them at the same time to notice this.
Right now, I am almost done watching all six movies back to back (ROTJ is next up) and I take a quick break, and what do I see but a Slashdot article about watching all six simultaneously. =)

"After reassessing everything in the movies laboriously, I have come to the conclusion that Darth Vader is the true hero of the original Star Wars trilogy. In this analysis, I generally consider only the movies themselves (Star Wars (A New Hope if you believe Lucas), Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi). For this presentation, we will be discussing them much in the same way the Thermians in Galaxy Quest viewed transmissions of Earth-based TV shows, as historical documents.
I have, at times, garnered some supporting info from the Expanded Universe of novels, comics, games, trading cards, and the many tech and art books on the subject. I delve a little into the new movies (Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith (or their more appropriate titles, 'Clone Wars' and 'Rise of the Sith')), but I tend to view them as a re-telling of history. A fabricated story told to the peoples of the galaxy after the events in the original trilogy. This analysis doesn't include the 'Dark Luke' saga of comics and books chronicling the events after Return of the Jedi. Many have pointed out that Luke's turn toward evil in those stories would support the theories presented here. My contention is that Luke was evil to begin with, that he is the true villain of the Star Wars universe."

Meaning implies an intelligence attempting to communicate through pattern. Otherwise, patterns simply 'are'.
Even without an attempt to communicate, however, recognizing a pattern in a seemingly chaotic system allows one to become aware of an underlying structure, from which various further insights and knowledge can be obtained.
Sometimes patterns will show up in ways which suggest underlying structures which do not fit into current orthodox thinking. Such patterns challenge people to grow and to consider new possibilities which exist beyond the boundaries of orthodox thinking.
People who feel the need to ridicule all that falls outside the orthodox boundaries of 'reality' (as dictated by the authority figures), are those who will be unable to function when those same boundaries fail to keep out the wolves.
Sticking one's head in the sand only makes one's bottom a juicy target, and severely limits the range one can move, see and explore.
Not all patterns are worth exploring, it is true. But many people hide from extremely significant patterns at their own peril.

I find the argument for Intelligent Design to be one of those ironies which makes me want to shake somebody. --Aspects of the argument are on the right track, but for all the entirely wrong reasons. For instance, when an entity like Monsanto genetically engineers a crop species, such as corn, I wouldn't blame the result on that silly cult version of 'God' the Christians are so hopelessly enthralled with. Being the herd-control program religion is. . .
Hm. Or now that I think about it. . . But then people keep suggesting I invest in tin-foil.
Funny.
The same mechanics of the Intelligent Design argument could be used to argue that Religion is a giant mind-control project. --How could anything so invasive, destructive and wide-spread not be the result of a deliberate effort to curtail human awareness?

> I wonder if using the CD instead of an album would screw up the timing.
Unlikely unless the vinyl was snagging or the record player motor was worn, but something that definitely would affect the timing is watching in Europe or Australia where they have the PAL video system.
PAL runs at 25 fps (vs. NTSC which runs at 29.97 fps). This means that for easier compatibility, most DVDs are re-timed to run at 25 fps instead of the cinematic 24 fps. The result is a 4% speedup.
Usually unnoticeable, but for something like this, it would throw off the timing.
