    Well, thank you :)

The real reason I put that in my sig is that I can't figure out what is going on (and before I proxy block it, I'd like to) and I was hoping it'd spark someone to explain.

*Every single slashdot window* that I've loaded for the last few days hangs on the requests from images-aud. Every one. Whatever they are doing, it's hellishly irritating.

Do you know what is up with this? I asked on the IRC channel but nobody there seemed to know.

The only thing I can think of (and it's probably way off mark) is that they are trying to make life hell on those of us who block images/advertising... nah...doesn't make sense.

Call me stupid, or whatever, but this is bugging hell out of me.

I think that is the single biggest problem we face with existing computer crime legislation - neither the legislators nor the judges understand what it is that the law is actually saying.

Well, yes, but the real problem is that many of the legislators, judges, and lawyers don't understand the details of what it is they are dealing with... in some senses you can't blame them, it's really only a generation or two since all this started to become real issues; but on the other hand, these people are dealing with legal cases in which they *should* be at least cognizant with the basics (many of them are older and didn't grow up with it, not that "ignorance is an excuse" :); and lots of competing tripe from so-called (and often biased) "expert witnesses" and...god, one could go on for hours; witness the SCO publicity barrage.

The gripping hand is that it's probably going to take generations for the legislation, law processes and education to catch up. Which really means that there are a lot of innocent people who are going to be in for a world of hurt in the meantime.

The upside is that those concerned with it now have public/private forums in which to voice their concerns in a much easier way - if open speech on the internet isn't curtailed.

I absolutely agree. If nothing else, by making his situation public, that puts pressure on the company in question, and provides for many viewpoints on the situation to be aired where the people prosecuting and defending the case will see them. That is *exactly* how participation in the system works (fuck voting, it's meaningless; it's direct participation thru airing your views publicly that really matters)

Sure, a fair number of those contacts will be bunk, but many of them will contain useful information for his defense - as the first few comments to this story did.

I think the real point is that some people may want it, while many others don't.

So build the capability into it, but don't turn it on by default. Let users know they can. Those who want it, will. Those who don't, won't.

Let those paranoid enough have their choice, yet let those of us who don't want it have it completely disabled. Fair enough?

(I hate the whole damned idea of tracking, too, but some people won't - or don't, at least with respect to stolen laptops, eh?)

Parent does make a good point. If one is wearing really thick clothing (like, say, a insulated winter jacket) it's likely that the taser probes won't make good contact. A decent leather jacket may even be enough. Leather is pretty tough.

That said, I've always wondered if a good defense against a taser might not be a conducting layer (worn beneath light upper layer clothing) that is hardy enough to stop and seat the probes, and which is connected to a metal plate at the bottom of one's shoes, thereby grounding the charge. I would think you'd get tingled, but it wouldn't be debilitating.

I've never read about such a thing (and I'm obviously not willing to conduct the experiment :) - I've had a few 110 shocks and one much higher, argh) but does anyone here know enough to tell me whether it would work? I'm fairly cognizant with electricity but not enough in the high voltage realms tasers work in.

In a self-defense situation, myself, I'd prefer something that can stop them more permanently if necessary - but I'm old-fashioned :)

Let's be really honest, here; the whole 'ban gays' initiative is nothing more than extreme Christian fundamentalism. No amount of logic or moral appeal is every going to change what those who are intolerant to any other lifestyle but their own feel about it. This isn't exactly a new issue, either.

Myself, I'd go so far as to say that the whole fanatical dedication to the "nuclear" family has probably done more to harm it than just leaving the whole issue alone would have. The whole argument is just plain stupid. WTF business is it of ANYONE how two other people live, ESPECIALLY if they don't even know those people?

Oh, to head off the trolls:

    1) No, I'm not homosexual. I have friends who are, tho, and I support them in living however they want to. I'm not religious, but I was raised so, and I seem to remember Jesus talking about tolerance towards those who don't live like you, but who are still moral.

    2) No, I'm not some "family expert". I don't think one really needs the opinion of "experts" or government officials, or religious people, to raise good kids. Make of that what you will.

    3) I'm seriously of the opinon that the whole concept of marriage should be a covenant between two (or three, or whatever) people and/or their church, and should not be any province of the government at any scale, federal, state, local - WHATEVER. It's none of their goddamned business. We have something called seperation of church and state in this country partially for this exact reason. (Yes, I know it can be argued that marriage is not primarily a Christian institution - but in this particular context, WRT to our administration, it is.) The only winners in the legal venue of marriage in this country have been the divorce lawyers.

Get the fucking government out of it. Completely.
