  1. Re:Bill Gates once said... on The Most Incorrect Assumptions In Computing? · · Score: 1

it's all in the way it was implied. The early net wouldn't have gotten off the ground if it wasn't for funding that Gore had backed. Basically an analogy would be if a congressman said that they gave welfare back to single mothers. They say this because they pushed a bill that included those initiatives, the same way that Gore pushed the money towards networking research for the US Military and Educational institutions.

  3. Re:Product Activation thru the Net isn't there yet on Symantec Hit by Product Activation Glitch · · Score: 0

i just wanted to interject that cable isn't exactly out of the woods when it comes to ease.

Example: i just signed up to Comcast for cable internet (used to be with charter before i moved, which by the way is AWESOME when it comes to making it easy for the customer wanting cable internet). I was forced to "activate" my account through the net. This allows only the computer with my matching MAC address to be the only one able to access the net. Anyway, i activated, and then plugged in my router (didn't work with it used inline for activation).
So what do i get when i plug it in??? a pop-up saying that another computer is already using my account with a different MAC address! (the F&*king router!) Anyway, this is a perfectly legit usage of their fair usage policy.

    Conclusion, Comcast sucks.

Another conclusion: Once something "slightly" better comes along for broadband, i'm switching. Comcast lost another customer cause they made it more than a hassle for me to even use their service.

they already do. The demo'd Elvis album in the video stream shows it costing $9.95 for what looked to be about 20 songs.

from watching the video stream, if you buy the full album (instead of just 1 song) it is a different rate. The demo shown was that of an Elvis album priced at $9.95 USD. This album had about 20 tracks on it, totalling roughly $.50 a song.

correction to your statement.. "flash" is sooo not proprietary... the .swf file is a totally open format, ready for programs to be made to utilize it.

sure, macromedia does make a tool to make .swf files (aka:flash), but so does adobe (aka:live motion), and so does electric rain (aka:swift3d), and many many programs are able to write the format (illustrator, many many 3d programs, quicktime, etc...)

so all in all, "flash" is not open, but the .swf file format is 100% usable.

Most people on the web that see flash sights, yes, you're seeing the crap ones. Kids and programmers that create these pages don't know good design from a head up their ass, (yes, programmers aren't known for making things visually appealing).

Check out some good flash. Read any Friends of ED book. Check out Club Sandwich or Deskforce.

It's these and similar sites that are making headway with Flash.
Don't Judge a technology just because it's corporate.

BTW, the .swf format is open for anyone to make a program that creates it. Adobe has LiveMotion, Electric Rain has Swift3D, and Macromedia has Flash....
all of these create swf files. Hah! Just create one for your own use in linux and you guys will be happy.

Obviously, /. is going to have many different forms of reply's on this subject just cause everyone here wants to make everything backward compatible.
C'mon! live in the now. Without giving up some backward compatability we'll never move forward. (eg: MacOS X trying to move from OS9 and under. It's hard, slow, and gradually they hope that everyone that used 9 and under will move to 10. No more being stuck in emulation of the old).

As a graphic designer, i personally think that flash is the coolest tool around... there is MUCH to be said for ease of use with plain HTML. It all depends on who your audience is.

Personally, for all the people that are going to rip on flash, eat this:
once you have the plug in, Flash is simply one of the most efficient ways to get content over the web with a small amount of bandwidth.
    Simple. Straight forward. Vector graphics.

  16. As A student on Innovative Uses for Educational Technology Funds? · · Score: 1

I personally am one of the students that has to pay for these tech fees. I would think it would be a situation if my fee's ended up paying for a larger pipeline (as others have suggested) or wireless access on campus. Granted, my campus already has a network capable of serving it's 8500 students + faculty, but still, spending it bandwidth? please. Most of these tech fee's are put in a fund, to be distributed later to each department. There is a committee from each dept that decides what to do with these fees, including students and faculty (usually NOT the IT dept of the university). As a graphic design major, i had input on what to do with these. We bought a couple of digital projection systems, high quality flatbed/drum scanners, as well as many digital camera's and DV cams. Really, it all depends on your department and your needs/wants. All the talk about more bandwidth and wireless networks here don't help your education any. There are just a cool resource to be able to use. In reality, these services aren't paid by the tech fees for the department anyway, they are paid by a general computer access fee anyway. If wireless networks help my education, sure, but personally it doesn't help the quality of my education.
