  1. Re:How much editorial oversight is enough? on When Wikipedia Fails · · Score: 1

It seems that ultimatelly it all plays down to the need to control. imdb used to do in the tiny sector that it covers a pretty good job, however it is obvious that behind it stands a corporation with rules and principles (amazon) and an industry (movie biz), that are both desperate to stay in control, and extend it over.

on the other hand you have the world's opinion in a free and less censored form. there were many attempts to "teach" wikipedia to become more editor-friendly, but they fail because they miss the essence of wikipedia. Comparing the growth sizes of the two dbs, it's clear to me that imdb will either open, or die.

In a science fiction story, there's a mind test to pass: to be placed into a spacesuit with all what life requires (water/food tube etc), and abandoned somewhere in inter-stars space, left there without communication for an undetermined amount of time. Everywhere around just silent and cold stars. Feeling so out-side of humanity is an interesting challenge, and it's also interesting the solution that the author found to this test.

I'm surprised how people miss the novelty effect here. Once the mind gets used to the the human eye thing, the whole "watch" effect will be null.

what happens here is that two media giants are trying their muscles one on another. we and our pitiful little chat here makes nothing but inflate this media balloon even more. My humble opinion is that nothing really happened, and all this simulated fight draws nothing but more media attention to the contenders.

  7. noise reductor: make a hole in the wall!! on Beginning Of the End For PC Noise · · Score: 2, Funny

The easiest way, and also maybe the healthiest way to avoid this first generation long-time exposure to PC radiations is to make a hole in the wall and place the PC in another room. All cables to pass through this hole, one gains much more working space and all becomes surprisingly quiet! Might be that a good percent of work related stress is subconsciously caused by computer noise.

  8. Re:Hmmmmm.... on Google Sued Over Click Fraud · · Score: 3, Interesting

google does not employ any click patterns analysis, and fraud you have to both expect, plan, pay for, and fight against; mostly by yourself.

I had a one week adwords saga. The bottom line was that if fraud exists, and the claim is right they do react, but one has to act on it, not wait for the PPC carrier to discover it.

Then since this core flaw exists, great media-opportunist companies appear and sue google in order to gain media exposure. this kind of news should become no news soon enough!

  9. iGoogle, or "clutter it yourself" on Google's New Personalized Homepage · · Score: 1, Insightful

It's a really clever approach to the yahoo-like cluttered all-in-one environment. Basically you get to the cluttered environment by stuffing pieces yourself. Google avoids the yahoo trap by giving power to the user.

well the world press is doing the same, kissing various parts of the newly defined google virtual body. this is one other reason why the GOOG shares stay up like this.

A fully developed RSS reader is not something google recently purchased. I'd wonder if they will go on releasing a crappy orkut-like dead-end app, or purchase some real RSS aggregator
