  1. Re:Seriously on TiVo Usage Info Collected For Sale · · Score: 1

I have the same functionality as Tivo with my TV tuner video capture board and a honking great hard drive (3x80Gb).

Same functionality?!? Certainly if you only watch three channels. But, TiVo does more than digitally record television shows.

I have TiVo looking for any documentary about two topics I'm interested in: Titanic and Egypt. I don't care what channel the shows are on. And TiVo will look and record them, when available.

Also, I like Nicholas Cage. And TiVo was told to record all Nicholas Cage movies. Is this functionality available with just a TV tuner and a huge hard drive?

Oh, and check out the TiVo Hack FAQ. Yes, you can upgrade the disk in the box. There's more to TiVo than just recording shows like a VCR.

Apparently, you haven't really learned the game yet. Wake up at 3 to be ready by 7??? My sims wake up at 6, car arrives at 7, the sims leave at 7:30. Just enough time for bathroom and breakfast. (The rest of their needs are handled at night.)

Actually, you need the Livin' Large add-on and the heart-shaped vibrating bed to get them "get it on". Just vibrate, relax, and join. [speaking from experience]

  4. Appelate Court Market Confusion on Second Thoughts: Microsoft on Trial · · Score: 1

I think one of the problems with the two markets is because of what the trial is about: Microsoft used its "platform" monopoly to gain a monopoly on the "browser" market. So, mentioning two markets makes sense.

Also, I'm confused as to who is Microsoft's consumers. Didn't we learn during the Microsoft Refund Day that computer users weren't Microsoft's consumers? That's because most computer users got their copy of Windows from purchasing their computer. So, computer users are the consumers of the computer manufacturers. It's the computer manufacturers who are Microsoft's consumers. And it is the computer manufacturers who stated that they've been harmed from Microsoft's actions.

As a primary/sole OS? Yes.. I have a family of four and three of them are using paid deluxe versions of Corel. I'm the exception. Of course, their computer needs are small. They all have a copy of WordPerfect Office 8 for Linux, and use Netscape for Internet access. And, although they have all seen by Gnome desktop on a pure Debian installation, none of them want to switch.

If Borland/Inprise do with Linux Delphi what they've done for Windows Delphi, part of it will be "free" -- specifically the VCL code. And, no, it's not just API calls either.

  7. Delphi and Open Source on Delphi for Linux · · Score: 1

I'm not surprised about Delphi being so far in the lead within the Linux community. With sites like the Delphi Super Page and Torry's Delphi Pages, many Delphi users create new components and distribute them openly (sometimes under the GPL) for others to use and, yep, modify.

This is different from the VB community, who appear to follow the Microsoft philosophy. I have been aided by these "free" Delphi components and even applications, and I have also contributed back.

As to those who criticize Delphi as not a "real language", I'd like an explanation. Many excellent applications have been written in Delphi/Pascal. What makes a "real language"?

  8. Messaging integration on Messaging Software Wars · · Score: 1

Gee, attempting to choose the lesser of two evils. But, in this case, I'll have to side with AOL. America Online knows what Microsoft is capable of. First, create a messaging client. Second, add it to all new applications (for team support, of course). And, finally, integrate it into the operating system, thereby killing AIM and ICQ.

It's Microsoft's pattern, and I'm so glad that Microsoft finally attempted to go against the only company, at this time, who has the power to fight back.

  9. VB - Closed; Delphi - Sorta open on Visual Basic book author gives up the language · · Score: 1

One of my problem with VB was its closeness. At least with Delphi, I got the source to the VCL objects, which I could look at, understand, and even modify if I so chose. This was true starting with Delphi 1. And, with the Delphi Super Page, developers were sharing their components, many times with the source.

That's what kept me with Delphi, and turned me off of VB.
