The RIAA are slowly killing off themselves here, back in the napster days, I bought CDs just to get the songs I found in high quality...

There's also a rumour that microsoft is preparing $30 windows to combat this as well, but somebody who wants windows in thailand would probably get a pirated one for $2 bucks anyway.
there's actually a legitimate reason for regional coding, staggered release of movies are different in different countries due to holiday periods and such, but apart from that, i don't see why they need to put it on things like music dvds
Not really, not all countries have the same holiday period, stuff like kiddies movies that depends upon the school holiday. Staggered releases is a reasonable marketing tools in some case.

With a project of this scale, the would probably write their own licence.
