I'm going to posit that kids are not getting stupider these days, it's just that when we were young, we just didn't know how *stupid* most of our classmates were.
Edison actually took long naps throughout the day. So he probably did get about the normal amount of sleep per day, just not all in one chunk.
FF8 would've been a better plot for the movie. But oh well. It's got everything.
