If you can dig up the old distribution of the AvantGo client it goes directly to the sites and grabs pages; no AvantGo server needed with exactly the same result.

I'm a Brit living in the US and the difference in having cameras in public is really noticeable, expecially with crime. In England if some kid gets abducted or a car bomb goes off within a day there are pictures of the suspects or victim's last movements on national television. We're also not talking about those grainy black and white 2 fps cameras they have in small stores here; these are (normally) of a really high quality. If I got mugged in the subway in Philly would there be any chance of them catching them? No chance. If you're not doing anything wrong, why get all strung up on the so called invasion of your privacy? I get the impression that people in the US are so into defending their "civil liberties" that they push back on these issues before really considering the benefits. On a related topic, I saw a while ago (on Wired I think) a website that offered maps around NYC for people who wanted to avoid cameras on any nature (security cameras/ones in stores/ones attached to ATMs), so people are obviously getting excited about this already...

I'm around Philly (norr1.pa) and since the switch my connection is blazingly quick (200KB/s+ for HTTP downloads occasionally). The idea that cable modem performance slopes off quickly with large multi-user usage is mostly a myth.

  7. Re:How is it, then . . . on The Laid-off Techie · · Score: 1

There is a massive difference in working for a big company than some small pimping firm that has financed your H1. The big multi-nationals have done it a thousand times and treat you with respect (I get a little more than the east coast prevailing wage for a 3+yr programming position), but there are too many stories of people getting mass imported (expecially from India) and getting royally screwed - emotionally blackmailed to stay for the pimping company, getting payed way below the prevailing wage, "paying" too much tax to the company etc. Don't forget that new H1 laws allow you to change employers within 10 days - you previously had to go through a whole new application to change. If you're thinking of coming over on an H1 try to get a permanent position rather than a contracting one as you're in for a rough ride otherwise...
