  1. Paid comments on Do Comments On Web Pages Ruin Science? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I don't think that open comments systems can survive the onslaught of paid comments. If "winning" means having more comments (say) opposing global climate change than supporting it, that is very cheap to arrange if you have a modest amount of cash (or a suitable number of committed followers). Such tactics render the comments section value subtracting, and it is no surprise if they get turned off over time.

That is especially true if there is not a strong community present on the site. Slashdot has that, and so it is doing better than most sites.

This will work the first time, maybe. After that, the feeds will be shut off quickly.

I could see real-time terrorists being fed a honeytrap version of social media, tailored for them, with certain... inaccuracies for their enjoyment. THAT would be a sensible employment of the NSA's computer power.

So, someone had inside information, but they were sloppy. They thought that placing trades at 2:00 PM was fine, but they didn't account for the delay of light.

Either that, or someone has a working neutrino communication system, so they can go through the Earth, not along its surface.

My bet would be on the former, and I wouldn't be too surprised to see some people go to jail over this.

That's what comes of not having a physicist on your criminal team.

  8. Someone at the DEA needs to be fired on DEA Argues Oregonians Have No Protected Privacy Interest In Prescription Records · · Score: 1

(Actualy, I think that everyone at the DEA needs to be let go, but that is a different political argument.)

This argument is so brain-dead and politically DOA that you have to wonder if something is not being mis-represented. However, if it is as the ACLU (generally a reliable source) relates, whoever is heading the DEA legal team is both dangerous and incompetent, and needs to go.

What, is Gwinnett County behind on their budget ? Is their Police Department in need of some new cruisers ?

I am from Georgia, and no level of cynicism as to why he is doing this is unjustified. It's about the revenue, you can count on it. What
do you want to bet that most / all of the tickets went to people with Fulton County or Cobb County tags ? (The county of residence is right on the license plate
in Georgia; Fulton is Atlanta and Cobb is Marietta; classically these sorts of revenue drives avoid county residents to avoid an electoral backlash.)

Maybe. In the USA, first off, ambulances are not free, and, second, they may not be close. If someone out in the country lives an hour from the nearest ambulance, they might not want to wait and they would certainly dispute the "quicker" part.

Ambulances also have a substantially higher rate of accidents and fatalities than the average driver, so they might dispute the "safer" part as well.

Besides, the way the words "traitor", "treason", "un-American" and "terrorist" are thrown around, their actual meanings are diluted in common speech by all that hyperbole.
