  1. Sinclair QL from 1986 on What's the Oldest Hardware You are Still Using? · · Score: 1

I bought my Sinclair QL in 1986 (rom copyrighted in 1983) and it is still sitting on my computer desk where I use it to do some hobby programming and other QL stuff. Until 1998, it was my main computer system for home use.

  2. Been There, Done That. on IT Training in the Military? · · Score: 1

Since the poster wanted to hear from those that had done IT in the military, I spent 8 years in the Air Force as a Computer-Communications Officer (AFSC of 4925 or the newer 33S3C). I spent a fair bit of my time doing acquisition work (buying computers) and fighting my way around the paperwork involved. I did do a fair bit of plain tech work. In some places a lot of the IT is done by contractors, but there is enough other IT work that most Comm-Computer officers get a chance to play around. Now as far as combat communications go (setting up computers while deployed), that is done all with military folks (a good percentage of enlisted with officers overseeing). I don't know much about that as I never got a chance to deploy anywhere. I do think that IT in the USAF is a dead end job, as very few techies promote beyond Captain. The promotion boards are looking to promote officers that have command experience and most IT guys are the low man on the totem pole. In the mid-90's I knew a bunch of comm-computer captains not make major. When I put my paperwork in to seperate (leave) the service, a number of other captains asked me what form did I use and what the process was. I think they too saw the writing on the wall. I guess my 30+ kidney stones over 15 years is my body's way of telling me to drink more. I just spend 24 hours this last weekend passing another one. I have an appointment to have ultrasound blast the 5mm one still having around. I guess I really do need to dump the soda and do water and juices.

I used to do Tape support for IRIX about 2 years ago. I remember looking at Linux to see learn how Linux handles tape drives and found very little information other than floppy tape drives.

I'd like see some commands like:

    scsicontrol -send scsi commands
scsiha - used to reset and probe scsi bus
    stacker - jukebox control

Plus, I'd like to see more about a Linux tape driver.

This is all assuming that using a P2P means that you are somebody else's copyrighted files. What if you used it to exchange your own copyrighted files? (Copyright does not just apply to the MPAA and RIAA)

Just using P2P is in no way illegal. Using it to exchange material that is copyrighted by somebody else could lead to trouble. The issue is not P2P but the files.

Again, people are complaining about the medium when it's the message that they are really concerned about.

I helped manage 80 Sun hosts in the Pentagon back in the 90's. We named the hosts after the system type, the contractor, the room number (location) and the number of hosts in the room. The system in my office was called se3c767a s - for Sun e - for EDS 3 - for 3rd floor c - for C ring 7 - for 7th corridor 67 - for room 67 a - for the first Sun in that office With 80 systems, just the host name would tell me a log. When they upgraded to Sparcs, they started naming them after music and airplanes, etc. This is fine until 'allegro' goes down and you need to figure out where in the building allegro is. With the old naming system I would know exactly where the system is, and because I know people by room number, I knew who the office point of contact was.

  9. Re:no product for a year? MIPS is dead afterall! on Hope for MIPS, From Toshiba · · Score: 0, Offtopic

I presonally believe you should not accounce a product (or whatever) until it's pretty much ready for release. There is way to much vaporware announced each year. Yes, things take time, but until you're ready, please keep quiet. Announcing a product a year before it's ready is like taking orders before a product is built. Not a good idea.

  10. Re:SGI/IRIX? on Hope for MIPS, From Toshiba · · Score: 1

SGI did look into the Intel chips for the long term. But after the delays with the newer Intel chips and a relook at the Intel vs. Mips issue, they have decided to continue with the Mips line for a while. I know they had some plans to make the Origin 3000 available with Intel chips, but I don't know if this has been done. I think they are better off with the proven track record of the Mips processor and how much they have invested in knowing Mips.
