The problem is that the Gentoo Portage is made specifically for Gentoo and some configurations that out of the box only work on a Gentoo system.
So yes, you can use portage on any distribution, but it will not work as well and you will most likely have problems getting stuff to compile without having to contstantly tweak ebuild files etc.
The YOS Linux distribution uses Portage and though YOS is nice, the portage system rarely works as well as it does on a real Gentoo box.
When I was in high school I thought about building my own telescope and looked into how one grinds a mirror by hand. I can't imagine the patience and skill needed to grind a 16" mirror by hand to the perfect shape...
Absolutely amazing to me...

I used to work for a company that produced ATM like software and many of the systems did in fact need to store at least a days worth of transactions so that a process known as "settling" could be done. Kind of like verifying and cross-checking what the terminal thought it did for the day and what the backend financial institution has in its records.
Keep in mind that developers work on the BSDs for very different reasons then developers who work on Linux. The BSDs are all about advancing software technologies into new arenas, while Linux is all about leverage (which is why you see a very well integrated security subsystem in FreeBSD-5 and OpenBSD and ten different types of filesystems in Linux).
This sounds very arrogant to me. Is he really suggesting that the BSD's innovate while Linux development does not?
Just because an article with NASA budget figures comes from a "Conservative" news source doesn't mean the data is invalid or wrong.
Stereotypes are for the weak minded.
How about a type of service that runs on a webserver that allows a search engine to query for valid links on the server? That way one could configure the "valid link server" to tells search engines what the valid/allowed links are?
Sort of the "next step" over the robots.txt file..
Why do you idiots blame Bush for all the free trade agreements? ALL of it was well entrenched in the system before he was even elected. You SHOULD be blaming Clinton for really getting the ball moving towards outsourcing. Think NAFTA.
I would say that Gentoo is very much Debian like.. and probably even better...
You get the ability to compile everything from scratch if you like or you can install using a set of prebuilt packages.
package manegement uses a 'Portage' system like BSD ports and very similiar to Debian atp get.
I can't believe bonch's post was moderated as Flamebait. Do we have a bunch of liberals who don't like to hear anything negative about Kerry moderating right now?
Btw, just to keep this on-topic a bit, Dean became his own worst enemy when it became apparent that his demeanor is not always under self control. Something MOST people believe is very important that a President have control over.
Wow... internetweekly is a pile of biased "non-facts". I can't believe anybody would read that site for any real political insight. The technology section is good though.
Moderate me offtopic please.
Ummm Yoda, the whole point of learning assembly well is so that a software engineer is well rounded. Sure in todays world many software engineers will never need to know a whole lot about writing close to the hardware. But some of us really *DO* want to be well rounded. Also there is nothing wrong with *cross training* for those who think there is some imaginary boundary between Computer Science and Computer Engineering.
Your PDF on "How the Republicans Stole The Election" is in error.
Let's assume that every one of the 57K people that got removed because they are felons was removed in error.
This still makes no difference. If all those 57K people voted for Gore, Bush STILL would have won.
Now, errors happen and I don't think this was done on purpose. Either way, it didn't affect the outcome of the election.
Oh give it a rest! Saddam was the one that killed his own people. All that oil money and the 12 multimillion dollar mansions and the oppulent life style that he and his followers lived in and yet his people nearly starved *BEFRE* the sanctions!
I used TCSH when I was back in college because it had a few nice features ( I've forgotten them ) but now I use bash ( on Linux ) because I don't really do anything all that special with the shell anyways.
"You want to see "RABID" partisan attacks? Rewind the tape a few years and watch Clinton impeached over a blowjob. Watch the press relentlessly spread lies about Al Gore"
YOU must have been deceived by watching CNN if you really believe the impeachment was about the blowjob.
That is NOT the measure by which correct action is measured. Whether one or 2 billion US soldiers die, the truth and "right thing to do" does not change.
The point of testing an FTP download to the T1 providers POP is to test the LINE, not the other guys lines as you suggested by going to 100 other servers.
What the person is interested in is the bandwidth provided on his "T1".

It would be nice though to have the code released..

Oh and your response is a good example of "narrow one dimensional thinking" as you stereotypes all Republicans to be narrow thinkers.
The C64 was a fine machine! Most of the machines during that era ended up being about the same in terms of power.
And exactly how will the UK government bodies modify software bought from companies such as Microsoft and IBM?
Your point about not being able to modify GPL software is moot when compared to the alternative.
Yeah I bet Linux does have this same bug. Microsofts PPTP service was probably stolen from the Linux source code.

By definition a peer *is* qualified to inspect a colleagues work.
