  1. Support costs? on The iPhone Is a Nightmare For Carriers · · Score: 1

Very little is mentioned about support costs. My experience in North America is that Apple covers it all through Applecare and their retail stores. You may pick it up at an AT&T shop, but Apple has no problem with you coming to them to resolve any issues, and is ultimately a higher quality experience. It sounds like most other phones out there are supported through the carrier which increases their costs for support personnel and warranty replacement logistics. This isn't to say that the carriers do not support the iPhones they sell, but they really don't have to go to the lengths they do for other units.

  2. Re:Apple + Interoperability = Ha ha ha ha ha on ITMS Faces Complaint From Norwegian Ombudsman · · Score: 3, Interesting

Xenolon killed those facts pretty quickly. But the real problem with your post is blaming Apple for the royalties that artists get from their song sales. That is between the record company and the artist, and doesn't involve Apple one bit. I think the big thing that is being ignored so far is the focus has been on iTunes and the iPod. Neither work without a computer. There is complaints that there is no choice. If you want to use iTune Music Store you have to have an iPod to play your purchased music. But, if I wanted to use another service such as Napster I would be forced to use Windows, because Microsoft's Plays For Sure DRM does not work on Macintosh, or Linux. If a government forces a company to open their DRM to multiple MP3 devices, then they also have to open up the OS platform that they will run on. It can't be only one way or the other.

I'm glad the gamma-ray bursts are directed into space.

Not so silly really. I'm sure the lawyers working for Richard Branson at Virgin Galactic spacelines are already creating waivers to sign so the passengers can not sue if they should return to the Earth as the Incredible Hulk.

It seems that any depth that was in the original material was thoroughly cleansed from the movie by Verhoeven. It wasn't the worst movie ever, but personally, it was the biggest personal disappointment. I still have dreams that I might be a part of making a film version of the book that would make Heinlen and fans proud of.

  6. Well timed on Why Does a Screen Re-Draw Make Noises? · · Score: 1

I was playing Splinter Cell on my comp, and when the screen would light up all white I heard a very obvious high pitched sound coming from my speakers. It was annoying to say the least. I've read through a ton of hypothesis, but I really haven't heard from anybody about a solution. One suggestion was for those lead rings around the cables to limit how much interference they bleed. Are there audio devices for removing electrical noise before it reaches the amp? Or will the sound get to speakers no matter what? (My speakers stopped making the sound when they were unplugged from the computer, so I'm sure it requires a direct connection for the noise to be carried). Also, the screen I'm typing on is almost all white and I don't get that noise, yet a heavy 3D oriented game like Splinter Cell makes my system shreak like a banshee.

What!? Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the best of all the Star Trek Movies. I'm sorry if it didn't have as many explosions as #2.

On Topic: If all Americans (or even citizens of the planet) eventually benefit from NASA's work, then why should only SF fans be billed extra for it?

  8. Re:So, to sum it up vs. the iPod.... on Nomad Jukebox 3 Officially Out · · Score: 1

You forgot one very important thing: It says as a data storage medium you need Creative's software to move files. If the computer you are moving files to doesn't have the software you have to bring a floppy with drivers and the program for the other computer to recognize and use the device. There already are a significant number of computers (notbooks mainly) that don't even have floppy drives. What is going to happen then? I'm still going to wait until Apple makes PC software for the iPod (or until Apple ports OS X to x86)

  9. Re:Nothing New from Gateway! on iMac LCD Impostors · · Score: 1

Sorry but Eurocom makes Gateway look well built. And IBM made their X series about 2 years ago or more, with their current models trimmer and some sporting 17" screens. separately: Yes the display on the iMac does wobble a bit after extreme use. Keep in mind those displays are getting tugged around more than a puppie leashed to a four year old. The demo iMacs are probably seeing more than 100 times as much movement for the screen than the end users' systems will.
