  1. Anthropomorphic Prinicple suggests that ... on The LHC, Black Holes, and the Law · · Score: 1

the absence of detectable advanced civilizations may result from the inevitable destruction by black holes of such civilizations once they acquire the capacity to build an LHC-like device. Hence, the LHC will destroy the earth.

  2. Re:Obama lost me as a supporter - here's my letter on Senate Passes Telecom Immunity Bill · · Score: 2, Insightful

Obama's yes vote on FISA is completely unnecessary from an electoral calculus. My sense is that the story line that the Democrats "cave in" because of fearing voters will see them as soft on terror is a smoke screen. Democrats are winning seats in Mississippi! None of these jerks needed to vote for this to be more than competitive in their next election. They all know this, but they feel somehow compelled to "compromise". Curious, isn't it? Compromise, when you don't need to and don't have to. I don't buy it. I think the Democratic leadership, and Bush Democrats ("Blue Dogs") were party to, or had prior knowledge of, the illegal surveillance programs. So this vote is to cover their own asses. Nothing else makes sense.

  3. lame academic question on Review of Amazon's DRM-Less Music Download Store · · Score: 1

No, that is not "the question". It is "a" question, and a relatively lame and academic question. If music is about pleasure, then a more useful question is: what does a given listener enjoy listening to? This will vary from listener to listener. I find well-recorded CD and vinyl to be very enjoyable. MP3 for me is less enjoyable. That's what matters to me as a listener. Now, if you get your jollies from participating in blind listening experiments, please enjoy!

  4. Re:Three and a half hours is a long time on Air Force Mistakenly Transports Live Nukes Across America · · Score: 0, Troll

Strikes me that the "mistake" is a cover for a deliberate movement of the missles, that was either accidentally or intentionally leaked. Most likely: message to Iran that nuclear weapons are being actively positioned. I put NOTHING past this dysadministration.

  5. Re:Analogue vs Digital on Return of the Vinyl Album · · Score: 1

"Generational loss means that if you want to do anything more than slap a live recording onto a LP with no post-production whatsover, the quality will suck. Nobody masters albums in analogue these days." Not true x 2. High speed analog tape mastering is still done, mostly in audiophile recording, because it has such awesome fidelity. Better than vinyl, and better than any A-D followed by D-A conversion chain in existence outside of the NSA. Tape is a pain in the ass to work with, which is why it is no longer a consumer medium, and used rarely by pros. The other arguments given for the benefits of CD over vinyl each have some merit. CD at its best can be quite good sounding. And CD is very convenient. But good well cleaned vinyl on a well aligned and maintained vinyl rig remains the best recorded sound that I am privileged to hear. It is in another league of vibe.

  6. Re:I call BS on Comcast Lying About Vonage · · Score: 1

that would be "moot" point, rather than "mute" point, yes? I use Vonage over Comcast in Boulder, CO. The service is crystal clear and reliable. Just my experience.

  7. Re:I call troll on Firefox Community, Sickly Out of Control · · Score: 1

Isn't McDonalds referring to the number of burgers served, rather than the number of people served? Presumably, they have accurate statistics on this.

  8. Re:Perhaps Comcast is just inadequate? on Comcast Accused of Blocking VoIP · · Score: 1

I have Comcast and Vonage, in Boulder, CO. Comcast has been completely reliable and gives great download speeds and decent upload. I have had one outage in 3 years, and got prompt helpful customer service. Vonage over Comcast has worked beautifully for me. I'd say 97% of calls are PSTN quality. About every 2-3 months, I need to reboot the Vonage box b/o poor call quality. This fixes the problem every time. Just my experience.

  9. Re:Biometrics on MS Employee Calls for No More Passwords · · Score: 1

Most healthy people can reliably briefly memorize up to 7 decimal digits. That is why telephone numbers used to be 7 decimal digits( and in many places, they still are). 10 digit numbers came about when number demand in large metropolitan areas exceeded the 7 digit dialing space. Most people don't memorize 10 digits reliably.
