As the article states, the Associated press recieved confirmations that it was true from two of Microsoft's public relations agencies.
It is believable that maybe some engineers or lower management will plant a false story as a joke, but the public relation firms deal with top management only... there is no way they would have confirmed that unless they had microsoft corp's ok.
It is much more likely that after realizing the whole thing just got turned into a bad joke in the media, Microsoft decided to pretend they never had anything to do with the whole project.
the phillosophical theme of the matrix was as subtle as a punch in the face.
And lets face it, if you liked the phillosophical theme you would have preferred Dark City, the matrix predecessor that had a very similar plot (without the action and the kung foo).
And here is another proof that Slashdot makes money by selling bulk mod points to microsoft PR staff. These PR ppl then write some post that vaguely looks like it was made from a linux user, saying "i hate Microsoft as much as the next guy but you have to admit that.... (sucking sounds)". Once it is written the post is immediately moderated up to +5 insightful.
Yes they do have "a direction and purpose", their direction and purpose is to take complete control of as much as the computer industry as possible.
I am glad you are happy for that. After all believing in your product is a key to enjoying a career in public relations.
I hope they do make a "Maclike" pc, which just as the Macs will be overpriced, undersupported by the software industry, and not overly popular.
The PCs are very popular because of their open architecture and any attempt to close it has failed. I guess the most noteworthy failure is that of IBM.
Well let me qualify that -- the Macs are not really a failure, or to put it better, they are an ever decreasing failure that will soon turn into a success, as the Macs are progressively turned into really good looking PCs.
But then again Microsoft and HP do not have what Apple has -- the millions of fanatical fans willing to buy anything they put out. These fans have allowed Apple to survive and to eventually learn from their mistakes. Now they have learned from their mistakes and are slowly but surely embracing PC architecture.
If your cellphone's vibration and ring sound are turned into energy then its vibrations and ring sound will naturally decrease and thus defeat their initial purpose.
If you want lower vibration and sound you can set the cellphone so it vibrates less, and it will save much more power than any other energy recapture-battery recharging scheme.
There is no free lunch. Especially in thermodynamics.
The parent post should be moderated at -1 flamebait.
The story never said that this is a ruling. They never even suggested it was a ruling. Thus the parent has absolutely no right to correct the submitter at all (and least of all in such a rude manner) . Even if the article was wrong the parent would still have no right to be so rude.
btw it is really nice that you know what amicus is and all but that does not give you right to be rude. You are not the only one that went to law school, and I know for a fact that many ppl here went to much better schools than VU. yet you are the only one being an a-hole.
I dont know why this one did not succeeed. It is a great movie and it has famous stars in it.
I think it was because it made people uncomfartable. It starred robert deniro as a scared cop and bill murray as a self-obssessed gangster. People were probably shocked by deniro not playing the gangster.
But both deniro and bill murray were great. And so was uma. Oh well. Make sure to see it if you can.
oops maybe my math is wrong... it seems it was before reagan... anyways too late for me to think... and i am willing to bet $100 that there will be problems releasing the reagan papers as well.
This administration has been really secretive with documents that should be released to the public. Remember couple of years ago Bush jr passed some executive orders preventing some of the papers of his fathers administration from being released.
Even looking at the way the present administration holds press briefings it is obvious that they want to completely limit and control information flow.
And yes 25 years is long enough. Remember if you go 25 years back you get smack in the middle of Reagan's time. Reagan is in the process of being turned into a living saint by the republicans, and it would be really inconvenient to provide some details about all the nasty things that happened during his presidency. Not to mention that some of these nasty things happened in Iraq, and would be really embarassing given the current reasoning for the war effort.
On top of everything, most of the powerful people of the bush administartion (such as Cheney, Powel and Rumsfield for example) were important people in the reagan administration. This decision shows that they are not quite eager to be judged for their actions back then. That is completely understandable. Powel, for example was implicated in transfering shitloads of anti air missiles to a certain "axis of evil" country.
So it is not surprising at all. But if we are to function as a democracy, these papers should be revealed. Politicians should be accountable for their actions, they should not be able to delay the release of truth indefinately. And who knows the papers may make the Reagan administration look good. Maybe there was a good reason for iran contra, and all the killing in south america. Dont know what that would be but it is possible, I suppose.
"largely been ignored at least by the anti-war side. "
And how do you figure that? There are many antiwar demonstartors and journalists in Iraq right now living among the Iraqis, and in the best position to actually know how the Iraqis feel about this war.
I have read articles by many of them, and none of them indicate that the Iraqis like the war. They describe Iraqis in fear of their lives and not as people that are excited to be liberated.
So for untold tens of billions of dollars we have gotten couple of dozen of countries to voice support of the war, without sending troops or helping in any other way. In the meantime the populations of every one of these countries are very strongly against the war.
I hope this list makes you feel good, for me it is just evidence of a waste of tax money.
Iraq does not produce much oil, because of the UN embargo. But it does have one of the largest proven oil reserves in the world. (it is either the largest or second largest after saudi arabia)
Oh and Dennis Miller is an spineless loser who thinks that by sucking up to the current administration he can resurrect his sad career. His sucking up has earned him access on TV but he still cant get people to like him. The "sue their school district" joke is such an old cliche.
Because Kosovo was done by Clinton, who is a sly politician, and can really make himself look like the saviour.
Iraq 2 is performed by Bush 2 who is so happless he completely exposed the ugliness of these wars.
Remember what happened in Ksovo in the end? After all the talk about Democracy, Kosovo was taken over by a fascist government, most of the non-albanians had to flee (including all minorities) to Serbia for their lives, and then the Kosovo liberation army decided they were not done liberating and attacked macedonia.
And of course something similar will happen in Iraq.
Depleted uranium is actually radioactive. The word depleted is used to designate the fact that it is not radioactive enough to be used as nuclear reactor fuel, but nevertheless it is plenty radioactive.
Depleted uranium is treated as a radioactive substance in the US.
Of course the effect of depleted uranium has not been studied, but it is very logical to assume that breathing in radioactive subtsances will cause cancer. Also there are very high cancer rates in places where a lot of DU was used in the last war (such as Basra).
There was a good article in the New Scientist about all of that recently, so if you do not trust me feel free to check it out.
So please stop saying it is not radioactive, you may be spreading FUD yourself.
Good then, the propaganda works. Of course i am not saying all the above things about saddam are not true they obviously are, but the PBS documentary did not show all the suffering that the first gulf war and the years of sanctions have caused. Also they did not note that #6 happened essentially with Bush senior's ok.
Neither did they show any real indication that the iraqis actually want the americans to invade them. I have read several independant correspondants who lived in iraq and it seems the answer is definately no.
Remember in the height of the anti clinton mania every right winger thought they were really clever when they spelled it Klinton. I never figured that one out either.
Please do not judge americans by the above poster. You cannot be offended by that post because he gave you a fair warning -- he quoted the free republic.
In america, when someone quotes the free republic you stop paying attention to them, and slowly back away from them.

You may as well admit it -- you liked the action.
MUD= Multy User Dungeon (it was Dimension in the story)...

It is not bad but I dont like it for one reason. It is the movie where ethan hawke stole my Uma. What is so great about ethan hawke anyways.
I agree it is great... very funny and twisted. DO NOT bring a date.
hehe i concur.
As my mom used to say, life sucks and then you die. Anyways it sounds better in the original croatian.
It was a great movie.
cant wait till the RIAA starts making the argument "it is completely unacceptable that mexican authors have more protection than american authors".
They made the same argument about europe when they put in the latest copyright extention act.
Great movie nut i dont think it is really forgotten. It is one of Roger Ebert's great movies. That is how i first learned about it.

You confuse the US with Bush and his cronies. Believe me after this war is over we (the US) will be paying for Iraqi oil.
But who will own it, now that is the trillion dollar question.
Remember in the height of the anti clinton mania every right winger thought they were really clever when they spelled it Klinton. I never figured that one out either.
