  1. Good for Aussies! on Google Opens Sydney Office, Internship Program · · Score: 4, Insightful

So now Australian students can also enjoy the benefits of internships at Google. On the other hand, if you try hard enough, you can find an internship position in e.g. Mountain View even if you're not American. So all of you people that would like to try working for Google and don't have a Googleplex around, just give it a chance. Another thing - now only one continent is Google-free. That's Africa. I wonder if any of the major software companies will eventually try to establish an R&D office over there.

  2. Octet, not byte on First Quantum Byte Created · · Score: 1

To be exact, byte is just a unit of computing, and it can contain arbitrary number of bits. While 8-bit byte, also known as octet, is by far the most popular, reaching the boundary of 8 bits doesn't change anything except for a small scaling factor. All the computations that can be performed on 8-bit bytes can be just as well performed on 6-bit, 9-bit or whatever-you-choose-bit bytes.

Not fully true. Serious developers simply know, that they will most probably have to port the system to the new tools. The sooner they learn the features/problems of the new systems, the better for them. So you can be sure that there were lots of beta testers that had a strong motivation, and most of them quite happy with the feedback I guess. As for getting free copies - let's take e.g. Blizzard. People didn't get a free copy although they spent hours on playing WoW in the beta program. And nobody complained. Oh, and btw - these MS products are free, unless you plan to make money on them. Fair enough imho. Disclaimer: I don't want to sound too pro-MS, but I just got tired of people often attacking MS just for the sake of it.

  4. Not only SQL Server 2005 on MSSQL 2005 Finally Released · · Score: 0, Troll

It's a huge day for MS today - it's not only SQL Server 2005 but also Visual Studio 2005 and BizTalk 2006. They are releasing it as a full development platform, not just a SQL server. And it's just the beginning of products that MS is going to release within next year or so: new xbox, office, windows, just name it. Not to mention upcoming 'live' services. So it will be an interesting year.

I just wanted to mention couple of things that might have influenced the recent results of polish programmers. Firstly, quite a few years ago a few people started to train promising young programmers in the art of algorithm design. Note, that they start very early, often in the primary school. These boys (usually) are trained by the best polish lecturers and older colleagues. Later, they often represent Poland in the international contests, with quite some achievements. But it's not only this group. Few years ago Warsaw University started a national programming contest in cooperation with the biggest polish newspaper. The contest takes about a week, and each day new tasks are given. It always starts with fairly easy ones, only later to go into really hard problems. This attracts many young people, that know how to implement e.g. simple sorting but don't really know much about e.g. graph algorithms. Competition in these contests gives these young people opportunity to extend their knowledge, and since it is a recurring event, they learn in the meantime and get better and better. Also, people from countries like Russia and Poland for a long time didn't have access to the modern technology, so instead of playing with machines, they played with theory. And in algorithms, the real problems lie in the design, not in the implementation. Finally, we're smart :)

There are few important differences between google-like search and data analysis (like OLAP): * in google data is not structured, while gov's data is probably high-dimensional * the above is related to types of queries, while in google we have equal-text searches, in OLAP we usually query over many attributes with various, often complex, predicates * in google we are interested in very limited number of hits, while for data analysis we almost always process zillions of tuples. In other words, ask yourself, if google is able to count avarage salary of all plumbers from Washington that went to Florida last year in May and spent there money both for alcohol and renting surfing boards :) I'm not saying it's impossible for google people, yet it seems their facilities don't support such functionality.

  9. Underappreciated? on What's Your Favorite Underappreciated Movie? · · Score: 1

The problem is how do you define "underappreciated". There are zillions of movies that were made out of the main stream, and became very successful in some communities ("Donnie Darko" as an example). There are main stream ones, that were good, yet not understood ("Hudson Hawk", probably "Solaris"). So it all depends on what is expected from the movie. But my vote goes to "Shaolin Soccer" ofcourse :)
