Actually if you go to the windowsupdate you can "customize" the page and exclude any updates you want from the list of available ones. If you've already installed it, then it won't show up.

  3. IRC works well on Network Chat as a Tool for Corporate Communications? · · Score: 1
We mainly use it during emergencies. We setup an IRC server and when we have an emergency (server down, etc) we log on. We are even trying out a java IRC client so that people don't have to install an IRC client or buy one.

We don't really use it all the time, but it's functional and we can keep logs for future reference.

  4. We use Corda on Drawing Graphs on Your Browser? · · Score: 5, Informative
Most of these posts suggested image formats... I have a suggestion for an application if you want charts.

Corda might do what you need. It will output the images in Flash, JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG and others. I believe it uses XML files to generate the graphs. I'm sure I'm missing a lot of the other things that it can do, but it's worth taking a look. Oh, and unfortunately it's not free, but it might be worth it if it does what you need.

Note: I do not work for this company. I have seen the results of using their product. We use it where I work and everyone seems to like what it can do.

  5. Linksys WAP11 Version 1 - upgraded firmware on Wireless Access Point Reliability? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Believe it or not, I've had this one since they came out (2 years ago or so) and have had to reset it twice. It's pretty reliable and the transfer rates are decent. I have it plugged into it's own interface on my firewall using a crossover cable so I can section if off from my internal net and log^H^H^H protect my network.

I have heard horror stories about them but I must admit I am a very happy customer. Their PCCards suck though.

  6. Grab an open source project and hack away! on Ideas for High School Computer Club Activities? · · Score: 2, Interesting
What are you guys interested in?

Games? Why not download the source to Quake2 and play with the code? The other fun part comes in compiling and playing your version. Making mods for it is was also suggested, why not have two groups? One in charge of the game and the other of the mod?

Programming? If you're not interested in programming games, then look through the source of another program that might be of interest.

Now if programming isn't what you're looking for... then maybe helping your school migrate to OpenOffice? Get rid of the Office lincense will reduce the cost to the school, so it might be worth it. Then plan 2 would be to migrate them to Linux! With both these projects it will require you to provide some training and support. (Both good resume keywords for when you eventually reach the job market.) Maybe take a look at the LTSP and see if you're be interested in that.

There are SOOO many things to do, it's just a matter of finding something that you and the rest of the CC is interested in. It looked like you'd already worked on a few good ones.

    Good luck!

  7. Re:Roomba self charger add-on on Electrolux Robot Vacuum Cleaner · · Score: 1
It's definitely worth it! We run it every day in one or two different rooms around our house. I do recommend you get the fast charger, a 2nd battery and probably another Virtual Wall unit. (It's the one that you put to block it from going into another location.) That might depend on your house/apartment though. I have a lot of open spaces that need to be separated and I can't block them with only one adapter.

One thing you have to realize is that it's really just a "surface" cleaning. So maybe once every few months (or whenever you think it's necessary) you'd run your normal vaccuum to do a deeper clean.

Something I've noticed though it's that it makes us clean up more often so that there isn't anything on the floor. Makes our whole house look cleaner!

  13. Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 on Cable Companies Despise PVRs · · Score: 1
Time Warner in Austin uses the SA 8000. It's a combination DVR (PVR whatever you want to call it.) and digital cable box. It works ok. They charge 9.95 or so per month.

It has a HD for about 40 hours of video. The quality is quite good, but then I expect it just grabs the stream and save it to the HD since it doesn't have to decode the video and then re-encode it onto the HD.

It can record two shows at the same time but your box has to be tuned to the 2nd show. It has instant replay, you can program in the times/dates to record and yes, you can fast forward through commercials. You can't press a button and "magically" skip them, but at least they're not blocking that feature... yet.

As for programming, you just use what they provide with the onscreen channel guide. I've noticed that it has a little trouble selecting some items for recording unless that show is on. For example, you select "Friends" a day before and it just shows you it want's to record from 3:27-4:27 (the time when you select Friends) as opposed to the correct time. We'll see if they fix this later.

It also has PIP functionality without the need for a 2nd tuner or cable box. It has 2 firewire and 1 or 2 USB ports. No ethernet though as with the Explorer 1000.
