At one of my previous employers, an online/telephone based travel agency, we were allowed to suggest that customers might want to check with airlines we didn't have the ability to sell (notably Southwest and JetBlue) when they weren't liking what we had to offer. The idea I believe was we'd essentially already lost the sale but by providing the information they would need to get what they wanted, it would leave a positive impression and hopefully they'd come back to us next time, or at least maybe we'd still be able to get the car or hotel booking.

The same company told us in training, "the customer is not always right, but the customer is always the customer", and I think that goes along with what kfg was saying earlier in this thread.

Definitely valid problems, and why the analogy mostly works. In the case of Word, there actually is one advantage: You can make your own documents (nails) with Word 97 (the old hammer) as long as you want; the problem comes in when you try to use documents from other people (new nails). Most people can't make their own nails.

Well, you wouldn't have to buy a new hammer, just like you can keep using Word 97 if you want. It would be more like, if after a few years, they came out with new nails and you had to buy the new hammer to use the new nails. As long as you only need to use the old nails you're fine with the old hammer.

Not that it would matter, our Xen image is based on FC5 so it won't run on FC6 anyway:

    A. This usually indicates that the kernel image you are trying to boot is incompatible with the hypervisor. This will be seen if trying to run a FC5 (non-PAE) kernel on FC6 (which is PAE only), or if trying to run a bare metal kernel.

Some Google searches turned up suggestions that there's a conflict with the video card on these things. Hopefully, if Lenovo ever releases a BIOS update to allow enabling VT, they'll also fix that problem.

I'm not sure about Blackberry or Treo having not used them, but I used to have a Sidekick and while it was a nifty data device, it made a rather lousy phone. If you used a headset it was ok, but otherwise holding it up to your ear was awkward. Too short and fat. To get an idea of what it was like, try holding a bar of soap to your ear. Lever 2000 would be about the right shape and size. Plus the battery was pretty weak, only about two days of standby time.

I'm concerned about the iPhone's form factor as well. It looks like it may be a bit big for a lot of people to carry around, especially those that have gotten used to the little RAZRs and such. When I gave up on the Sidekick, I got a little Samsung flip phone. I'm not sure I'd want to go back to carrying around a big phone again, I'll have to wait to see when it comes out and what Cingular's data rates are. I'd almost be more interested in a wifi-only version, and one friend of mine who wants to be able to make Skype calls with it.

I do think the iPhone will be a success. It certainly answers the wishes of at least three groups:

If all you needed was an incoming fax number, why didn't you just sign up for an eFax Free account? I've had one for years and haven't had any problems. It's not a local number, but then neither is my cell phone. It doesn't get used very much, so the 20 pages/month limit for free accounts (is that new? Hadn't noticed that before) isn't a problem.
