    You are in college to LEARN, and that's what the college provides free internet for. Not other un-necessary crap.

    Who are you to decide? Learning is more than going to class - screwing around on the internet, bedding freshmen, learning just how much you can drink are all valuable things.

    I dunno - a steam engine is a step in the development of IC engines (and gas turbines). I wouldn't call it a toy because of that. BF is a toy language, as is intercal. Smalltalk is a predecessor of a lot of modern languages, which is a bit different.

    It will deter the "honest" sex offenders from using social networking sites thereby keeping them away from at least one source of temptation. The "dishonest" sex offenders will be more likely to be taken off the street if they're caught.

    Yeah, how dare they socialize with others - it's as though they think they're people.

    The problem with sex offenders is that no matter what kind of rehab/psych treatments the offender gets, they do not change their sexual preferences. As a father, I'm torn. I'd like nothing better for the skinners of the world to be locked up forever or put in general population and let the other convicts take care of the problem to protect children like mine.

    If your kids are being diddled, chances are it's someone you know - the stereotypical pedo in a van is exceedingly rare, and your kids aren't that sexy.

    That said, this is a SO registry, not a pedo registry, so I don't see what help it is barring someone who mooned the wrong guy from myspace is going to do.

    So what? The point is that more hardware configs = more work, and things like screen resolution and sprites have deeper implications than just scaling your graphical widgets.

    There is no justification for the average American earning 10X what another person doing an equivalanet job earns.

    Yes there is: that's what it takes to attract that person in a particular market. It's the government's job to be somewhat protective of their citizens and not license the importation of cheap labor. It's not like there's a shortage of IT workers.

    I thought SL1.0 was about getting the name out - you can say 'we were here in 2007' or some such. Anyway, I'm in the position of not liking either option - I use linux and FF and I really hate having to deal with flash or broken webapps that only work with IE (I work at a MS shop now, so that should be expected...) - I just want decent html apps that work with most stuff.

    That's not a valid objection, as you have to download flash too, or have you not noticed everyone going to flash 9 for no particular reason?

    last I looked, it was down to 80%. Anyway, that sort attitude leads to your site being IE6 only, as you just throw any old thing in without any thought to portability.

    I'll show you black culture just fine - look for parents that don't raise their kids or value education. Look for people in high school that beat down the kids who do well on a test because achievement is acting white. The product of a culture that does that is destined for crime and dead end jobs. Not that it always follows racial lines, but it happens a lot with groups who define themselves as 'us vs. whitey'. Meanwhile, Africans show up from places in africa, work like dogs and send their kids to college. It's culture, not race.
