Now I hate spam as much as anyone but look at it like the crap I find in my mailbox everyday. It's just one of those things that you learn to deal with (As Taco mentioned...) with filtering.
That said...think about this (I'm not being paraniod, just throwing this out, wondering what others think) if this law gets passed and they start going after the smart spammers who do what they can to hide thier identity. How are they going to go after these people? More than likely with the same controversial tacticts that have been discussed here before. This may not be thier intention, but when the people whose job it is to stop this get going, they are going to want thier job to be as easy as possible. Will this include "Wire Tapping" suspected spammers email?
We have all seen lists of what Carnivore will/is supposedly looking for, i.e. bomb, gun, anarchy, etc...why not add "work from home", "be your own boss" and others to the list?
Will there be a commision that defines what is spam and what is not? What if companies started putting in the fine print something like "...by agreeing to this you also agree to alow COMPANY_X to send you email with store information" or something along those lines. That was a lame example, but I am sure some sleazy lawyer could figure out a way to fool people into aggreeing to accept spam.
I would love to see less spam, but stop for a second and think about 5 years down the road after this bill is enacted.
Lets say Adobe (being probably one of the most pirated companies out there) decided to write a trojan that spread though a P2P network and once on a users system searched for pirated Adobe software. Then, once They had the info, they could look then better target thier anti-piracy efforts.
Before someone says that once it was known that Adobe was doing that...blah blah, bad PR blah blah...say it was a "black" project and done in a closed non-adobe environment. How would you tell?
I think that the quality in W2K is also due to Linux. Look at all of the MS products where there is competition: Exchange and SQL. MS saw that there were many other options for thier customers in these markets (Novell, Oracle, MySQL etc) and knew that they had to make these products right. In the OS world (until recently) they were the only *percieved* game in town so could pretty much do what they wanted.
I have always felt that when MS decides it wants to get into a certain market, they first quickly release something that usually sucks to get their name out. v2 is usually about on par with the competition and by v3 and beyond they begin winning the race. There are many examples of this. How many people here remember when Word and Excell were jokes and if you wanted to get something done, you used Word Perfect and Quattro Pro (or 123).
Just as I kick one habit (Diablo2, baulders Gate) here they go getting me all stoked for a new game!
Will D&D forever curse me? In the 70's it got my ass kicked, in the 80's prevented me from getting a girlfriend and in the 90's has caused me to stare at computer screens for endless hours!
Do you think that Schools do this in practice, or is this just a CYA (cover your ass) scenario in case a student does something stupid/illegal. It seems to me in this lawsuit-happy world full of sleazy lawyers that this could be the only way that Schools (or anyone) can avoid being sued into bankruptcy.
In a nutshell, Do the schools implement these policies on thier own accord, or are they usualy done at the request of thier insurer?
Wasnt there a discussion here before that mentioned that one reason Apache's stats were so much higher was that whenever anyone installed a *NIX, usually Apache is installed by default and then counted by netcraft?
Or does Taco really seem more bitter/snobby than normal lately? It's apparently going to be a video release (well, DVD for me)
Gee Taco, Got l33t?
And I think we all remember his snide comments a few weeks ago when he incredulously asked if any of "us" (whoever "we" are) actually go to the microsoft website.
Hey Taco, if you need any help climbing off that high horse, gimme a shout!
I was argueing with my boss this morning about Vollyball. When I play with him, he is all about positions, the set shot etc. I was telling him that a fun day of vollyball for myself is with a beer in one hand, sun shining, tahoe nice and cold and the only reason to keep score is so everyone gets a bathroom break at the same time.
He fails to take into account the passion that Linux supporters have for their OS. Regardless of it's current failings, they will use it, fix it and make it work.
I am looking through the site and not seeing anything about this so I will ask here.
Are you going to be automating any of the exploration process? Specificly the surveys. I think that after what you have already accomplished, automating an IP, Gradiant, Mag etc survey wouldnt be to difficult.
While this whole situation does suck, wouldn't this be a case where since he didn't file a patent on these underlying search technologies, anyone else could do so? If they have already been granted the patent, isn't that the end of it?
Possibly what he means by frightening is the fact that if this in fact turns out to be a Planet that is 17x the size of Jupiter, everything he currently believes about planetary makeup could be wrong. If our Solar System is in fact a freakish occurance in the Universe, he may very well have to rethink many things that he has taken as fact for years.
If that didn't make sense sorry...just woke up and need coffee!!
When I was little, I remember saving my allowance and dragging my parents down to the store as soon as it opened (target I think) to buy Pac-Man the day it came out for the Atari.
hey there ya AC Date rapist...That article was about them *begining* the switchover. The switchover completed about a month ago. Go to K-Mart and get a clue.
It appears that Hotmail was switched over to Win2k/IIS5 about 2 weeks ago according to netcraft.
www.hotmail.com is running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000
About 1/2 way through season 4 FOX switched to a new annimation house which gave it the ppearance of change. Lets also not for get that Season 3 was the last one for Conan O'brian who was a writer. Both of those events changed the look and feel of the simpsons.
What many people dont seem to realize is that the simpsons is a constantly evolving show. MG is always trying new things...sometimes they work, sometimes they dont. The simpsons have always rocked, the reasons seem to change every couple of years, and right after the change MG and crew are ripped on. Of course looking back, those change seasons seem to be the most popular.

Hrmm...I looked 21 to buy the beer...but I didn't look 18 to buy the smokes?

If you had read even the first line of the article:
"The activist organization Some People apparently put the monolith in Magnuson Park on New Year's Eve"
or the 3rd & 4th paragraphs:
"Members of Some People marched in the streets on New Year's Eve, and hoped their monolith would make its mark.
"We were trying to help the human race evolve, and some other humans steal it," said member Caleb Williams."
You will see that it is a local seattle group that did it. I can't find a web page for them. If anyone knows of one, please let me know!

Thank you. I am glad someone else out there also considers NOFX etc to be bubble-gum BS.

They switched over about a month ago. This was discussed (Never as a submission although I am sure it was submitted) in a -1 Offtopic kinda way ;)
Er...VooDoo Extreme is a review site. Has nothing to do with The VooDoo vid cards.
Strange that this is Marked Funny...unless you mean its funny how paranoid this guy is, that would fit.
:)
I would ask the CEO and shareholders of Yahoo how meaningless those attacks were. Not everyone forgets to take thier meds
