    oh come on. puh lease don't compare charity to the poor and the sick to a bunch of ego-driven hackers who want to reinvent the wheel just so that they don't have to pay for Photoshop or whatever. You also can't deny the fact that even Mr. Evil Bill Gates himself gives more money to real charities than all of the FSF members combined. Technology is something else-I think MS is stifling it. But they are helping people who are worse off than you and me. People who are too sick to get out of bed-let alone use the internet

  7. Can't they be labeled correctly? on CNN on "hackers" · · Score: 1

    - People who broke into other computers were sometimes called hackers, but they did it using pure wits and skill. Hardly ever did they damage a system, they just wanted free computer time, or to be able to connect to another computer without paying for a LD call. Few 'hackers' broke into machines or networks, but those that did were almost always just having fun. True, I don't want anyone to have fun on my machine, but they were at most trespassers.. annoyances. - It's still illegal and an invasion of privacy. Let them burn-I don't care. Would you tolerate it if someone looked into your emails or browser cache to see what you were up to?

  8. hacking == cracking on CNN on "hackers" · · Score: 1

    I always thought the difference between hackers and crackers is that a cracker does physical damage to the system while a hacker tries to gain illegal/inappropriate access to the system. Privacy is a big thing for me-I'd be pissed if someone erased my hard drive but I'd also be pretty upset if someone read my emails or followed my web surfing Now people who try to port linux to my commodore 64 are not hackers. They are nerds. :)

  11. He pretty much got it straight on Mozilla at One: An article by Frank Hecker · · Score: 1

    - Like it or lump it, Mozilla's biggest problem is that their competition actually has out right now something that may be superior to most of what they are still building. Like it or lump it, IE is pretty slick. - You'd have a point if you mentioned Opera instead of IE as mozilla's competition. Opera has the best CSS compliance so far and is pretty small to boot. Personally I don't see how IE5 or Opera can compete with mozilla once it ships. I'm willing to be patient

  16. All software should be free ... hmm ?! on Bochs Author Launches VMware Clone Project · · Score: 1

    I don't think all software should be free-I think all software should be better and if the open software is better than your commercial stuff then too bad for you. But if the commercial stuff is better then most people will buy your stuff but the free alternative will survive. It won't dominate but it won't be "put out of business". That's an important advantage over superior non-free stuff but I don't think it's an unfair advantage. It's certainly better than people pirating the commercial stuff

    ok so jwz left. That's terrible because he was one of the project's biggest supporters. But why does everyone think the whole world is falling apart when mozilla is doing so well? The gtk group is mostly non-mozilla and is quite successful (oh yeah jwz was very pro-motif). The java mozilla is still alive and kicking even though jwz predicted they would give up due to failure. Doczilla is a commercial SGML/Hytime browser based on mozilla code and they have just released a tutorial on working with mozilla code. Be Inc has hired a full time engineer to work on bezilla (their site has some interesting screenshots). There's even an amiga mozilla port underway...no actually there are two! And let's not forget all the bug reports submitted by people from all over. So don't tell ME that nobody is interested in working with the mozilla code when there are people working really deep into the code-not just cutesy changes but you can now have fun with XUL anyway...
