the most important thing about the k7 is that it's the first chip that will compete against the xeon. That's where all the price markup is and the K7 will bring it down- and intel will be hurt by it.
oh wouldn't that be terrible! Small developers actually making money! We can't tolerate this-we must only support the large companies like IBM and Intel who are supporting linux right? sheesh
If you don't care if linux doesn't have a unifying desktop, I can understand that POV. But to say gnome was established to set a standard desktop is crazy. Say what it is-it's an alternative to kde which came first, more stable and on more linux distros. Gnome causes division which makes things more confusing to the new user. Now if you feel that linux is all about lots of choices and that it's not intended for people who are computer illiterate, then gnome is a great thing. oh btw, does anyone want AOL on gnome/linux?
You have a good point because Apple has a record of doing one thing one day and changing their mind a few months later. They sold the Newton, they bought it back and killed it. They talked chrp and dropped it. They promised Copland and the mac still doesn't have an OS that does pre-emptive multitasking (finally macOSX based on unix hehe)
you don't want to give back to the mac community. you're just an opportunist. Having one macos isn't just good for Apple but also mac developers and consumers.
This may make a great alternative to NT. Now what will they say? Here's an easy to use, high performance server that's open source-but not hackerish, supported by a famous brand name. It has a great dev environment. 2 catches: no SMP (please correct me if I'm wrong) and only for macs. Linux can challenge NT on many fronts but this seems to attack the other fronts.
bah. libertarianism and socialism is for the kiddies who come out of college thinking they know everything. I ignore the politics and ask "what do you really have to offer?" Linux isn't about politics-it's about technology. If Windows beat the stuffing out of linux, I don't think anyone would pay much attention to it. The point is, linux does beat the stuffing out of windows and all this other stuff is just a mere diversion.
people paid alot of $$$ on their mac clones. open source means nothing to these consumers-it's peanuts. Open hardware is much more important than open source.
BeOS does work with non-Apple G3 (ppc 750 to be exact) upgrade cards. Apple doesn't want BeOS. There's a big difference between not helping and hurting ok? There are no non-Apple G3 computers because Apple killed the clones.
look if Apple doesn't want to work with BeOS then you don't play games with them ya hear? We're not just talking about 'no help'-this is active discouragement. They don't want BeOS on macs...at least not yet btw, look at intel's investments in Redhat, VA Research and Cygnus and wonder why nobody sells linux workstations? Wonder why gcc is optimized more for x86 than ppc? Wonder why Redhat is getting all the attention?
hmm it almost sounds like a win-win for Apple and its Mac users. MacOS server doesn't get split up, Apple can still get money for their investment in technology, bugs are fixed and features are added... Problem is, you can't port MacOS to pc's or fancy workstations. (ok mac addicts can say pc's are junk but SGI's and alphas?)
If BeOS is being compared to a closed source UNIX then I guess Irix is the only candidate I can think of. Good enough for me-I hope SGI would consider BeOS instead of NT on their new visual workstations since they're not porting Irix to Intel.

it's great on Windows. Give corel a chance on linux
if you're using MS Office on linux then you might as well use windows. What's wrong with wordperfect?

membership does have its privileges. Interesting idea: configurable themes for slashdot?

It's FSF that's the church and RMS is the savior-not Linus.

good. we'll get our work done faster and better than you with your slow free bloated xwindows
you're forgetting the psx2 will also play all psx1 games. So the psx2 will automatically have more games than sega

now if bsd were to come to macs then you won't have the gpl problem. However, you still have the threat of Apple changing the code to mess BeOS up.

They're right here :)
http://www.broderbund.com/
They sell stuff I'm sure some linux users will appreciate

that sounds good as a name of a product...who knows-it could work
vomit comet...enlightenment themes...I get the connection :)
that's how alot of people learn javascript-they steal code from websites and modify it and then they're able to do their own stuff.
so make your own gimp site and call it gimpdot.org or something
