  1. Re:VNV Nation on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

VNV Vantion would be Trance with vocals. They're not really all that bad, but have seriously lost thier edge over the last few years, and are begnning to repeat themselves.

That being said, tracking down Praise The Fallen and the first Septic compilation for the demo mix of "Rubicon" is a must for anyone interested in EBM.

Of course, on the later CDs, Futureperfekt and Empires, you do have to tune the lyrics out a bit as they're alternatingly grandiose or asinine.

  2. Not a new thing... on Spoofing P2P Networks as Marketing Plot · · Score: 1

My buddies and I used to rename MP3s and share them on Napster. I used to laugh at the poor souls downloading Britney Spears. I would always wonder what thier reaction would be when they found that they were really songs by Noisex, Gridlock, and PAL.

  3. Re:I'm curious on Death of Decent Australian Broadband · · Score: 1

    > As fas as I know, other countries like Canada don't run caps.

Actually, both of the 'mainstream' broadband isps' (Rogers and Bell) are currently either putting caps in place or are about to impliment them.

Time for me to tighten the firewall rules and watch my own usage.

  4. Whats that saying again? on The Magic Box Hoax · · Score: 1

Oh yeah. Anything that seems too good to be true, usually is.

  5. Sure, but... on "Deep Linking" Controversy Renewed in Texas · · Score: 1

Next week Time Magazine will require you to read pages 1-36 before reading the article you want on page 37. Don't complain, it's their copyright ;)

Yes, but you plonked down the $5 for your copy of time magazine. You didn't for this newspapers web site. I had the same problem several months ago with people using deep linking to videos on my site. The result? I was getting nailed for the banwidth to provide content to other sites. Rather than kick and scream, I just locked thier site out. I feel that the newspaper in queston is well within thier rights to stop the deep linking. Though I will agree with the majority of people here in saying that the solution is technical, not legal.

  6. DK Said it best in 1985... on The Culture of CD Burning · · Score: 1

"...and sales are slumping, and no-one can say why. Could it be they ut out one too many lousy records?"

M.T.V.--Get Off the Air, from the album Frankenchrist.

Lets set aside the ridiculously hih prices charged for CDs. How many of us can sa that the world needs another boy/girl band?

  7. Re:The quality of reporting is often poor. on The Incredible Shrinking Antenna · · Score: 1

Fairly simple. A truck bumper is basically a horizontal peice of metal. Therefore it would be horizontally polarized. Which, unfortunately, is the opposite of the polarization of the receiving antenna.

This doesn't mean that it wouldn't work, but it would be very inefficient.

  8. Re:The Real Deal on Hack in Space · · Score: 1

    Very clever hack.

Though, you must admit that if the NASA scientists had the option of "rebooting" the satellite, they would have done that instead of coming up with a work around.

  9. Hey, I download the stuff. on Time on "Pirates of Primetime" · · Score: 1

But I also buy the VHS/DVD's as they become available. Last year I was actively participating in getting every existing episode of Dr. Who capped.

Did I stop buying the commercially available tapes? Nope. As it's been stated, I'd rather watch TV on my TV.

But until the Beeb gets around to releasing the last of the Baker videos, I'll happily watch them in DivX.

  10. Where does this leave the micro broadcaster? on Copyright Office Proposes Webcasting Regs · · Score: 1

Since 1998, I have run a weekly radio program: http://www.synthetic.org/ featuring new Electronic music acts. I've never taken a dime from anyone (except for a short period in '99 when banner ads made me a grand total of $75.) and have operated wth the tacit support of artists and labels.

Where does this leave me? Am I going to have to pay $.14 a song (x8 songs per show, x2000 listens per week) to do something that I started as an altruistic gesture to support the scene I love?

Thats $2,240 a week to help promote the music I enjoy. I've already thought of packing it in a few times, but if the RIAA is going to knock down my door for this, I have no choice but to drop out.

It's sad really. All I wanted to do was give back to the people who have created the music, and the people who listen to the music. I've always kept it on the up and up, no 128k mp3's. Any suggestions?
