  1. Same but different. on Building A Low-Budget TiVo Substitute? · · Score: 1

I realised that my collection of CDRs with TV burned on them was getting WAY out of control. Having leeched from usenet for 3+ years, I was getting well over 300 discs.

So I put together a PC with a few 80G drives and my old All In Wonder Radeon 7500. I also have the remote wonder that came with it. I'm thinking of grabbing a wireless keyboard and mouse so I can IRC at the same time. :)

While I don't use it to record TV, it's certainly drawn me back to watching some of these old shows I have.

For the record, I have a metric buttload of bought DVDs. I'm the poster boy for "Try before you buy" ... If I had a dime for every Jaguar I've bought for BBC executives...

  2. Re:Guh - What's happened to Pournell? on Dread Empire's Fall: The Praxis · · Score: 1

I just did a quick scan for Pournell on Amazon.com and essentially everything listed for him is "out of print" and only available through "zshops". I haven't seen anything from him in years (I always liked his stuff more than the people he recommended).

Unfortunately, Jerry is very poorly stocked most places. But then, a large number of his books were co-written with Niven, and all of those are still in print. Most of the books that are out of print are the shared universe collections of short stories, so I'm not terribly suprised.

As the AC failed to note, yes Jerry is currently finishing off a Burning Tower novel. Hopefully when he's finished He'll re-visit the Falkenburg universe. Hey, I tried to get into his "Fantasy" stuff (I know it's not really, but thats a close enough term) and was just unable to enjoy it. Hey, my loss!

(Also to the AC, Jerry, being as net savvy and pragmatic as anyone would at least pay attention. If enough people ask, and he's interested, he'll write it. Hey, if there's an audience that wants to buy it...)

  3. Guh on Dread Empire's Fall: The Praxis · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm glad someone else out there hates Honour Harrington as much as I do. Whenever I find books as bas as that never ending series, I always go back to the Falkenberg universe and sigh as I read about characters who have some motivation and depth.

On that note, who wants to start a petition to get Jerry to take a pause from writing Janissaires novels and get back to a book or two about the time between the Seccesion wars and the 2nd Empire?

I find it interesting that in the Simpsons DVD commentaries, (I beleive it was) Al Jean took a number of shots at Family Guy for ripping off thier style of nonsensical cut aways. After hearing that I went back to re-watch a few FG's and man he was right. Good show, but in retrospect somewhat derivative.

Comments like this always make me sigh to myself. You do realise that EVERY country that Germany attacked in WWII "crumbled almost immediately" as you so aptly put it.

Save England and Russia of course, who had the advantage of beneficial geography. Can't march an army across the channel too easily, and Russia was able to trade territory for time.

So get off your high horse and stick to arguing a subject you're informed about.

  14. Re:"Implication" on Dr. Dre to pay $1.5 mil for "Illegal Sample" · · Score: 1

Actually, you're mistaken there. Al asked for permission to parody Gangster's Paradise from the record label. The label, totally within thier rights, gave permission. Al had assumed that they'd ask Coolio. Apparently Coolio was none to thrilled.

I beleive they've worked it out, and Coolio knows that Al wasn't poking fun maliciously.

  15. Sampling vs. Stealing. on Dr. Dre to pay $1.5 mil for "Illegal Sample" · · Score: 2, Interesting

Well, I listen to "Industrial" music, where sampling is a major part of the music. Taking a quick sound bite from a movie, or the like is a far cry from building "your" song around a looped bit of music from the Rolling Stones (The Verve), David Bowie (Vanilla Ice) or any band on the planet (P. Diddy).

However, there are cases even withing the small genre of EBM/Industrial where the artists got a little sample happy. KMFDM had to re-release thier album NAIVE due to not clearing a huge sample from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. Actually, Apotheosis got burned for the exact same sample. One case that bugged me was a Toronto band, Malhavoc, having to do the same thing with an album because they sampled Mick Jagger screeching in Sympathy for the Devil.

The question begs asking though, how is that really any different from a band like Velvet Acid Christ who have sampled pretty much every word ever uttered by Brad Pitt.

Dr. Dre, and all of the other artists who "create" based solely around someone elses music are just getting what they deserve. Even in a clear case of parody like the Simpsons, Matt Groening et al. get permission before using a product name. (At least they used to.)

  16. Re:Respecting Canada on U.S. Says Canada Cares Too Much About Liberties · · Score: 1

I'm a brit, but things like this make me respect Canada. Particularly after watching Bowling For Columbine (watch it if you haven't).

Well, I have seen the movie and I have a few problems as well as a few arguements with it. The "slum" shown is along Lakeshore West in Toronto, and is brand new Ontario public housing. Taking the cameras through Parkdale or Jamestown in the same city would show a better picture. Regent park maybe? I mean, yeah, our slums are cleaner than US slums, but lets be a little more honest.
However, it *is* true about the unlocked doors. That made me stop and kinda realise I never lock my door when I'm home. I mean, I'm home, why should I lock it? Apparently this is diffirent in the states.

Of course, SP reduces that respect, as it tells me to hate canada. And they do have funny accents. And flapping heads.

You've gotta relax guy, take a load off. Put your feet up!

Actually, it wasn't "herpes" ... He was in a pub and was playing with a crew members dog. Apparently this dog went nuts when he heard the sound when you pop your mouth (think pop goes the weasel) and the dog jumped up and bit him on the lip.

This was covered for at the beginning of The Ribos Operation by showing a shot of him banging his face on the TARDIS console by accident.

Having had the pleasure of working with this unit over the past few weeks, let me say that it is *bliss* ... Anyone who would even consider using an mp3 source should check this unit out. Everything you can do on a turntable, you can do with this using CDs. Hideously expensive, but worth every penny in my book.
