Purchase some decent cast iron cookware. Good stuff will last your entire life, and then some. I have a few Le Crueset pots, pans and baking dishes. They have a ceramic surface that is tough, and mostly non stick without being as toxic as that thin sprayed on crap the pans at K-mart / Wal-mart use.

After I cook anything in those pots I can simply wipe them clean with a cloth and warm soapy water. They never need scrubbing. I heavy cast iron fry pan I use has a tough enamel surface that can be scrubbed hard with steel wool as often as you like. I'd have to burn something relentlessly badly in order to get anything stuck to these pans. By contrast, the stainless steel ones are a nightmare.

Eating TV dinners is it's own reward. I think I'll stick to old fashioned cooking and old fashion cookware - it's still the best there is.

    Quite possibly.

I studied a combined degree of computer science and business (first year only) at university back in the tail end of the eighties. In my first year there were approximately 250 students in the class, only 7 of whom were women. By the second year, there were only 170 students left, and only one of them was female.

I'm sure those figures have changed over the years, but it will still take a long time of 50 / 50 admission to the field before it's even close to parity on qualified, experienced and competent workers.

We already have that now, although it's a limited AI, not fully autonomous like many think of when speaking of AI. That's already quite dangerous enough.

    Totally agree.

  8. Missing the point on AI Experts Sign Open Letter Pledging To Protect Mankind From Machines · · Score: 1

Most people seem to have missed the point. There is as much reason to believe that AI will run rampant and exterminate all human life as there is that Mars Attacks. The danger from AI is not in it killing all humans, in the same way my PC can't kill all humans, nor can the datacentre run by Facebook (though there is a chance it will bore all humans).

The real issue is that when decent high level AI eventually becomes available it will rest solely in the hands of the super-wealthy, like 99% of all wealth currently. These people are basically sociopaths and will utilise and leverage every advantage the AI provides to bleed everyone else in the world dry. There is no limit to the amount of wealth these hungry ghosts crave.

You can see this at work currently in the retail sector, as all the retail outlets in the world fall into fewer and fewer hands. They strangle the suppliers, freeze out any who want take the pittance they offer, then engage in false competition and bleed the consumers dry as well.

In the stock market, these people use automated trading systems which game the system, leveraging sub-millisecond timing differences to profiteer off minute changes in instrument prices.

Militaries will make greater use of AI, drones and the like to suppress and control greater and greater areas of resources while reducing the risk to their personnel. States unable to compete with AI drones will have to risk vastly more to engage in any conflict than the ones who can simply roll more machines off the assembly line.

More simple jobs will simply vanish, such as a receptionist, who can be replaced by decent voice synthesis and fairly simple AI to take appointments, set up reminders, schedule, etc.

Someone will find a way for an AI to determine what is art based on a vast library of artistic images created by man over the millennia. They will then use an algorithm to create various derivative works in the style of the most popular artists, and the world will be flooded with the art equivalent of auto-tuned pop music. It's already been done to music, so expect it to happen to art in perhaps 30 years time.

I'm not really worried about what AI might do, but am terrified of what people will do with sufficiently advanced AI.

The belief that AI will rise up against humans and kill us all is on a par with the belief aliens capable of travelling universal distances at greater than the speed of light somehow need whatever crappy resources our little planet has. Spoiler alert, the minerals and such are no better than most asteroids and earth women don't sell well at the local galactic slave market.

Streaming really only makes sense to me for disposable music, like modern pop music. You know the stuff. The candy sweet radio friendly tunes that are auto-tuned to hell and EQ'd and processed to sound just like a previously successful pop song. The stuff you can hear a few times then want to turn off the radio if it comes on again. I don't listen to that sort of music, it bores me, so I don't bother with a streaming account.

I'm the sort of person who still buys albums, albeit on CD these days. I only buy the ones from artists which I think have a long shelf life and a lot of re-playability. I like the fact that I can toss on an album I've had for almost 30 years and just listen to it again, without needing an internet connection or a current subscription. I like that I get to hear the 'b-sides', the tracks which don't get promoted or aren't considered good enough for radio / streaming highlighting. I actually enjoy many of those tracks far more than the one or two that are there to sell the album. If an artist can't place 6-10 good tracks on a record, then I'm not really interested in hearing what they have to say.

I rip all my CDs to lossless FLAC, iTunes, and MP3 at the same time, then store the archive quality FLACs on my media server. ITunes can't play back FLAC, so I basically don't use it any more, preferring XBMC to get the job done.

I have about 350 albums now that I own and can playback whenever and wherever I choose without needing an internet connection or the permission of some greedy corporation who lock my playback down to only work on their hardware (I'm looking at you Apple!).

I've been collecting music for about 30 years now and still have access to every track I bought (bar the early stuff on LP). If I subscribed to a service for 30 years, all I'd have at the end is the sense of regret I couldn't listen to any music any more, despite the thousands I had spent on it over the years. That's approximately $5400 at today's rates, about the same as I pay for close to 380 albums. The cost is about the same, but if I stopped collecting today, I'd still have 350 albums to listen to.
