After reading the paper that 7th grader wrote, I can honestly say, it does not deserve a 100%. It was one of the most horribly written and unimaginative papers I've ever seen. Yes, even for a 7th grader.

But thats not the problem. The problem is, young kids on the fringe of social norms ARE getting hauled into the counselors office against their will.

Although it seems more prevalent today, this situation is not new. I remember back when I was a freshman in high school. I didn't get along well with many people, I was picked on, and generally, no one really liked me. One day, I was called down to the office to talk to the counselor. They wanted to know if I was trying to start a "Satanic cult" in school! I suppose it was because I was reading the Satanic bible. Now maybe some of you don't agree with that sort of thing. Thats not the point. The point is, I don't believe in God or the Devil. I was simply reading it out of curiosity. In fact, it was quite an interesting read. Unfortunatly, my teachers and counselors didn't see it that way. They called my folks and had a talk with me about the "evils of the devil and cults". They actually said they would prefer I read the Bible when I asked them if there were any difference between the two. I tried to explain to them that they were being hypocritical for suggesting one over the other as they were both religions.

Now, ten years later, I realise the sad truth is, this isn't a new problem and its not going to go away. The media coverage of shootings in schools has only strengthened the resolve of many administartors to terrorize innocent kids that are a little different.

The real question is, WHAT DO WE DO TO STOP THIS!

  10. BWP: Not as original as you might think. on Beware The Hype, Not the Witch · · Score: 1

First, I'd like to get something off my chest. The BWP is not a "teen" movie. It bothered me a little to hear Mr. Katz call it "teen" this and "teen" that. Scream, I know what you did last summer, and Urban Legend, are "teen" movies. They feature well known actors amongst the teen crowd. That is their driving point. The actors. BWP does not fit into this category.

Second, although I loved the BWP, it is my no means an original idea. Some of you may have heard of an offbeat Italian film called Cannibal Holocaust made in the 70s. If you havn't just go check it out... it has the exact same premise. A group of people go into the jungle to document some natives... they are never found... but their film is recovered and reveils the horror that they were subjected to. Granted, if you have seen this flick, you know that it is over the top gore. And I mean over the top. But it shows that the premise for the BWP is very similar.

I'm not trying to be nit-picky, but to call BWP completely original is not quite true. I am sure that BWPs filmmakers had seen Cannibal Holocaust - it seems like the type of flick that is right up their alley. BWP just made it acceptable for the big screen where movies like Cannibal Holocaust are never seen (not in the states at least).

    Thanks,

I tell them that all they have to do is plug it into the back of the computer and their done, but they want me to do it. Its a waste of my time, but what am I supposed to do?

The funny thing is, we all learned how to hook stuff into a computer in pre-school. The monitor only fits to the video card, the printer only to the parallel port, etc...

  13. To upgrade or not to upgrade... on All Hail Bloatware · · Score: 1

    ...That is the question.

The department I work for will, in the near future, be upgrading their copies of M$ Office 97 to M$ Office 2k. Why? Is it because Office 2k has features that, if gone without, would cripple the department? No. Is it because Office 2k will perform superior to Office 97. No? Is it because the deployment and maintenance is easier. No?

    Well, then what is it?

The reason they so feverously upgrade is simple. They NEED to maintain compatability with other departments that are upgrading. If they don't, documents between depts will be unreadable. They are being FORCED to upgrade only because others are doing so. They jump on the bandwagon and they can't get off.

So this begs the question, "Why are other departments upgrading?" The answer to this is even simpler. If you have worked as a SysAdmin for any lenghth of time, no doubt you have realised that when one person in the dept gets a "new", "cool" toy, every other clown will whine and whine until they get the same thing. Thats it. Its that simple. They just don't want to be the only one without the latest gizzmo. And you know, there is always someone in the dept that gets the latest toy because they THINK they need it.

Thats where M$ comes in. Thats where bloatware comes in. If they didn't chock the new software full of "must have" features, no one would buy it. Nevermind that when they do buy it, they won't use any of the new features. In fact, I think I would be hard pressed to find anyone in my dept that uses anything other than spellchecker.

So, to upgrade or not to upgrade? It all comes down to who has to have the latest toy. Features are packed in, thus making the software bloated, so that one person will want it just badly enough to buy it. Once that happens, everyone else follows the herd.

    Go figure.

It has been mentioned several times that PoSV is meant to be a purely entertaining piece. But I think the real point is not so much the acuracy of its technical details so much as it is the type charcaters it portrays.

Although the "film" is technically inaccurate and has a garbled, misleading time line, it shows quite well the content of the charcaters hearts. Even if the "non-geek" viewers out there think its fact (which they polly don't because most people are smarter than that), they still leave with the sence that these two guys (Gates and Jobs) aren't wonderful people that we should admire. I think that is the real point of the piece and I'll wager that a good number of the "non-geek" community realises that.

I have done this on numerous ocasions and most people are more than happy to acomidate my request.

This is a seriously overlooked issue IMHO. One that frustrates me to no end. I can't tell you how many people in my department have been REQUIRED to upgrade to the latest Office suite just to stay compatable. That and the fact that they will probably never use the added "functionality" the latest office suit provides. It is truely a tax on staying current and it must stop.

I was very happy to see this article concerning RedHat. I am quite fed up with the latest round of RH bashing that has been going on in the Linux community. It has to stop.

I've also noticed something of a trend among some RH bashers - they are Debian users. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to start a religious war here, I'm just saying that many of my friends who use Debian feel the need to bash RH simply out of spite.

I have three friends who avidly use Debian either at home or at work. Every time I talk to them about the latest Linux news, one of them has to ask, "You still using that piece of junk RedHat." To that I reply, "Yeah... of course." And I'm not afraid to admit it. I just want to know why it is that more often than not (in my experience) do Debian users feel the need to constantly put RedHat down? It doesn't make sense that the Linux community should fight over such things.

Debian is a great distribution - but so is RedHat.

I also have a few friends who use other distros such as Slack, and Caldera. They don't bash RH. In fact, they are quite happy with their distro and thats where it ends.

The great thing about all these distros is that we have the freedom to choose. Thats a great thing. We should revel in it - not fight about it.

To that I would like to add that I'm sick of hearing about vi vs. emacs, gnome vs. kde, etc, etc... its all a waste of time. Pick what you like and support it - believe in it - contribute to the development - but please, for god's sake, stop the pointless bickering over which distro is better than another!

The Linux community has the last word on what stays and what goes. If we don't like it, if it violates our philosophy, if it goes against our beliefs, we don't have to support it. Just like we don't support M$ or the closed source software community.

Disclaimer: Please don't construde this response to mean that I hate Debian, Slackware, or any other distro - I don't. I love them all and I wish each of you the best of luck with whatever choice you have made. Just stop the arguing - please.

  18. RedHat get a bad rap... on CNN interview with RedHat · · Score: 1

I am unhappy with the way Red Hat software is received by some people in the Linux community. Prior to using RH, I was a devoted Slackware user. I switched to RH to see what all the hype was about. I'll admit, I have only been privy to 5.1, 5.2, and 6.0. But I can honestly say that I have been very happy with the switch. I have never experienced any major bug or installation errors as some claim. Of the small bugs that I have run into, they were easily fixed. This is not to say that others have not had major problems. But in general, I think RH gets an unfair rap from many people. If I were to complain about RH, I might mention the price hike in the most recent version. However, since I can download 6.0 from just about any good ftp site, or purchase a copy from cheapbytes.com for $1.99(US), I don't see why this price hike is such a big deal. I could alo complain about how some RPM packages are setup in a non-standard way. However, I am not forced to use RPM packages as I can compile and install on my own with little or no trouble. In fact, many of the problems I have run into while using RH were due to my own mistake and not theirs. Granted, the latest versions are not without their bugs, but this is easily fixed and RH usually jumps on this pretty quickly. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to start some religious debate about which distro is the best. Nor is RH the be all, end all of distros. I just think that because of its high profile and media attention, RH is getting an unfair rap for what is otherwise a decent distro for both developers and regular users.
