    you can track the status.

    Use a perl (or some other language that handles everything manually*) script to receive the upload submission and write it to disk in a known location with a known name*. A second script can then compare the file size as it's uploading. Somewhat ugly

    * PHP won't work since file uploading is handled behind the scenes.
    ** this may involve storing statistics in a database, manipulating session data, etc.

    This morning, I tweaked a complex (longer than your post) DB query to run in 20 seconds instead of 20 minutes. Database design makes a huge difference (and knowing what's indexed, but form should follow function).

    given the US cell structure, the need for backend features (visual voice mail, etc), and the need for a flat fee data plan, they'd be hard pressed to try it on their own.

    But they're using the same structure in other markets when they could license (or give away) the visual voice mail specs and allow everyone to be iPhone compatible.

    the iPhone SDK uses llvm gcc. LLVM does optimization (often better than hotspot since there are more CPU cycles and memory than on the iPhone) when it is converted to ARM binary code

    the iPhone DSK uses llvm gcc to do ARM compilation. LLVM (low level virtual machine) does similar optimizations when converting to the target executable. With the advantage that it's being done before hand on a faster computer with a lot more memory, so it can be more aggressive.

    Look at teh number of online music stores that have failed -- Napster (2.0), Walmart, that MTV one, buy.com, and more. Those were all properly financed and they found out there's no room for profit. The only people making money are MS (by licensing PlaysForSure), the RIAA, and Apple (but only on the hardware).

    OS X proves that a PDF reader can be as fast as HTML. Faster in some cases -- no need to lay out and render large tables, complex CSS, etc.

    Earlier this year, we (fortune 1000 company) switched from a mixture of Linux/Windows 2003 to Solaris just for ZFS. (We have a few remaining Windows boxes which we may always be stuck with). We were hoping ZFS would make it's way into Linux (we were ready to put up a lot of cash to make it happen). All the dick wagging and license posturing made us re-evaluate our commitment to linux.

    they already have winter, spring, and fall. MS allows free (as in no cost, not five finger discount) downloads of all their programming/OS/Server software at my uni. (This is something MS "donated", they aren't getting paid for it).
