    After graduating college, I pretty much accepted the first reasonable job offer thrown my way. After a few years of not enjoying it, I had saved up enough so I quit and didn't worry about working. During my next round of job interviews, I wasn't desperate for a job, so my standards were a lot higher.

    I interviewed with Google last year and was somewhat disappointed. We've all heard great things (free sushi, free coke, 20% of your time on unrelated side projects, etc), but from what I saw during the interview and looking at the state of non-core google projects, I decided I'd rather be elsewhere.

    Depends what your business is. Some of the software I use daily is Windows only. Some of it is IE only. Some of it is IE 6 + .NET 1.0.2 only.

    Read the PDF. In particular, the part about using OS protection mechanisms rather than reinventing the wheel.

    I met Peter 3-4 years ago at a conference and all in all I think he'd be a good choice. Of course, ICANN politics and bureaucracy prevents any meaningful change. However, I'm somewhat concerned that he's never explained his role in the yahoo typosquatting incident.

    as far as the actual language is concerned (DOM, event handling, browser problems will be there for every language), PHP is a turd compared to javascript.

    Compare javascript anonymous functions with PHP anonymous functions.

    PS: javascript can be used for functional programming.

    silverlight is .net, so any .net language. Flash is scripted with a Javascript variant and Adobe/Macromedia is pushing the javascript changes big time.

    A client side language with the sort of feature set that perl or ruby or python has would be death on a plate in the context of a modern web browser; you'd go to a webpage and it wouldn't just slip you a trojan--it'd reinstall your OS.

    Hint: Javascript is turing complete. A ruby interpreter can be written in Javascript. The browser sandboxes the scripting language. It's not an issue.

    my favorite is the jackass that replaces an input type="submit" with an input type="button" and adds a keydown event handler to submit the form when return is pressed and an onclick event handler to submit the form when the button is clicked.

    Look at the numbers. This year, PS2 console sales are expected to be 13 million. Total PS3 sales (to date): 6.5 million. Total XBox 360 sales (to date): 13 million. Total wii sales (to date): 13 million.

    Since newer PS3s are reducing (or eliminating) PS2 compatibility, I'm wondering if Sony is going to try to split them into 2 different product lines and keep their PS2 cash cow around for as long as they can.

    interesting. Sun's aware of GPL v3 and what it means (eg, they have discussed licensing open solaris as GPL v3 to prevent code from being used by linux). I'm guessing they don't want to give up their patents just yet. Don't forget they paid SCO.

    Apple sold 2.1 million macintoshes last quarter (and therefore 2.1 million copies of OS X 10.3) -- more than 20% of Vista's sales. With 10.4 having been released 3 days ago, this quarter's sales numbers should be interesting.

    time machine only backs up files that are actually changed. The initialization (when everything is copied) would be slow, but after that it wouldn't normally be a problem.

But looking at the story and firehose submission (done under a presumably real name and web address), I would never otherwise associate them.     chain of custody is important for proving guilt (beyond a reasonable doubt). Exculpatory evidence doesn't need such high standards (it just needs to give a judge or jury doubt).

    At least in theory. Traffic court judges exist mainly to uphold a cop's decision.

    Bookpool doesn't have amazon's selection, but for computer/tech books, their prices are better. I haven't purchased anything from them in a while, but they currently seem to have free shipping on orders > $40.
