  1. Re:Do they use JIT? on Bochs 2.0 Released · · Score: 1

bochs doesn't just remulate an x86 chip, it also has to emulate hardware (and video), check memory accesses, etc, so a 10% increase in x86 emulation doesn't cause a 10% increase in overall performance... though inlining would certainly get rid of function setup/teardown code and allow for better register optimization in the core.

  2. Re:Why so slow? on Bochs 2.0 Released · · Score: 2, Informative

PPC was designed with emulation in mind. When you have 32 gp registers, it's easy to alias them to the x86's 8 gp registers. Also, VPC is a commercial product written by people that have *years* of experience writing x86 emulators back when Macintoshes were running on 680x0s at 40mhz or less. The GNU coding standards state that it's ok to assume unlimited core memory, processing power, etc.

well, premature optimization is the root of all evil... I haven't checked the source code, but modern compilers (gcc, icc) can inline some functions if given the incentive to do so, which would give a small speed bump.

So I think it would be best to bite the bullet and go all the way. It will require some planning -- the gcc folks would have to decide gcc will read unicode in 4.0, and Linus would have to decide linux 3.0 will be in unicode. Then the various distributions will have to come out with "unstables" or "rawhides" or whatever they call them, and slowly beat thousands of little apps each with their own presumptions on the size of a text character into submission.

gcc is a poor place to start the unicode revolution. A more reasonable starting point would be a --utf flag for the gnu text utils, [ef]grep, etc.

GCC does support using L".." to generate unicode/wide string constants, and has for quite a while.

WRONG! gnu configure checks which compiler and version you're using, but it spends most of the time checking for #include files, libraries, and functions. Those are dependent on the OS and libraries installed, not the compiler.

GCC proper doesn't use any extensions (since it may be compiled by a non-gcc compiler).
