    AppleScript was part of MacOS System 7 (1993).
    NeXTApple pretty much abandoned WebObjects (which was unfortunate because it is really cool) but at least they dropped the price from $50,000 to $0.

    $200 vs $100 isn't a big deal, particularly if this thing is targeted towards businesses. And it's $0 today. Perhaps the biggest problem with the iTunes App Store (and Google Marketplace) is the spam apps -- shit that takes little or no time to build and has no value. RSS feed apps, wallpapers of images from other games, copy/paste a wikipedia article, "howto: guides for other games, etc. Putting a price on it should eliminate some of that shit.

    Drinking saltwater is a dumb idea, but salt isn't evil. Drink your piss sometime. Taste salty? That's right, your body is quite efficient at getting rid of excess salt, minerals, vitamins (water soluble ones, at least), etc.

    But, but, but, I ate 3 bags of potato chips a day for 60 years and now I have health problems! It must be the salt, couldn't possibly involve my lifestyle.

    Maybe google engineers want to show off how smart they are by validating x86 code. And x64 code. And ARM code. Or maybe it's a poorly thought out research idea. At least they are working in PNaCl, which uses llvm bytecode instead of x86/x64/arm/mips/???.

    V8 compiles javascript to native code, so in that sense it is native speed. The limiting factor is interacting with the HTML DOM/CSS.

    app wasn't solely developer lingo -- dating back to NeXTStep, .app was the suffix for application bundles, like .exe/.com for MS-DOS.

    After the Rim buyout, they closed down all access to the source code.
