Just realize that that "janitor" making "$47" per hour is really the only job left making steady wages over time. The few powerful unions are the only ones that actually KEPT up with inflation [generated by playing the stock market!] over the last 30 years. What you should be asking is why average American wages are 9-15 per hour. While the corps make record profits of..Billions!
Like you said, the "deal" is that US corps, not citizens, are reaping the profits of "Free Trade" After all, they can shut out all their american workers, but still post record profits for the american & forign stockholders. What's not to like (for them)
exactly, there have to be changes to the system. After all, 1 Million Dollars to an executive is 30 average american workers out of work! Average workers here only make mid 30's for pay. Many do make 50-60's...by working 55-70 hours a week!!!! that's slave labor hours!
They are purposefully sacerficing the domestic stability for easy money on wall street. This is the same thing as the 20's all over again, just different names.
Right now we're dealing with Deflation, and nobody wants to say it! People don't have any money! They are paying off Credit cards, getting out of debt [or bankrupt] and planning for worse. That means companies have to discount deeper and deeper just to move the stock on the shelves. Look at interest rates, The whole Fed % is a joke...and it always was. Greenspan's rate is really just a suggestion, only very desperate banks ever actually borrow that money at that rate. As the market proved, the actual market rate is actually LOWER than the Fed!!! Again, I ran accross an old newspaper remodeling, and we're getting back to 1950's business rates for profits and interest...only the "powers" don't want to admit that yet. Worse, they expect the Govt to let them take out their death throws on their employees, while at the same time those same employees are STILL making record productivity gains!
The general vibe of the FCC lately is that all things should be directly under corperate control, and corps can regulate/ censor/ monopolize as they see fit. We've already seen that with Cable companies and Broadband...and are soon to see it with DSL because the FCC won't enforce [and has no intention to!] the sharing rules they already have. It's only a matter of time before all cariers of Broadband or DSL are considered "content providers" like AOL....with no restrictions on services rendered, blocked or otherwise interfered with.
The path is already set...the FCC doesn't have the balls [citizen backlash and all] to give the corps everything they want...yet!
Really, they need a number freeze first! How about they get 2.6 fixed up real good before they move on. After all, they may need to rewrite something that's horribly broken 9 months from now [hint: again!] Seriously, how bout they stick with 2.6 for 6-9 months and see how it actually performs in the real world. There's features people wanted in 2.6 because of the performance of 2.4, but 2.5 was already too far along to "add" them. That really shouldn't happen again. How will you really know what people NEED in 2.8 if you start on it NOW, before any one really USES 2.6!
One sign of product maturity is to slow down releases. It's Open Source...there's no rush for market share here. As a matter of fact, rushing like this makes it LOOK like all the "pros" are moving on like kids with ADD to the next cool thing. That's not a good value to the "customers" linux is trying to win over.
After all the BSP/IP system should always be enabled. This one techonlogy could convince even the most diehard/.er of the need for DRM. If we did have such a great and wonderful system, we'd want to ensure that it was ALWAYS operational when users were on/.! You'd need a/. signed kernel to prevent trolls from posting then "ducking" out of the concequences
Isn't that the point of Linux being able to use virtual machines right now. You can have a "Master" kernel that mearly directs hardware, and all the work done by the virtual ones. Then you really can end one virtual one while the other is still running, and without rebooting the machine. Because the Master is only directing the virtual machines, there is already super strict security/limited usage in place. It wouldn't have to be strictly up-to-date because no processes should ever be able to actually access IT. That's all the virtual machines...
Yeah, too bad they didn't take simple lessons in planning from that OTHER loosely coordinated collection of independent machines and networks that WAS built for stability over profit!
True, but Networks behave very oragically. They may have many "pieces" but the whole has a life of it's own. It is good to compare them to software though. After all, the current situation is much like Windows OS. Arbitrary connections between components based [and maintained] on profit motive rather than health of the network...And just like windows, it leads to a wreck. Now a system built on network principles where each part has limited access and limited ability to adversly affect other parts, like Unix, will be secure and robust. Like many people said while it was happening, it had all the characteristics of a Lan storm...That's been dealt with in Unix software years ago...
Why is that tech not implemented in the nation's power grid?....we're waiting on that one!
Other than the practicality of taking out locations over 1000 miles from end to end. Most of the parts are self-sufficent. If it wasn't for the bungled interconnects, the only blackouts would have been local occurances....It's sort of like windows worms lately...everything is interconnected for no GOOD reason..other than profit. That leads to taking chances with the system that are unacceptable.
Besides, the only country capable of doing that right now is the US. When George gets around to it, we'll have much bigger problems than power on our hands, won't we!
Chemically, it wouldn't really matter anyway. Florine is in the same family as Chlorine on the table. It has basicly the same chemical properties, but is a bit more reactive. Any affects from florine would be nearly indistingushible from the effects of the chlorine necessary to keep the bugs out of the water.
Yeah, but on a Apple 23" cinema display you can fit 2 [count 'um] letter-sized pages side by side at 100% That makes most document editing tasks imensely easier. Really, it's truly amazing when you can look at two full pages with NO SCROLLING! It's not just time, but that little bit of fustration, effort to keep tagging the mouse.
I really think that we need to develop GUIs to get rid of mice. They're great and all, but like many posters have said, the real gain is from not fsck'ing with the mouse constantly. I'd like most apps to be full screen, with a dial or keyboard button to quickly filp between apps [maybe screenshots?] Media players and calculators would be types of exceptions, but with multiple monitors lots of options are available...you can make a computer act "like a book" rather than some "desktop pages" thing.
But part of longhorn will be MSN lock-in as well. MSN has many cool "mozilla-like" features plus a few that they should copy. Of course it only works with Microsoft's service...get the picture.
Frankly, we need to find a way to migrate the Win9X crowd to Linux [or other AltOS] After all, MS has openly stated that new office software won't work for 9x anymore [XP is EOL]. I have lots of PCs at my shop that are perfectly servicable [but very slow] but Linux just can't replace ALL the MS apps, or at least emulate them good enough....particularly drivers, and other "glue" programs.
Just look at the MSN service. The MSN browser has most of the cool features of Mozilla and AOL. Tabs, integrated IM, shared browsing, file sharing...It's just that you have to purchase [and pay] the MSN internet service to get it!
But that's OK. It's not like they are using thier monopoly on IE to tie it to another MS purchased feature.....????
Cool idea! Too bad we don't have any tech schools or major universities to help impement such a thing. Or even a concerned citizen or two. Perhaps local residents...with a Linux friendly web site...that may have been founded in "Michigan"...Who are now having kids that have to live with these screwed up schools...
Unfortunately, there are no Linux gurus in Michigan. Sad to say. If Slashdot admins lived in Michigan I'm sure they would write to their reps. Perhaps they would even post an "Ask Slashdot" and get some ideas...throw something together...
That might happen here...we've got those crazies too.
But, Michigan is a unique state...After all, the Captial building is walking distance from a Major GM assembly plant, and accross town [ok, you need a bus ride] from a Big Ten University. Most of the time the lawmakers really think stuff thru before passing laws.
Part of the reasoning has to be the very strong School of choice movement in Michigan [I live here!]
Other than religous schools, it's pretty much carte blanc what school you want to go to..if you can get in. All the schools get the same funding, so a small Uni-backed, parent supported school can pay a non-union teacher 2/3 pay and offer lots of "perks" for the students that the larger public schools, that have to accept everyone in their district, can't. There's a real threat to the school system here because the money is draining out of the public schools. It dosen't cost $6k to teach every student, but part of that money goes to facility maintenance, computers, gymnasiums, libraries, chem labs, career centers, etc that these charter schools just don't provide. Many of the Charter schools get each family a computer for their home to do homework and stuff on [they save that much money on other stuff] I think Granholm is trying to get some of the students back!
Frankly, before they get computers, they need software to run on them. I haven't seen a really good educational software package anywhere that would suit the needs of said students. The state should be investing in OSS software for all the schools to use FIRST. Then if it's really good, get computers for the students. That said, many schools in the state already have computer labs with fairly modern PCs. Michigan is really 3 parts, Detroit/city, suburban outstate, and rural. The detroit & rural schools need this most, they have been hit worst by the former governer's budget "toying" the suburban schools are mostly doing fine, we're willing to pay extra tax to make up for His errors. But, the school of choice is really cutting into the suburban schools [you know grass is greener... type stuff] So they really need the PR boost.
Michigan public school teachers are some of the highest paid, strongest union in the country. They don't make IT style wages, but my grandmother was a teacher and had union benifits even retired, that put even the UAW to shame.
They already have 25-30 kid limits per class.
The only pressing issue is that facilities and maintenance is lacking. Former goverenor Engler used the stable-well supported school budgets as a political bargining chip for far too many years...michigan's fiscal year begins in some weird month like october. This leads to promising schools money in August, school starting, then changing the funding after the money is already spent. This happened almost every year he was Governer. They [grade school- uni] learned cope, but it's make them all lean and mean...hence the tuition increases at the Unis like UM and M State..
Does linux have a BSOD module in the kernel? It really should have one because Windows has one. How else will windows users know what's wrong with their computer.
comming soon...Random reboot module...just to keep up the Windows look and feel...
What would it take to map all of the GUI functions to meaningful keys on a keyboard? Also, to layout the GUI to be fully keyboard controlled?
I know most functions can be keyboard controlled in mostOSes, but I'd like a GUI layout that was exclusively keyboard [after all, they can make video games with only 9-13 usable buttons! why do I need 108+]...with the symbols|shortcuts|mappings clearly marked in the GUI/keyboard. Oh, I don't want MORE keys, and I'd prefer FEWER keys than we use now...ala Happy Hacker Kbd!
hey, it's a goal. But it's something to make Linux/OSS unique!
Yes, but not even Microsoft has ALL the patches posted for automatic update. Even with MS you have to do a fair amount of legwork for the non-common programs.
First, you have to have a person find and catalog a location of a patch..possibly a random FTP site.
I sounds like there are several people at various locations doing this with him. The idea here appears to be to share, and to provide a catalog of sites for easy access should the need arise. Then, even if it requires some manual work, at least they can FIND the patches, then share the patches. Which in itself is the biggest part of the admining of multiple machines.
Same as road rules. You have reasonable expectation to drive down the road in piece. Of course, there also hot rodders & dump trucks that feel the need to use residental roads too much and, of course, get nailed. Just like you wouldn't expect a large truck or racer to constantly drive by your house, you don't expect people using your ISPs, or home email box, for unsolicited mass emails.
For a matter of fact, the key to limiting [insert canned-meats procuct by Hormel] is to come up with similar "road rules" that ISPs can automatically implement that will allow their users occasional overages, but quickly and efficently trap the abusers. If that's in place properly, even the spammers have some more privacy because there's less "people" work involved in eliminating them. Fewer nasty-grams from ISPs, RBLs, and users trying to find their house....Unless of course they KEEP doing it!
We could pass a law requiring that valid ID, date, and time be recorded for each search of RFID tags in the corperate databases. Then you could check in on your stuff from time to time to see who's been checking on You. Oh, absolutely NO exceptions for law enforcement of ANY kind!
And if something was scanned that's been hidden under a mattress for 6 months then you'd know you have a problem.
Requiring law enforcement is only fair...If they want an "open" society, fine! But it has to be open for everyone, not select groups "poaching" info off the rest! We should be able to see where THEY'VE been too!
Certian Notebook and chipset manufacturers petitioned the board to make this change because CONSUMERS were passing up USB 1.1 spec'd computers for USB 2.0 spec'd computers. There was no confusion at all here. For a matter of fact, they are sowing confusion, not fixing it.
Because the USB 2.0 "mark" being used by many manufacturers was never offically sanctioned by the "committee" they decided to change the tradename rather than simply say "tough luck" So Now pretty much everything is USB 2 [note: not USB 2.0] because even USB 1.1 mice "comply" with the USB spec...backward compatibility and all. So you're suppose to look a the little USB "pluggie thing" Only the ones with the red "Hi-Speed" flag are actual "USB 2.0" devices.
Like was said before, this was a rotten idea from the get-go by the industry board to appease a few vendors "stuck" with large quantity of stock. Basicly, they changed the "standard" even though public preception fully understood it! That's deceptive advertizing at it's finest.
Yes, but shooting people and govt agents [note seperation] is already illegal! All much of the laws right now do is make stuff "more" illegal. That clogs the courts with frivolous cases over technicalities [too close to a school, airport, car, etc.] by the cops instead of catching the people ACTUALLY COMMITTING CRIMES. Like I said above, if you want any of the "illegal" arms you can get them with enough $$/ patience. If you're planning on shooting the lawman, you don't really care that the gun is illegal, do you!
The balance is to repeal the stupid laws and hold people severly accountable for their own actions. This includes holding teens accountable that take dads gun out, not the dad. We also need to purge the court system of those who "game" it.
Like you said, the "deal" is that US corps, not citizens, are reaping the profits of "Free Trade" After all, they can shut out all their american workers, but still post record profits for the american & forign stockholders. What's not to like (for them)
