OK, now I'm running Outlook under WINE. The Outlook solution is cheaper. :)

  2. Re:Few Points on Will Evolution Exchange Microsoft? · · Score: 2

It's not incredible. The client access license is like a client license for a server. Out of the box Exchange may only be licensed for like 20 clients. To connect more than that you buy client licenses. When I buy one of those I can use Outlook if I want.

  3. Few Points on Will Evolution Exchange Microsoft? · · Score: 3, Interesting

First, a user doesn't REQUIRE full access to a Windows system. Just like UNIX, I can log in as root if I want, but it's not always a good idea. Set your users up to be just users and they'll have a harder time killing the system. Outlook 2000 is always more secure in regards to viruses. It won't let you run many attachments directly, and it will prompt you before letting something access your address book.

Second, Evolution costs more than Outlook in an Exchange environment. When you buy an Exchange client license you get with it an Outlook license. If I were to use Evolution I'd still have to purchase the Exchange client license PLUS the Evolution connector for Exchange. So, it's not always cheaper.

Finally, I consider Exchange to be Microsoft's best product. The server is very robust and extremely reliable. A good Exchange admin can set up Exchange and only needs to do minor maintenance and it'll run itself. Notice I said a GOOD admin...not just someone off the street. My Exchange servers run until something else, such as a hardware repair or firmware update, requires me to restart the system. The only software restarts I have to do usually are the fault of anti-virus software getting hung. Now that we've switched to Antigen those have gone away as well.

  4. No excuse. on Klez, The Virus that Keeps on Giving · · Score: 2

Klez was very slow to spread at the beginning. Even if for some odd reason someone STILL doesn't block dangerous attachment types, they should have updated their AV software by now. I mean, they all do it automatically. If you aren't blocking attachments and running a GOOD anti-virus software (I recommend Antigen for Exchange) you better get that resume ready.

  5. The DVD Set is Good on Transformers On the Move Again · · Score: 4, Informative

The new DVD set is very good. They remastered all of the sound to DD5.1 and touched up the color on the film. The sound is very good, as they split up the channels and really use the sub-woofer and rears. The video is very clear and doesn't look dated or faded like some others.

I hope they reissue the toys in the US, I'd buy some. I just won't pay what the Japanese imports cost.

Halo, one of the best console games ever.

THPS3 (Again, shown to be clearly best on XBox)
    RalliSport (GREAT racing game)
SSX Tricky (Again, shown to be best on XBox)

A lot of the games can be had on other systems, but look at comparisons and you'll see that they are the best on XBox. Better graphics, better sound, and widescreen.

It doesn't matter what the PS/2 has when the games look bad. It's hard for me to play a lot of them because the graphics are so jagged. No contest, the XBox games look far better than the PS/2 games. Go look at some comparisons between the same game.

  11. XBox is a great system. on Salon Goes Inside the X-Box · · Score: 5, Insightful

I have all the current consoles, in fact, I have almost every console that has been made.

Of the current three the best hardware is the XBox. You get the HD for saving games and adding levels/characters/etc. You get true high definition support. True wide screen support. And very good Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The GC game selection isn't very good, but it's cheaper. It has no DD and not all games support 480p resolution. The PS2 can only do DD in cut scenes. Not many games at all do wide screen. Both the GC and the PS2 still use memory cards. The XBox also has the shortest load times for games by far. The XBox also has built-in Ethernet.

As for game selection the PS2 wins, mainly because it's been out so long that the good games have appeared. Nintendo needs to get their Mario/Zelda/Metroid games out NOW. Microsoft is steadily releasing good games. Also, go hit IGN sometime when a game comes out on all three consoles. They have started doing very good side-by-side-by-side comparisons, and the XBox always wins. Better graphics, better sound, and sometimes extra levels/characters/etc.

Microsoft won't lose this. They have far more plans for this system than a simple game console. Give them another year to get even more good games out and we'll see what happens.

  12. Re:It was born dead already on Salon Goes Inside the X-Box · · Score: 3, Informative

Blah. Dolby Surround. DD is getting very popular with DVDs and "Home Theatre in a Box" setups.

The XBox does 720p and 1080i, just no games do it yet.

  17. XBox has higher geek factor. on PS2 Vs. X-Box: Winner Emerging? · · Score: 2

Out of all the current consoles the XBox has the best features. Widescreen support, every game with Dolby digital, high definition support, Ethernet, and a hard drive. The PS2 has limited widescreen support and it can only do DD in cut scenes. The Cube has no DD support and no high definition.

The PS2 has been out longer so the 2nd and 3rd gen games are out for it. Just wait for the later XBox games. The DD already makes a huge difference in some games. You haven't played Halo until you've done it on a big screen with a good sound system.

  18. Disappointing... on Internal MP3 Server? 1 Million Dollars Please · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm rather disappointed in the postings on this....even from Slashdot. Assuming the article is correct, and I know that's a big assumption, this company basically sponsored piracy. They paid for a server specifically for music sharing. That's a "bad thing". There is a very big difference between someone bringing in MP3s and a company sponsoring the sharing of them. The company puts itself at VERY large risk for such things. I'm a network admin at a medium sized company and I don't even allow Gnutella/Napster/Kazaa clients to run...at all.

This isn't fair use. They didn't let a friend borrow the CD. They ripped the CD and put the files on a server for everyone to get. Fair use may have a case should there have been software on the software to let a user "check out" a song and while it was checked out, no one else could access it. But I really don't think that was the case, do you?

I've known companies that had MP3 servers, but they were always known by the users. They weren't ever really recognized by management. I bet many of those go away tomorrow morning when word of this gets out.
