  1. Home made TiVo on Slashback: Elaboration, The number 4, Toys · · Score: 4

If anyone thinks they can easily make a TiVo like setup out of a off the shelf linux machine they've never used the TiVo. The appeal of the TiVo just isn't recording TV to MPEG it's the interface, the channel guides, the TiVo suggestions, etc. With the price at only $299/$399 I just don't think it's worth the effort.

You should write a HOWTO. There is a ton of good info on avsforum but it's so spread out and pieced together that it's hard for most to follow. A good HOWTO would be great.

I have the Sony Tivo and LOVE it. Very good tool.

There have been several attempts to hack and upgrade the Tivo with varying degrees of success. Several people have upgraded their 14 hour version to the 30 hour. As for hacking it to do something else, you can buy an eMachine Celeron 500 right now for $399. Is it worth it?

I'm not saying you can't choose video card XYZ and sound card ABC...I'm saying you don't even get the normal options like you do on the non-linux systems. Even with driver support you don't have choices. On the ones I looked at a few weeks ago, you couldn't even change the mouse or amount of RAM. That makes no sense.

  13. The problem is... on Dell & IBM Both Shipping Linux · · Score: 4

My problem with Dell and their pre-loading of Linux is that the selected models they have with it are config locked. You usually can't even add memory to the system. You take it as they spec'd it out or you don't get linux on it. But at least they ship it. We just switched to Gateway at work and I had to order my Athlon with 98 and Office. There was no choice for linux so I had to pay the MS tax.

The articles mention DSL and cable setups which is a good topic. I think you'll see a huge boom in the security software (BlackIce) and hardware (NETGEAR nad LinkSys NAT boxes) markets very soon, even larger than it is now. It just begs the question why aren't these companies doing this now? It wouldn't be hard to ship every cable/dsl modem with integrated NAT and have it enabled unless the customer specifically requested otherwise. It would be much more secure than just an open connection. People try to hit my cable modem ALL day long.
