  1. They are doing what Napster asked... on Shut Down Metallica, Not Napster · · Score: 4

Napster said that they would block any user pirating MP3s on their system. They just needed a list. So this is what Metallica did. Stealing MP3s is illegal. Get over it. If you want to do it fine, but don't whine when you get caught or Napster blocks you. If CDs cost too much, don't buy them. Eventually the market will evolve where they are cheaper. But the bottom line is that it is theft, plain and simple. Argue it any way you want but it is still theft. It's their music to sell as they want for however much they want. That is a free market. If it costs too much buy someone elses music that is cheaper.

  3. Something Similar Starting Here on Using Bandwidth Of HDTV · · Score: 1

They are doing a beta roll-out here of sending data through the Digital TV streams. You get a digital TV antenna and a card that goes in to your PC to watch Digital TV on your PC as well as receive other information at the same time. Check out http://www.dtvplus.com. Could be interesting.

  4. Batter Life on Hands-On Review of PocketPC · · Score: 1

You have to consider that Palm and CE vendors report battery life differently. Palm says 2 weeks for my Vx, but that's at about 30 mins use per day, for a total of 8 hours which is close to a CE device. If I use it a lot it goes down quickly.

So buy a Palm Vx and an OmniSky like I have. Full IP connectivity with a static IP. But, the web clipping works well for most things. To get information for weather, movies, airline tickets, etc it is quick and effective.

  7. I disagree... on Suck On Skins And UI · · Score: 1

They are for hackers until the skins and themes are easy to install. When all it takes is a few point and clicks they become mainstream quickly. Most "end users" I know tha thave used a PC for a little while change the way it looks drastically. Just ask anyone that does desktop support and they will tell you stories of the awful fonts and colors that people use and think look good. :) Every time I go see my mom she has a different theme and color scheme on her PC. These changes may not be as drastic as how "hackers" change themes and such but it's mainly due to limitations in Windows. If Windows could do what X does, no two desktops would look the same.

  8. Be warned... on Netscape 6 Preview Release · · Score: 1

The Windows version has no uninstall. Also, I can't get rid of that annoying side bar like I can with Mozilla.

  9. Re:No Binaries for other *nix's!!!! on Netscape 6 Preview Release · · Score: 1

Well...Yes, it can be a lot of trouble. Remember that Netscape has to support the browsers they release. To release on another chipset requires testing and validation just like they do on the x86 chipset. Maybe if enough people email to complain they'll see it's worth the effort.

  10. The Article Wasn't Removed on The Dual 1GHz Pentium III Myth · · Score: 1

It looks like they restored the site from backup...that is several days old. I write for HWC and if you look the main site is up. But even a review I did the other day is missing off the front page.

  14. As an MCSE.... on Red Hat Takes Heat Over Certification · · Score: 1

I see nothing wrong with the Red Hat certification process. I've had my MCSE for over 4 years. These days any idiot can get one. At least with the Red Hat cert you must take a lab exam. Yes, it costs more but you get more. If you want to complain about price go look at Cisco's CCIE.

  16. Re:My concerns on 5GB portable MP3 Player · · Score: 1

This is why they use 2.5" notebook drives instead of just a normal hard drive. Notebook drives aren't unbreakable but they can handle a lot more abuse than a normal drive. My notebook has been thrown around in airports and cabs and still works just fine. The downside is that notebook drives are very expensive in relation to normal drives. Upgrading from a 4GB to a 10GB can be VERY costly.

There are some unencrypted DVDs out there. The ones I've seen are porn movies but they say on the case that it isn't encrypted. They play fine.

  18. Re:Palm access? on Net Access on an American Road Trip? · · Score: 1

An even better idea would be the OmniSky. It gives the Palm V or VX true IP connection and unlimited access. So far it is working well. But, wireless coverage still isn't there yet for almost everyone.
