They should have loaded a BSD or Linux (same kernel versions) onto each computer, just to rule out OS benchmarking.
Not to mention similar graphics cards, ram, hard disk, etc. This is one of the worst benchmarks I've ever seen. What a joke!
Actually, the fact that they allow your ports to be probed is a tribute to the freedom of your ISP. With many other broadband ISP's most of your ports are blocked, so you cannot use your speed for, say a quake server or something.
I believe AT&T does this.
Not that I'm a TW/AOL fan, but rr is a kick ass isp.
dude, linux is a patchwork upon patchwork of dirty hacked-together c code from 1995. BSD is a model open source citizen. While linux continues to get closer and closer to the product all linux users hate (Starts with a 'w').
Linux is for the windows convert. FreeBSD is for the unix convert.
Linux continues to copy off FreeBSD - just look at the latest VM work being done to the kernels.
I don't care whats popular - if we went by popularity, we would be saying linux was dead.
ok, you're just full of it now.
Most businesses look at FreeBSD as a sane unix OS. Linux on the other hand is almost communistic.
FreeBSD has allways been the better server OS over linux. Every single benchmark I've ever seen proves that. Sad thing is though, newbie sysadmins have this strange notion, due to posts like yours, that linux is easier to use.
FreeBSD is simply server-orientated. Just because its not the most popular doesn't mean its not better.
Let me further my point:
I mean heck, windows is more 'popular' than linux. But who gives a hoot?
(hint: whats this new vm for the linux kernel modeled after?)
And, this is especially critical in proving BSD isn't dead:
Mac OS X uses BSD. Hello! Apple choose bsd for its core, and now Apple Computer sells more copies of a unix-based OS than ANY OTHER COMPANY.
More than RED HAT.
linux is free except for one provision:
you can't take the code and do whatever you want with it. So, in effect, linux is not free. Just free of charge.
sorry dude, that just isn't true.
I agree 100% If its open sourced, it will be BSD, no doubt.

this is a prime example. the code is free as in costs nothing. but it is not liberated. And thus you have to meet requirements to use it. Pitty.
that would be 'sudo' sorry to nitpick. and I agree, use sudo whenever possible.
And that is at C. Light travles at probably .88C inside a processor.

SCREW THE NUMBERS, BSD FOR EVER!

just thought you would like to know, Solaris for intel and SPARC is free via Sun's web site.
