But I think in this case there wasn’t even really a starting point. There was some perception that “that’s how it is”, because the closed source people acted more secure, because, being business people, they were trained that way.

After all, if it’s all in our heads, it only requires some of us to always securely act how it really is: We are gaining, winning, and rolling over them in an unstoppable wave! And on top of that it tries to transport a very unhealthy agenda for a particular delusional world provider company. If it weren’t for the religious schizophrenia, it would be long forgotten.

Well, there’s always the Planck length, as as the ultimate size limitation. As there need to be some structures, it always have to be a multiple of that. But everything else depends on of we can overcome the difficulties of constructing working *tronics out of structures that small.
There is no such thing, as a general “smart”. Those people are likely very smart in their logical thinking, and very weak in their abilities to process emotions. It’s typical for smart geeks to smoke, when they got problems. Since they are not experts in processing them. Or else they would perhaps be liberal arts majors. Smoking is something that I call a “repression-helper”. Just like Prozac. (Which is used exactly where it never should be used: To repress problems that you should PROCESS, and hence to never heal from it.) Alcohol on the other hand usually makes it harder, to repress things. People can become all emotional on it.
I bet, that most people would have a much easier time, getting rid of smoking, when they would face their problems, and process them, instead of repressing them. But of course, with over 600 additives in a normal cigarette, they are as addictive as heroine. (That information is based on a study, and on the personal experience of two friends of mine.) So you still have to overcome that. Which is really *really* hard for normal people. That’s why I stopped telling people to “just get rid of it”. It’s not “just” that simple.
Also: No, smoking does not “taste great”. First of all, it does not have a taste. It has a smell. And while you may like the smell of tobacco, you wouldn’t just use the aromas like in a perfume, would you? Plus, non-addicted people don’t think it smells great. What you like, is the good feeling it gives you. You have learned that association. But of course, for non newbie smokers, you don’t get a good feeling when smoking, but you get the normal feeling back again. Because now you feel always worse without the tobacco(+additives). The problem is, that to get that feeling back as normal, you have to pay back all the good feelings you got when you started. With pain. Lots of it. (Yes, emotional pain is indistinguishable from injury pain for the human brain. No it’t de-facto real pain. [Yes, this is also true for losing a loved one.]) But most people just go even deeper into debt, just to get a better-than-the-original-normal feeling again.:/

That one was really a genius story element, making me go “OMG, yes, I remember that scene, and did not think at all, that it had such a giant meaning! How on earth can that be written in all those places??” If they can give us more of that galactic creepiness, then I’m all for it! But please add a explanation with more of a WOW-effect. Something of outer-spheres horror-epicness that only Lovecraft could have come up with.
Do not forget that an interpretation of what something looks like, comes entirely and completely out of your own mind. So if you think that dildos are bad (for whatever reason), but somehow still think about them, then maybe your should stop repressing that part of yourself. ^^
