I think it’s called the MS Bob approach.;) It’s what you get, when you mix up “elegant“, “emergent“ or “efficient” with “simple”, and listen to the loud dumb clients to make the thing useless for everyone with half a brain, while telling the intelligent critics that the dumb would not get it. Some people really think they could make more money that way...
What does the Bible have to do with reality, or history?
Also, for the quality of a story, feel-good or screwups/holes is not the question. If you take a scale of the greatness of an experience (which is a superordinate concept to feel-good vs screwups/holes), and render a graph over time, that’s what you should get, for it to be the optimal interest curve: http://navid.radiantempire.com/kb/9/65558.php
No we aren’t. But many (pretty dumb) people have the perception that we would, because they think that others would have that perception, because (1:) they said something alike, because they themselves think that others would have that perception, because... GOTO (1).
Or in other words: Monkey, see, monkey think, monkey parrot. ^^
What most people don’t know, is that it’s all in our head. Like fashion. Why did women think that wearing rubber boots with colorful flowers on them in the middle of the summer would be cool? Because “it was the fashion at the time“. And why was it that? Because some self-appointed “fashion expert” told them so. (Because he sold that stuff. But that’s another story.)
But I think in this case there wasn’t even really a starting point. There was some perception that “that’s how it is”, because the closed source people acted more secure, because, being business people, they were trained that way.
The thing is: Why would you let it just grow on us like a mind-virus, when you can change it just like that? After all, if it’s all in our heads, it only requires some of us to always securely act how it really is: We are gaining, winning, and rolling over them in an unstoppable wave! Have you ever noticed how a big mass of people switched their mind sets, and started to become a raging mob, or something like that? It’s that exact thing. It only needs a seed (you) who is so secure, that they start to doubt themselves. Then the rest is only a matter of that self-amplifying mechanism above, and time (depending on how strong your reality is).
It’s a big war of psychology and social engineering, for the minds of people. And I don’t let the politicians, mass media or greedy multinational corporations win it.:) Think like this: You’re a mind hacker. And the mind is by far the most complex computer ever. Isn’t that much cooler than doing it to such a (in comparison) ridiculously simple thing as a computer (network)?
Typical for that type of fiction. Remember Moses? It took him 40 years to walk from Egypt to the holy land. That’s what? 10 meters a day?? It would have made sense if he was stoned as hell... Euuuughhh.... *ehuhuhu*... allright, let’s get going... euuhh... how’s this working again? First the right foot... no...uum.. the left... uuum... both?... *poof* ouch! stupid stone!... euuhhh *tectonically walks along...sloooooowwlyy*...
Well, the bible has no dramatic arc, a completely chaotic interest curve, way too many characters that are usually killed off, a horribly convoluted language, and more plot holes than an unpatched IE 6 has attack vectors. It’s just all-around bad fiction. A typical popular mass media production with way too many authors and script doctors. And on top of that it tries to transport a very unhealthy agenda for a particular delusional world provider company. If it weren’t for the religious schizophrenia, it would be long forgotten.
A book that everyone calls a great classic book. But that actually is a really crappy depressive shit of a book. Just because everyone says it’s s great, everyone else parrots it on.
In fact there is no such thing as non-biased / neutral. It’s a physical impossibility for a life-form. But so is “fact”. At least in practice. Since you can’t call it a fact, until you yourself followed it all the way back from at least as low as quantum physics, with only pure and clean bug-free logic. Which is not going to happen. ^^ So don’t think that less than 99.999% of what we humans thing we know, is more than mere hearsay.
IANARCD (I am not a roller coaster designer), but I'll bet if I were I would disagree with you. A good roller coaster will take the rider through anticipation and build-up, followed by some excitement, then a few twists and turns, more build-up, more excitement, leading to a (hopefully) fulfilling conclusion.
That is not a story. That’s just an excitement curve. Something that is common for all entertainment experiences. Here is my primitive (non-auto-recursive) attempt at drawing such a graph for 3 levels: http://navid.radiantempire.com/kb/9/65558.php (With a bit of German. The Google translation makes no sense.) A story is more. Roller coaster designers would not disagree, as I have the whole concept of those parts of an experience from Jesse Schell, who used to be a roller coaster designer, and is (among other things) at the Entertainment Technology Center of the Carnegie Mellon university nowadays.
Too close? Really? It clearly says “Datel”. I’m sorry, but someone who can’t tell such an obvious difference, should not be able to survive an any evolving community anyway. (Of course in our counter-evolving communities, they can survive, because the worse parts of our society get the most “help”, thereby punishing everyone who ever achieved something or has half a brain.)
Well, there’s always the Planck length, as as the ultimate size limitation. As there need to be some structures, it always have to be a multiple of that. But everything else depends on of we can overcome the difficulties of constructing working *tronics out of structures that small.
There is no such thing, as a general “smart”. Those people are likely very smart in their logical thinking, and very weak in their abilities to process emotions. It’s typical for smart geeks to smoke, when they got problems. Since they are not experts in processing them. Or else they would perhaps be liberal arts majors. (Although those don’t seem to handle it better, since they don’t have the systematic behavior to achieve that plan.) ^^ (Warning: When I generalize, I am talking about majorities. I aware that not everyone is like that.:)
Smoking is something that I call a “repression-helper”. Just like Prozac. (Which is used exactly where it never should be used: To repress problems that you should PROCESS, and hence to never heal from it.) Alcohol on the other hand usually makes it harder, to repress things. People can become all emotional on it.
I bet, that most people would have a much easier time, getting rid of smoking, when they would face their problems, and process them, instead of repressing them. But of course, with over 600 additives in a normal cigarette, they are as addictive as heroine. (That information is based on a study, and on the personal experience of two friends of mine.) So you still have to overcome that. Which is really *really* hard for normal people. That’s why I stopped telling people to “just get rid of it”. It’s not “just” that simple.
Also: No, smoking does not “taste great”. First of all, it does not have a taste. It has a smell. And while you may like the smell of tobacco, you wouldn’t just use the aromas like in a perfume, would you? Plus, non-addicted people don’t think it smells great. What you like, is the good feeling it gives you. You have learned that association. But of course, for non newbie smokers, you don’t get a good feeling when smoking, but you get the normal feeling back again. Because now you feel always worse without the tobacco(+additives). The problem is, that to get that feeling back as normal, you have to pay back all the good feelings you got when you started. With pain. Lots of it. (Yes, emotional pain is indistinguishable from injury pain for the human brain. No it’t de-facto real pain. [Yes, this is also true for losing a loved one.]) But most people just go even deeper into debt, just to get a better-than-the-original-normal feeling again.:/
Do you even know how much energy a laser would need, to become a bright light for a whole area, coming from *space*?? Please, do the calculations, and tell some scientists of what you came up with. Also, if you do the calculations for the price, you already got something to pitch to country leaders. Maybe they see it as useful. If not, you can always tell that to their population. ^^
I replied that countries could easily opt out
I’m sorry, but you have to be pretty arrogant and egocentric, to make this opt OUT instead of opt IN like it should be. Opt OUT, just like imperialism, am I right? (Yes, I know your good intentions. It’s just very far from being polite. Be polite and humble, and you achieve more.)
Reflective tubes and fitting collectors are known for decades now! Nothing new about it. Remember that Dilbert house some years ago? Yeah, that one had them too. It’s useless beyond passing one roof and one floor. But if that fits, it’s really great for places where you can’t use windows. Especially if the windows are on the sides, while the roof is above you. But if the roof is right above you, of course a simple window makes more sense. ^^
Uuum, we all know The Three Stooges. You sound like that woman we met in the US, that was very surprised to hear, that we really do watch American movies, know who Marylin Monroe was, and *gasp* even dub it with professional speakers* in our native language. (* Fun fact: In Poland, it’s singular: Speaker. One speaker. Usually an old guy with only a single vocal style. ^^)
HTML also seems not to be your language... Or are you Xzibit, and wanted to “put that opening tag in that opening tag, so yo can emphasize while yo emphasize”?
That would explain why English is not your first language, though... ^^
Bullshit. Do you really think they can read out that data? Toyota reads out that data. Or “authorized repair shops”. I bet the data shows very well, what’s the real problem. But Toyota doesn’t want to admit it, or they will be in big trouble.
No it isn’t. Your problem is just, that you are socially conditioned to think that when you like something that has some imagination and fun with craziness in it, that that would be “childish”.
Well, it’s not. It’s just the behavior of people who aren’t as square and stiff as you, and live their life!
Maybe it’s time to invent some new, better recurring villains. I mean those old villains were written in a time where we did know much less about the universe. I’m sure we could come up with something new, and then do it right from the start.
Seconded. Although they showed a bit too much preview material at the end. But the premise with the cracks in the universe sounded very interesting. You know, a bit like that iconic “Bad Wulf” meme, that you later noticed was visible everywhere, starting many many episodes ago. That one was really a genius story element, making me go “OMG, yes, I remember that scene, and did not think at all, that it had such a giant meaning! How on earth can that be written in all those places??” If they can give us more of that galactic creepiness, then I’m all for it! But please add a explanation with more of a WOW-effect. Something of outer-spheres horror-epicness that only Lovecraft could have come up with.
Do not forget that an interpretation of what something looks like, comes entirely and completely out of your own mind. So if you think that dildos are bad (for whatever reason), but somehow still think about them, then maybe your should stop repressing that part of yourself. ^^
Maybe there is a need for a Plexiglas dildo for that acehole.;)
I think it’s called the MS Bob approach. ;)

Whoops, the labels of the axes are mixed up. The horizontal one is time, and the vertical one is interest.
What does the Bible have to do with reality, or history?

I rated the “WhatApp?” wiki as really crappy and unable to overcome a singular bias towards the opinion of the most powerful entities. ;)
Exactly. They should get slaughtered, no matter which religion they’re infected with! ;)

Sometimes, that old perception is just wrong.
