  1. Re:Start with Venus... on How Close Are We To Engineering the Climate? · · Score: 1

I don't expect Venus is an easy subject but that's exactly where my mind wanders. Why CAN'T we terraform Venus in the way that Red/Blue/Green saw happening to Mars (from a drastically different starting point)?

  2. But we've emitted more carbon! on Fixing China's Greenhouse Gas Emissions For Them · · Score: 2

I don't understand Krugman (who I respect) saying... "United States accounts for only 17 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, while China accounts for 27 percent — and China’s share is rising fast." ...when per-capita we're emitting far more than them. Not even counting historical carbon, emitted so that we could build roads and infrastructure then even total carbon emissions still dwarf China. If we're not AT LEAST recognizing that we emit WAY more GHG more per-capita TODAY, then this is... this is terrible coming from Krugman. http://data.worldbank.org/indi...

  3. Pu-238 is in short supply BECAUSE... on New Small Fission Reactor For Deep-space Missions Demonstrated · · Score: 1

...the Pu-238 contained within USA's existing U-233 stockpile is being destroyed along with it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p49Sq7mbpE

Also, the U-233 could serve as a "nuclear catalyst" in Molten Salt Reactors fed Thorium as fuel. Such reactors could produce Pu-238 in an easily partition-able form since they would be in a liquid state, and there would be no unwanted isotopes to contaminate the plutonium. (Isotopes being harder to separate than other elements.)

If you live in the USA please consider dropping your email in here... http://thoriumpetition.com/

...and you'll be notified when the next petition is launched. Last petition hit ~2500 sigs so there's a ways to go, but by building up the email list should ultimately get there.

  4. Re:Lots of work? on RockBox + Refurbished MP3 Players = Crowdsourced Audio Capture · · Score: 3, Informative

Have used PluralEyes but find not much harder to sync manually. Make 3 loud clapping sounds once recorders are all running, manually sync to that in timeline. The vast majority of the audio can't be put in sync manually because the audio is so different for each perspective (for 5 hours) compared to the 3 seconds where identical clapping can be heard. Ideally the devices are all activated & running (then you clap 3x) before the event starts, and deployed as needed. As opposed to starting them as they are deployed to collars.

Sorry for this crazy-stupid question, but how does one up-vote in slashdot? I'm logged in, but I only see filtering mechanisms, I can't find any voting mechanisms.

I've been on Slashdot for YEARS, and I guess I better finally come clean on this. I have no idea how to upvote, even though every year or so I'll take another stab at it.

  6. Green Party's Elizabeth May on The Pirate Party on Pirate Party Coming To Canada · · Score: 3, Insightful

Between CBC's coverage of Canadian Pirate Party and this slashdot post, I had a chance to ask Elizabeth May about the idea of a Canadian Pirate Party.

    http://r4nt.com/article/green-party-vs-pirate-party/

She says Green Party policy is copyrights should expire in 12 years (as opposed to Canada's effective 100 year copyright durations).

I know the Green Party doesn't push this aspect of their platform very hard, but it would be nice to have an elected MP speaking on economically optimal copyright durations, as opposed to what is "right" or "wrong" with downloading MP3s (yawn).

YouTube video of Elizabeth May on The Pirate Party and Copyright. Also recycleable (and CC licensed) at Internet Archive.

If The Pirate Party runs against Greens, then copyleft voters will have their vote split. Given Canada's first-past-the-post system, that guarantees we'll never have an elected MP pushing for shorter copyright duration.

  7. WATCHMAN READER vs NEWBIE review on Watchmen Watched · · Score: 3, Insightful

I've read it but asked a friend who hadn't read WATCHMEN to see the movie with me so we could review it. Our discussion is the video at the end of this review (the review focuses more on Alan Moore not wanting to see the movie than our different experiences watching it). http://r4nt.com/article/watchmen-the-what-is-alans-problem-review/ ...and the video itself can be found at either location (use blip for CC license)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY7fCCmUxs8 http://blip.tv/file/1844574/ In a nutshell he never read it, but he is a comic geek, and he loved it and is seeing it again today. I HAD read the comic but don't consider myself a comic guy. I also loved it. Certainly the most interesting Alan Moore adaptation yet. In terms of quality, to ME its the best, followed by FFROM HELL and V FOR VENDETTA. He was never confused during the screening, and never felt anything was missing. Nor did I. Obviously stuff IS missing, and a longer version is coming. But it stands on its own as an excellent movie.

  8. Re:Correct | CowboyNeal/Slashdot should update on MGM's DVD Class Action Settlement · · Score: 1

I've just wasted a bit of time looking thru my DVD collection before spotting later posts (such as this one) which point out the films are really not "butchered".

Would be best if someone could update the original post to indicate these movies are not being trimmed on all 4 sides, and are "artistically accurate".

  9. How to implement? on Advertising on a Free Wireless Network? · · Score: 1

It sounds like a very interesting idea to me, but how do you implement the frame? Is there an example ISP who frames what you're browsing? I believe typical implementation of such ad-based approaches involve customized browsers. That would be a pain in the ass to enforce, and restrict user choices. -g
