  1. Who needs to buy a new computer every year...? on PC Shipments Hit the Lowest Level In a Decade (cnbc.com) · · Score: 1

I bought a seriously good PC from Dell, about 5 years ago, for my wife's bookkeeping business. Also got one of their 27" widescreen monitors at the same time, so put a reasonable graphics card in the PC, and increased the RAM to the max at the time (24GB). Hard drives are standard spinning drives, but really large, and with some redundancy factor as it also contains a RAID card and an extra drive for backup.

She's still happier than hell with it. Lots of serious horsepower (accounting programs and large spreadsheets is what she works with) to handle anything. Fantastic "no tired eyes" screen resolution back then, and still a good performer now.

What is a newer computer going to give us that we don't have now?

Anyone remember Yggdrasil? Beautiful CD with graphical installation. I think it came with a boot floppy (maybe two), and a CD. Don't remember too much about the installation, because it was about 1993/4 when I first started with this, but I can remember the first time I read "kernel panic". My brother and I, who shared my fascination with linux, sat there and laughed when we read that. After reading the thick book that accompanied the installation software, we figured out what was wrong, and started again. Finally got everything installed and running, and then we were hooked.

Thanks to all the developers along the way, who have kept this hobby interesting for me.

While this is simple with clickable imagemaps, its not possible with flash adbanners (at least with mozilla's builtins....).

People can be real idiots. I'm sure the person who wrote this book, and the person who wrote the review, used software supplied by our friends from Microsoft. So I wonder what the markup on MS software is? Prolly a _lot_ more. Why aren't they complaining about that, and providing 15 easy steps to saving $$$$$ with computer software? I'm in the housing construction industry, and I don't see too many "fat-cats" around me. Most people make enough to provide for themselves and their families, but they're definitely not living in half million dollar homes. And I might add, the products they turn out with their daily work, generally aren't the cause of great frustration, without needing an monthly or yearly upgrade, etc, etc... This book is a variation of those "Get Rich While Sitting in Your Lawnchair Surrounded by Beautiful Babes" type books. The only people who benefit from this sort of book is the author and publishing company. Now that I've gotten rid of some steam, I'm going back to work :-)
