I bought a seriously good PC from Dell, about 5 years ago, for my wife's bookkeeping business. Also got one of their 27" widescreen monitors at the same time, so put a reasonable graphics card in the PC, and increased the RAM to the max at the time (24GB). Hard drives are standard spinning drives, but really large, and with some redundancy factor as it also contains a RAID card and an extra drive for backup.
She's still happier than hell with it. Lots of serious horsepower (accounting programs and large spreadsheets is what she works with) to handle anything. Fantastic "no tired eyes" screen resolution back then, and still a good performer now.
What is a newer computer going to give us that we don't have now?
The fact is that this is a treaty that hasn't been approved by 2/3 of the US senate. By that alone it should be invalid but the stupid "treaty on treaties" made us less sovern.
"sovern" - I don't know about the education level of slashdot readers anymore - they vote this post as "informative" when this idiot doesn't even know how to spell, or use a spell-checker? Although in their defense, they did only scored it a "2"
There are some obvious flaws to this design. But baby steps, baby steps. I saw the example of going down concrete stairs; but what of going up wooden stairs?
No problem - it'll just jump up them - 4 feet at a time.
I've got W7 Ultimate - MSE has worked for me since I installed it. And the upgrade also works, never any nags about some issue or other. You might have something else that's stopping the trouble-free installation of this update.
OK, I understand the bus analogy, but I would understand your argument more (and better), if you used a car analogy, like we're used to here on Slashdot.
Anyone remember Yggdrasil? Beautiful CD with graphical installation. I think it came with a boot floppy (maybe two), and a CD. Don't remember too much about the installation, because it was about 1993/4 when I first started with this, but I can remember the first time I read "kernel panic". My brother and I, who shared my fascination with linux, sat there and laughed when we read that. After reading the thick book that accompanied the installation software, we figured out what was wrong, and started again. Finally got everything installed and running, and then we were hooked.
Thanks to all the developers along the way, who have kept this hobby interesting for me.
That settles it - I'm moving to Holland and I'm going to start paying taxes. There have to be people like me there, paying taxes to keep that great country running.
During that time, Nan-in and Tenno went out occasionally for lunch, usually to a street food vendor who was along their route.
One day, Tenno ordered a hamburger with the works, then stood back, and waited for Nan-in to place his order. Nan-in looked at the menu of choices available, then pointed at what he wanted, and said, "Make me one with everything".
After that, Tenno decided to extend his apprenticeship under the master for the next 25 years, as he realized he was just a dumb shit who still had a lot to learn
If you're reading this, thanks -- I've got a question about a topic that has been bothering me for a while. With Mozilla, if you see adbanners on a page, you can right-click on them, and then scroll down to "Block Images from this Server" and presto, no more ads. While this is simple with clickable imagemaps, its not possible with flash adbanners (at least with mozilla's builtins....).
Does anyone have any commnets/opinions or hints on how to "disappear" the flash adbanners?
woody:~#apt-cache search sloccount sloccount - Programs for counting physical source lines of code (SLOC)...so it appears theres a *.deb of it already (or is this an old story...) Hmmm... you be the judge.
...explaining the game of soccer (football) to the unenlightened: Its a game were two teams kick a ball around, and after 90 minutes, the German team wins...:-)
Now we'll have to come up with an analogy that uses the Brasilian team (ie: they've won 5 world cups now, I think...)

People can be real idiots. I'm sure the person who wrote this book, and the person who wrote the review, used software supplied by our friends from Microsoft. So I wonder what the markup on MS software is? Prolly a _lot_ more. Why aren't they complaining about that, and providing 15 easy steps to saving $$$$$ with computer software?
I'm in the housing construction industry, and I don't see too many "fat-cats" around me. Most people make enough to provide for themselves and their families, but they're definitely not living in half million dollar homes. And I might add, the products they turn out with their daily work, generally aren't the cause of great frustration, without needing an monthly or yearly upgrade, etc, etc...
This book is a variation of those "Get Rich While Sitting in Your Lawnchair Surrounded by Beautiful Babes" type books. The only people who benefit from this sort of book is the author and publishing company.
Now that I've gotten rid of some steam, I'm going back to work:-)
I'm not a bandstander for Dell, but in all fairness, I've been using an Inspiron 8000 with Debian unstable on it, for over a year, and everything works just fine, ie: IRDA, apm, firewire, PCMCIA, usb, etc...
I don't know what problems you're having - your link doesn't work for me, prolly an overloaded server, heh:-) but I'll have to disagree with you on this one.

As someone who has had a colonoscopy done, I for one, welcome our new "pushing into new spaces" overlords.

Hey, to paraphrase a famous politician, "If you're not with us (and our spending habits), then you're against us (you terrorist)".
This is a dead parrot. ....
No its not.
Yes, it is.
No, its not.
Let me correct that for you:
I think that would mean that RMS pwns pmars.
How can a person do a right click? My Macbook only has one mouse button. Steve has determined that one button is sufficient.
