But honestly, as much as I have enjoyed chatting with him at cons, and his non-fiction writing...he hasn't written a SF book in 20 years that I could finish. I'm not knocking his prose, it is just his style has changed and I just can't get into it. I puts him in the same catagory as Joan Vinge and early Asimov novels.

We don't know what the real top speed of the SR-71 Blackbird is...every time someone else brakes the air speed record, they take the Blackbird up and break them. One record was 2,193.17 MPH, and it can go up to a sustained horizontal altitude of 85,069 feet. It gets so high that the atmosphere is so thin that it needs attitutude rockets. It's published theoretical top is 88,000 feet. It's exact specs are still top secret. All the speed records are for sustained speed...we have not seen published data on any burst speed.

I do see one notice of an attempt last year to put an aerospike engine on a SR-71...I don't have any data on what happened there...but the work was done by NASA.

It is a fine bird, and even today, we don't have anything that can replace it.

  12. We need our Myths on David Brin Responds to Star Wars Issues · · Score: 1

One of the major problems with today's society is that we no longer have real heros. The Human race is always inspired to achieve higher goals by seeing that which is greater than it is. The dbasing of heros has hurt our general society. Luckily, in the Free Software Movement/Open Source Movement, we do have heros. We have people who aspire to higher ideals than those of the general populace, people who will fight for those ideals. Names like Richard Stallman, Linus Torvolds, Eric Raymond, Larry Wall...and the list goes on.

This is part of the reason why our society is ascendant. We have heros to inspire us.
