Except until recently, Ireland was *not* part of the "English" speaking world. But the English tried to kill the Gaelic World by shipping off any people who protested, and then killed off many other Gaelic speakers by percipitating the Potato Famine.
it is a publicity stunt...Think on it...The Pepsi Points contest is long gone, but a few stories for the cost of their lawyers and the guys' lawyers, mere pittance to Pepsi, can get them international coverage.
Gods, yes! David Gerrold wrote some good stuff back then. But honestly, as much as I have enjoyed chatting with him at cons, and his non-fiction writing...he hasn't written a SF book in 20 years that I could finish. I'm not knocking his prose, it is just his style has changed and I just can't get into it. I puts him in the same catagory as Joan Vinge and early Asimov novels.
A number of TRON cast members went onto work on Babylon-5...TRON was played by Bruce Boxleitner, who also played John Sheriden. Peter Jurasik, Londo Mollari...and knowing the Pixar people (And animators in general), there would bound to be many B-5 References, injokes in a remake of TRON...Let's go de-rez some Shadows!
I wouldn't say that is "Tenent Favouring Law", I would say that is standard contract law. I mean, if the fool landlord is stupid enough to cash the check...DOH!
We don't know what the real top speed of the SR-71 Blackbird is...every time someone else brakes the air speed record, they take the Blackbird up and break them. One record was 2,193.17 MPH, and it can go up to a sustained horizontal altitude of 85,069 feet. It gets so high that the atmosphere is so thin that it needs attitutude rockets. It's published theoretical top is 88,000 feet. It's exact specs are still top secret. All the speed records are for sustained speed...we have not seen published data on any burst speed.
I do see one notice of an attempt last year to put an aerospike engine on a SR-71...I don't have any data on what happened there...but the work was done by NASA.
It is a fine bird, and even today, we don't have anything that can replace it.
General society has a lack of Heros, it is the Free/Open Source software community that has heros. The average Joe/Jane on the street has no idea why say, RMS is important. Because this small community has heros to inspire us, we are doing good things.
One of the major problems with today's society is that we no longer have real heros. The Human race is always inspired to achieve higher goals by seeing that which is greater than it is. The dbasing of heros has hurt our general society. Luckily, in the Free Software Movement/Open Source Movement, we do have heros. We have people who aspire to higher ideals than those of the general populace, people who will fight for those ideals. Names like Richard Stallman, Linus Torvolds, Eric Raymond, Larry Wall...and the list goes on.
This is part of the reason why our society is ascendant. We have heros to inspire us.
Acutally, The Woz didn't design the drive, he used an off-the-shelf drive...but custom circuits and controller was his. And the IWM is actually know as the "Infernal Wozniak Machine"
He also used a "unique" way to get the drive to find track 0 to read the boot code...since they had 33 tracks, they backed up the stepper motor 33 times to make sure it was a track 0, no matter where the drive head was! That is what what gave the Apple ]['s their distinctive sound upon booting.

I soldered it together myself...built it part by part as I could afford it...completely socketed, no direct soldering of chips. I remember doing 3d wireframe graphics using GraForth, and writing a turtle graphics package for it that imiated the LOGO command set.
This Samhain, I will remember DeForest Kelly. How many people did he inspire to go into medical practice? Many. And that is the *minium* that he gave to this planet...How many hours of joy? How many deep thoughts? How many smiles?
Too many to count.

Overlooking the gratutitous use of FNORDs, an excellent post! One other luminary that may have some bearing on this is Richard Bandler, who is one of the co-inventors of NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming. In fact, Bandler and Wilson are doing a series of talks together...
Far too much, our language defines how we understand things, something that is well explored in Neal Stephenson's Snowcrash, and Robert Anton Wilson's works.
Let's find the email addresses of every member and fuctionary of their parliament and send them porn. Let's find every law official and send them porn, let's find everyone and anyone who would be involved with this stupid law and send them porn...let's make their filtering software overload, make their email system useless, and make sure to put in a message about how important free speech is on the Internet.
I've known Andrew Hutton for years, and he is one of the main people behind Achilles Internet, one of the best ISPs in Ottawa. He also does a great deal to help community groups by giving free accounts to them. Finally, a Linux event I didn't plan (see above URL) that is close to me!
Today, standards are a way similar to patents that companies are using to compete. I am not all that hot on Standards.
But what I think is important is Consensus...this is what standards were originally about. If we can get consesus about things, great. What we don't need is another "standard".
Yes, but the real question is...Does the Goddess prefer Linux or Windows? Linux, I am sure...Blessed Be the Goddess Eris, Matron of Chaos and Computer!
I think that Cray has missed a major income source...T-shirts, mugs, hats...I would *love* to have a Cray t-shirt, a hat, mug...anything!

I know that many, many here are sympathetic at very least to The Word of Eris. She is the Matron Diety of alt.sysadmin.recovery.
One of my personal mottos goes:
"Out of the Chaos of Today come solutions for Tomorrow"
Thus She is the Fount of Creativity.
Information Theory tells us the more Chaos there is in a system, the more information there is in it.
Thus she is the Lady of Knowledge.
Hail Eris! All Hail Disccordia! KALLISTI!
Her Humble Servant,
