  1. for insanely fast launches use solar flares on Going To Space Inside Magnetic Bubbles · · Score: 2

I wonder if you could slingshot around the earth towards the sun, and fire up this sucker near a solar flare to see how far it would shoot you out of the solar system. The force on your magnetic field would be insane which would either kill you or propel you like mad out of the solar system. Suddently this makes lots of things in the solar system managable. Think robots dispatched into space to latch onto asteroids and propel them to near earth orbit (dangerous terrorist weapon OR raw material mining?), because most asteroids are further off you could slingshot an asteroid around a planet with one of these and send it back towards earth or keep it in orbit around the moon. The scifi implications of this stuff will keep people thinking for years to come.

  2. how about a minimal solar sail that acts like fins on Going To Space Inside Magnetic Bubbles · · Score: 1

How about using a minimal solar sail that acts like fins to guide the spacecraft in a general direction? Also I wonder if they can concentrate the plasma they inject into the magnetic field to be more concentrate on one side or the other of the magnetic field to aid in navigation or perhaps have it so concentrate on the side facing away from the sun along with a solar sail arm on the spacecraft reflecting the solar wind to propel it forward TOWARDS the sun.

  3. where would you drift? heliosynchronous orbits on Going To Space Inside Magnetic Bubbles · · Score: 1

if you just turned it on and let yourself drift, youd go out of the solar system and run up against the next star which would push you back the other direction so youd go in a third direction and eventually wind up in a static void from the magnetic fields between stars. Sounds like a great place to put equipment for either monitering any objects entering the solar system or interstellar communications. a sort of heliosynchronous orbit in our local group.

  4. That kid's movie Explorers on Going To Space Inside Magnetic Bubbles · · Score: 1

Hey maybe thats what they used in that movie i watched when i was little called Explorers ;)
    Who wouldve thought?

  5. thats been my argument against alien signals on Going To Space Inside Magnetic Bubbles · · Score: 1

i know this is offtopic but perhaps one of the reasons we dont get any radio communication drifting in from alien telivision is because our stupid sun's magnetosphere blocks it all out. I know we scan the microwave channels too because theres little noise but think about it, we use microwaves for point to point communications because its more accurate, why dont we assume the same of them? As a civilization gets more into technology they begin pressing up against fundamental laws of physics which mold their technology. So eventually all of our technology should be the very close to the same.

  6. RULE NUMBER ONE OF GIVING AWAY STUFF on Digital Convergence In Violation Of Postal Regs? · · Score: 1

  7. THE OLYMPICS IS DYING slowly on IOC To Olympic Athletes: Online Diaries Verboten · · Score: 2

Too much commercialization and the inevitable and eventual use of genetic therapy to say put cheeta muscles in humans or what not so they can run faster is going to result in the ultimate demise of the olympics which is already a freak show because all it does is exploit genetic advantages existing people already have. There is also no way to test for genetic alterations and if there is there will be ways around them, which only means that these olympiads will just be made of more and more different parts of different animals and such on the inside to improve performance in every aspect of their particular sport but still resemble humans so that they can trick the testing. Inevitably every sports game turns into a technology race.

  8. Our entire orbit will be colonized on KEO Time Capsule To Remain In Orbit 'Til 52001 AD · · Score: 1

Seriously, think about it, how whacked, by that time earth's orbit should be completely colonized with spacecraft highways taking people all over to different parts of the space station. Any probe would be creamed. What will probably happen is they will build a museum around it synchronized with its orbit so people can come in and ohh and ahh over the 21st century wonder sealed in a glass box with an even cleaner vacuum inside still traveling at the same speed with anti-theft devices all over it. I was originally thinking this is how we're going to preserve the historical aspect of our voyager space probes, moon and mars shit as well. Considering whenever they invent a decent velocity form of space travel we'll fly out voyager, point at it and say, look at the flying piece of fecal matter.

  9. Space-time evolution & Geology metaphor on Gravity Diluted By Multiple Dimensions? · · Score: 1

All this thought about folded space and parallel worlds makes me wonder. Could there be something larger that our galaxies are evolving out of? Maybe theres this whole space-time matrix, i know it sounds very sci-fi but if you look at the maps they currently have of the universe you see a pattern where theres all these strings of galaxies like mountain ranges and huge voids of nearly empty (as far as we know) space between them. Could this be like the ocean where there are huge empty areas and islands strung across the planet in stretches? But if you think about it islands are really just mountains on the ocean floor reaching the surface. Perhaps theres some huge multidimensional surface beneath us we just dont happen to see it because we're on the top just as it tooks plate techtonics and ocean floor mapping to truely understand the geology of islands and their creation.

  10. WHATS UP EFNET #EMU on Saving Our Video Game Heritage · · Score: 1

Its da CiXeL, yea you remember me from the hardcore old school emu days back when nesticle was considered revolutionary. I just want to wish all of you a lele and a tata for mooglezz, and say hi to everyone out there, all nostalgic from back when sardu was king of the hill and when mindrape stole the source code. The history of emulaiton and shit, anyways im just rambling and wanted to say hi to #emu so lates.

  11. ITS CALLED SMOG!! on Cities Influence Their Own Weather · · Score: 1

  13. Re:Napster helping the new musicians? on Napster Wars · · Score: 1

Hell yeah it is, definately in the rave scene/electronic music scene. Its soooo cool when i start seeing local djs i know and love having mp3s of mixes they released being traded all over the place. Paulina taylor a local dj has about 2 pages of people having his remix of shooting star. Maybe in other forms of music its not beneficial but certainly in the electronic music scene.

  14. The Coming Anarchy on The Death Of Intellectual Property · · Score: 1

Don't worry, in time EVERYTHING will be made illegal as seems to be the trend, when that happens there will be a backlash and people just wont care anymore and the anarchy that is the internet will catch like wildfire in the real world and the common rule will be that you can do whatever you want as long as it doesnt physically injure another individual. At long last its finally here.

  15. Mob Rule 0wns on The MP3 Troubles Continue · · Score: 1

Villiage mob gov't style rule is the natural way of governing and justice. The internet rides completely on this mob rule. Bad = whatever the public thinks is bad at the time and Good = whatever the publics best interest is. This is the way it has been, this is the way it should stay. This is the way its always meant to be but people with money and power try to take it away. I lub anarchy.

  16. I completely agree, Plus: Rave Scene + MP3 = DEATH on The MP3 Troubles Continue · · Score: 1

As was I, I used to be on when napster had at most 200 people online at a time and we celebrated when it broke 200 in #lobby. I remember when we used to be able to chat with napster and the incredible contravercy surrounding the swear filter before they started chopping it all up into multiple channels. And just like you say theres alot of songs obscure songs as well that had it not been for napster i would never have found and kept a copy of. When everything gets the same people being to differentiate and thats what im doing now. Now im into the rave scene with trance and happy hardcore and lots of those songs are difficult to get on anything other than vinyl which makes napster imperative. New forms of music will now be born and popularized through mediums like these where people can gather together enmasse to help them grow and promote the djs. Just like the 'great age of telivision' has passed so will the 'great age of music' now as it assumes different more personal role.

How is Jay Stile able to host porn and scat on his site without it getting shut down? Does he hide it on a obscure server in russia or what? On another note why hasnt anyone come up with something the equivelant of fidonet or wwivnet in a style like freenet where you could pull documents (compressed websites packages in tgz even) anonymously over email or whatnot from obscure servers hosted off inexpensive machines (386 or 486). Itd be an incredibly lengthy information exchange but it would work on VERY cheap hardware (practically free) it would allow free speech to enter very restricted countries and be very difficult to censor. Ok, thats just my wishlist.

  23. LINUS WAS RIGHT! on U.S. Wants Large Cyberpolicing Powers · · Score: 1

Linus totally hit the nail on the head when he said society is doomed to endless cycles of construction and deconstruction. All societies are competing for control of the world so naturally someone comes out on top eventually. It goes into a hitler-eske stage rebellion mode kicks in and society rebuilds itself. The only problem is that the more control the govt has during the time of economic prosperity and success before the crash, the longer it takes to rebuild.

  24. Its about conformity and its beginning to change! on AOL + Time-Warner Worse Than Microsoft? · · Score: 2

For decades the conservative standard was conformity, everyone wanted to be in some sort of group to feel accepted. Now people are beginning to expand the little niche ideas and interests they have on the side and delve into them further by finding interest groups online or otherwise and going further with them. Its alot like that excellent Yahoo commercial where the punk guy is sewing and his friends laugh at him so he finds people online who share his interests (in this case a club of incredibly hot looking women) and he goes further with his interests. Eventually humanity and social interests will get more and more complex and differentiated, its rooted in entropy. Niche interests like carnivorous plants, odd pets, etc are booming as well as simultaneously niche interests like scat or pedo are booming as well. But we gotta take the bad with the good. And yes, people ARE leaving AOL as soon as they learn the basics and want decent faster net access so just like a blackhole, AOL will dissolve eventually even if it takes a long time. Its such the Disneyland of the internet that things WILL change, its just a matter of time.
