I totally agree with you. It seems slashdot is for advocating taxing the net apparently because someone against internet taxes is getting moderated down while anyone for internet taxes is getting moderated up. Maybe robs in bed with the gov't now.
This may be a bit offtopic but what did they do when russian satellites fell out of the sky and they wanted to cover the whole thing up so they could confiscate and analyze the technology? They sent out lots of government employed crazy UFO people to just generally screw up communication and make the people with a legitimate argument look crazy themselves so the whole thing would disappear and they could get back to work. I think this same sorta thing is beginning to happen on slashdot.We're all sure the government knows that geeks are typically a rebellious bunch saying the government should go fuck itself at every possible opportunity. So as ridiculous as it sounds could some of these trolls or flamebait be government hired to discredit us? You have to expect this sort of thing from any mass meeting of like minded people after seeing those fbi files of pollitical groups theyve released more recently. At DEFCON its called 'spot the fed', there are definately feds amongst us, im not sure i can trust slashdot even anymore with the fact that some of the headlines now seem almost as though 'giving in' to the governments bullshit. ie. its not a matter of if taxes, just when taxes,etc. next itll be inevitable censorship. All these demotivational statements and people start to believe its inevitable and stop fighting the cause. We need to learn to dodge and jump around anything they can throw at us regarding taxes legislation, we need to pinch off the tendrils (in the form of taxes) feeding this parasite on our backs called the government. Starve this leach. Call me a freedom fighter sarcastically or whatever, but i believe in my rights and I will *DIE* for my rights, so government go fuck yourself and die.
Is this combined effort that makes information appear as a living entity enough that it even reacts to stimulus like censorship demonstrate that a consciousness is perhaps slowly and subtly arising from the complex interaction of people's decisions on the internet? Lets say we all copy a particular file or all rush to a specific sight posted and slashdot it all to hell, arent we acting like a larger organism with group thought such as a school of fish or a coral reef? The question remains though is as technology becomes more complex will we begin to see EVEN MORE characteristics arise out of this? This could be the start of something very VERY big.

Has anyone considered the concept of rebuilding the BBS days over a protocol like freenet, no browsers are built for freenet yet and i wonder if itd be possible to piggyback anonymous bbses over it.
yeah and did u know that with the alaskan oil spill valdez that the beaches that were steam cleaned still havent recovered to this day whereas many of the beaches that werent have alrady recovered? Its because when you steam clean them you cook all the critters living in niches in the rocks and bacteria. Nature is used to the occasional small scale oil spill because oil does leak out of the ocean floor naturally, nature is NOT used to being cooked with jets of boiling water except for the occasional volcano which is exceedingly rare.

Chipping away at the first and second amendments until its like the book animal farm and the laws mean only what the elite feels they should mean. Fuck the government! If we were to time travel from midway through the 80s to this month we would see exactly what the government is doing. This is undeniably moving towards a dictatorship, scary, very scary. I wonder in how many decades it will take for things to come to a head.

all i can say is that everytime i go to a rave a particular song played sticks in my head for like 3 days until i get the mp3 of napster and play it out. Of course, the problem is that it never quite matches how it sounded on E until you hear it on E again.

First of all the education system is so fuxored as it is we should be starving it like we did NASA for years to force and induce growth. Systems always get screwed up when they contain inflexible close-minded people or where money lies like the medical industry. Times are changing though, in the computer industry you need talent not the want of money to succeed, this is demonstrated by how many kids think microsoft certification will mean a easy buck and they're being rejected like mad because they have no experience. I see many industries shifting toward this in the future. We should be starving schools not giving them MORE money. We throw money at schools and get jack back. or perhaps isnt this the way the govt wants it to be? all the more stupid people who cannot question authority.
No, better than mailing your deaf congresspeople, form localized grassroots slashdot groups. Anywhere theres a tech sector or group of geeks who dont want to see their rights raped from them by the feds. I'm suprised that the only group thats even tried this is 2600.
Im suprised the govt doent welcome microsoft with open arms as compared to OSS. If the gov't wanted to they could force ole billy to put gov't eavesdropping bugs in software to filter and forward dangerous content written in ms word and such under the pretenses of 'microsoft update'. OSS it the gov't's worst enemy in terms of things because they cant control it and the program's bowel's are split wide open for all the world to see and screen.
i already use a boot disk instead of LILO to access my linux partition, how would i make it so my system uses some sort of secure bootdisk that if not in the drive would automatically corrupt all my data beyond recovery?
