exactly, the link to the star trek theme was supposed to show how unusable it is..to most of us.. but the guy who designed it.. it might be the simplest thing to use.. and the normal interface that comes most apps might have been hard. No one should be forced into one "skin" for the sake of compatibility.. every program that is shipped should come with a default.. "looks and feels like your os" UI. but should allow u to change it if you want. I for one hate the normal skin of winamp. hence i use the AlpineAmp skin. in Gnome I trashed all the default panels and made my own to suit me. something I'm comfortable with. and I thank the creators for giving me the choice. I am not forcing anyone to use my skin/theme.. most people would hate my theme. but it does what i want it to. and thats what counts.
but imagine a world in which stray gunfire wasn't as abundant.. or crime wasn't so high. There wouldn't be a need for Big Brother to spy on you People fail to realize.. or atleast deny this.
Big brother spying on us is not neccesarily bad.. if you don't do anything wrong then u have nothing to hide, if u do something wrong.. then u obviously should not be doing it. Big brother is spying on me, but Big brother is also spying on Joe Terrorist.. just as you say the threat of big brother is.. The terroristic threat is also just as real. Just because you don't hear about it in America as often doesn't mean that the govt is not stopping some guy from making a bomb... sure sometimes the govt does screw up and get the wrong guy.. we need to make the process better. but to ask Big brother to go away, or to think of it as the most evil thing since Satan himself.. is foolish.
Big Brother is watching us, but he has also saved us countless times and we don't know about it. If Big Brother was to talk about every thing they stopped we'd never hear the end of it.
If you want privacy tools then sure.. use them. If there is a certain email that you don't want anyone else to be able to read go ahead encrypt it with 4096 bit encryption.. but how do u secure it once it reaches the recipient and he opens it up and leaves it open and goes for a cup of coffee ? or saves the decrypted copy on his computer ? Remember that thing that can read signals from your monitor ? Big Brother can use those..
Also do you really think that you are the only person the govt is governing ? there well over 200 million people in the USA alone. Now if u lead a pretty normal life and don't associate yourself with known terrorists/criminals.. the govt may have info on you.. but it will never look for it.. no reason to. I'm all for privacy and all and I too would like to be able to keep my secrets well secrets.. but as long as their are terrorists and screw balls who can't obey the law.. then I see the need for big brother to look out. It's a fact of life.. i can't change it. I'd rather let big brother be able to check my private email if it also enables them to check the private email of Joe Terrorist who is planning to hijack the plane that i'm about to take, or bomb my office building.. (unless of course he does it when i'm not in the office.. then by all means.. blow it up:)).
We need to address issues of crime etc first before we can give Big Bro the middle finger.

If someone has the know how to make these games again.. I have the processor/space speed to host it and all the tools u need to develop it.
Interactive is my ability to to block out articles by buffoons like you Jon. Watching you write a book, or any of your articles is in no way interactive. The same goes for watching actors prepare their speeches, we didn't get to decide what they would say.
I guess our definition of interactive differs, watching you write, or watching people backstage is about as interactive as going to the zoo and watching a tiger in a cage. Sure you see him eating lunch, but you don't get to get to pick what he eats, the zookeeper does.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go and turn your filter back on. You did a great job with, voices from the hellmouth.. this is just pathetic.
I just sent news.com a news tip (the link is there on the website). Just email: tips@news.com. I doubt one feed will get their attention but if a lot of us tell news.com, or cnet to talk about this letter from O'Reilly it will educate the non-technical people about what amazon is doing.
I've talked with people who use amazon.com but aren't technically savvy or keep upto date with all this news, their source of information is cnet, news.com, cnn.. not slashdot or oreilly.org.
It's these type of people that amazon is trying to cater to, it's because the number of people like them who don't know any better is higher than the technical community, that amazon doesn't feel any pressure at all. so they lose 1 million technical users.. they still have 20 million nontechnical users, buying books from them.. they're willing to take the loss.
reduce the price of CD's.. why would anyone want to pay $18.99 for a new CD at Sam Goody's, when they know they can get the same quality for free or even if I pay $3.99 or whatever some of those new mp3 selling sites charge you. Most of the CD's I've bought over the past 5 years, I only like 4 out of 12 songs.. paying $18.99 or even $15.99 is a rip-off. These people need to realize that MP3 is their competition, and their enemy...fight it on it's merits or lack there of, not because it's costing you money.. thats like AT&T saying everyone who uses Sprint or MCI is a pirate because when the customers switched from AT&T to MCI AT&T lost money, so obviously they're bad.
The RIAA could use all the money they spent on calculating how much they lost to MP3s on finding a format better than MP3 or in making the price of CD's a lot cheaper.. CD's still have their advantages right now.. but if I can find a song for free and download it and burn it on to my own CD, why should I even bother to go to a overpriced store ? This old mentality by the MPAA and the RIAA sickens me.. they are like little chidlren refusing to put on a sweater or wear warm clothes when it's -25 celsius outside, just because they liked the summer and hope they winter will go away because they don't like Winter, and because they want it that way.
ehh but.. what about non windows people.. i don't foresee a port of WMA to linux or mac or bsd.. anytime soon.... people can get on the internet with linux boxes.. but to watch any streamin videos on broadcast.com or yahoo.com.. they need software that is not available for linux.. with high speed access comin to more towns.. ms can use this to make windows users not switch.. and new users not to opt for anything besides windows.. a lot of people in the world don't know much bout the internet and streaming.. they just see.. oh i can see it in windows.. and i can't in linux.. so boring. my.02
yes quite a few actually. oh and I kissed them before I got this neat job. and I kiss them after too. I have grown as a person.. but I've become a better person.
I know there is, and I do enjoy it. Thats just the thing, I don't work 80 hours/week. I have the time to enjoy things, I have the time to play. I don't have to worry bout how much things cost anymore. Thats the beauty of it. I always stop and smell the roses. I am enjoying my success.
Ha, Would he rather we smoke pot, snort crack, and shoot heroine like all the yuppy Stock Brokers I see everyday on Wall Street ?. I don't understand how anyone can put down being rich, without being rich themselves. I program because I enjoy it, I don't own a startup company, but I work for one who will have it's IPO soon. I plan on becoming filthy rich with it, but I don't plan on leaving. I enjoy what I do, I enjoy the smart people I work with. I'm 21 and 14 days old, but currently I make more money than a lot of these people who report on the IT Industry, or people who always liked putting me down. In High School I didn't have a car, and my friends made fun of me, now I have a brand new fully loaded 99 Nissan Altima(sure it's not a BMW, but how many 21 year olds BUY an $18,000 car with cash?). I still have more money in my bank account than a lot of the "jocks" and "cool" people make in one year.
I bought a new entertainment system and everything, the coolest thing about it is that I can afford the things I want. But I don't want a lot of things, I'm not flashy or anything, but I can buy nice clothes. I worked hard for it, I worked hard to know what I know, now if I'm looked down upon for working hard and enjoying the fruits, then screw you. Try working hard yourself. I've earned everything I got, I wasn't awarded anything by the liberal government that wants to take my hard earned money and give to people who like to enjoy "working the system" and collect unemployment, and welfare. Ugh.. i'll stop now.
and you DO realize that NT is made by MS. ? the post was a jab at MS's attitude that if anything MS doesn't run on the chip, then it's not worth having. Wether it was NT or 9X. They feel they can do anything they want to and all chip manufacturers and other companies will follow them like trained puppies. It's time they realized that if MS doesn't run on something, doesn't mean it won't be sucessful. And that marketing alone will not save them. Quality is needed too.
I read this same article on the train to my commute to work in Wall Street Journal..i didn't see any credit to zdnet in the paper, and no credit to wall street journal on the zdnet site.. oh well.. Why Kids Kill

I've yet to see anyone to take on the bigger problems in this case. How easy was it for these kids to get automatic weapons? How could they build a massive arsenal of guns and bombs with no one (parents, friends, teachers) noticing? Why did their classmates insist on tormenting and teasing them?
I couldn't have said it any better. everyone is out trying to blame the internet, kids,parents.. no one is even thinking of the question of how these kids got these guns. Why ? because if they do. the finger points right back at themselves. Because so many of them voted to allow guns, so many of them still support the right to bear arms. and these same people want the violence turned down ? why ? it's typical american attitude. they want everyone else to change, except themselves. same thing with the nukes.. all the other countries can't have nuked. but we can. what kind of treaty is that ?
judging by american politics, the argument of americas politicians being stable and focused is crap. they are focused on only one thing and thats more power. they could care less about anything else.
Ummmm hacker is also someone who fouls a lot during a basketball game. But when I call someone a hacker on the basketball court, I seriously am not discussing computers at that time, nor am I discussing golf, or furniture.

Gay..can mean two things.. but when someone is talking about Gay rights.. they aren't talking about the right to be happy and to be merry. They're talkin about rights of faggots(bundle of sticks) or homosexuals.
Before you go around waving your brand new reading skills and the ability to look a word up in a dictionary.. go read up on english, go read up on context.
One word can have an entirely different meaning depending on the context.. lately you hear people saying something or someone is phat.. when you hear it.. it sounds like fat.. are they calling your mother fat or phat ? how do you know ? it's the context in which they speak.

"sysadmin" the principles of security, telling him how it got hacked,
teaching him simple firewall rules, and how to take that goddarned wu_ftpd
out and putting something else in there like nc or pro...
oh and i also had to teach him how to do a linux install and partition

sysadmin... and u know what happened next ? the sysadmin is still there..
even though his incompetence was obvious in fron tof the ceo of my company

put in and not get compensated for it... no thanks or anything.. oh no

a nice bunch of kernel hackers/developers from india.. but poverty and the need to meet basic necessities will hinder that process.. indians are great programmers (just ask me i'm an indian
well i doubt anyone here will doubt that india has produced some great programmers
