Finding Jobs at apple.. Linux Tech Manager
I think that is the right area that the link should goto. I think its a good thing(tm) that apple is realizing that their little mac os (-8) isnt the best thing in the world. With them realizing that linux plays a large role in computing, and is also used widly on their boxes, I think that possibly the mac versions of linux / osx could move forward a lot faster giving a lot of enhancements and help the mac version of linux prosper.
Kinda wish they would clean up that open source license though
A LITTLE MORE ON THE DEATH STAR 09:50 PST 24 MAR 1999 Hey, thanks to everyone who's written in voicing their support for UF in the upcoming litigation. I have to make a couple of things clear, however. 1) At this point I can't divulge who it is, and maybe hinting was a bad idea. 2) Media attention right now isn't appropriate, so contacting Reuters might do harm. 3) I promise to keep you all updated on this. I'm waiting for a registered letter that will confirm the e-mail. Apparently I'll be getting it soon.
THE EVIL EMPIRE HAS REARED ITS UGLY HEAD 08:25 PST 24 MAR 1999 I can not believe the e-mail I got earlier today. It's from you-know-who's legal department. For legal reasons I can't reproduce the entire letter, but here's the gist of it: "You will cease and desist all negative connotations within your cartoon regarding [our client], or we will initiate a suit to claim damages for libel and defamation." Not only does this *irk* me, I'm going to call their bluff. Don't be concerned folks; my own lawyers say they don't have a leg to stand on, but for reasons not entirely clear to me I can't mention my accusers by name until proceedings are under way. I'm sure you can figure out *who* it is I mean.
I'd assume by the first (date wise) reference that the "evil empire" is usually microsoft. But put together with the 2nd message title, "Death Star" it almost makes you think its someone associated with Starwars, and with that long segment about it, it almost makes me wonder, there havent been any Microsoft parities in a while. Its not FreeBSD, his current parity, he has USED WITH PERMISSION stuff, and I'm sure its not one of the Linux distros:)..
My guesses are: Microsoft or Lucus Arts... Stan "Myconid" Brinkerhoff
The Win32 version of Mozilla 5 sucks IMHO. It lacks any additional features that Netscape Navigator 4.x has, and offers very little functionability. It loads slow, and takes forever to load up pages. Im sorry to say it, but at this point IE5 has it beat hands down in speed, and usefulness.
]] Heh. A cow-orker went to a VB development conference where a 3rd party vendor had come up with a way to remove clippy permanently. He got a standing ovation from the other developers.:-)
I do believe that Microsoft released some code that did this. Stan "Myconid" Brinkerhoff
CDDB is a database that programs can access over the internet to get the title of a cd, the track names and such using a serial number (or something related) that differs amung different cd titles. Programs like the Windows 98 PLUS cdrom player, or there is one called (spelling not included -- its close to it anyways) Quatrosum CD player do this. Music Match 3 (also for windows) will take the track names right before you copy the track to mp3 from the server. It just makes it easier for you to get the cd name and track names instead of having to enter them yourself.
>How can a company "own" a format? Sure, a company can own a *trademark* (like IrDA) and charge for use of the trademark; but I've never heard of anyone "owning" a data format. This is bizarre.
Maybe theyre talking about owning the system that it uses to gather whatever it uses to reference the cd names. Dunno.
How come a Pentium with MMX isn't any faster than a Pentium without MMX? This has a similar answer as the FPU question above. In short there seems to be no way to apply any of the MMX instructions to our advantage. Right now none of the Bovine clients attempt to make use of MMX and we believe any use of the MMX instruction set will result in slower clients rather than faster ones. However, like the FPU question, there has been some recent discussions that suggest that this may not necessarily be the case (MMX instructions are also pipelined separately from integer instructions). If anyone can develop an RC5-64 core that takes advantage of the Pentium's MMX instruction set for an overall client speed boost we would be very interested in hearing from them! To aid in your efforts the x86 core code has been made available and can be downloaded from http://altern.com/rguyom/.

As far as the "Death Star" reference, I'd say that this strip and those around it give a pretty clear indication as to whom he is referring.
You made up my mind.. heh..
Down with Microsoft!
