Oh but the Soviet Union was the enemy while Japan is an ally? Don't you see? If one of our citizens, or allied nation's citizens dies while traveling in a remote and/or desolate country we are more likely to hear about it than a foreigner of a country deemed hostile to us dying in our own countries. In a way the foreigner in question is not that important so it's ok to make insensitive jokes about it, or so they think.

I totally agree that this is censorship. I live in Venezuela and the government considered the Simpsons inappropriate for a morning show so it got replaced by Baywatch. The official reason was "Televen (the network) presumably could infringe the broadcasting prohibitions during said schedule with messages that are a threat to the integral formation of children and teenagers." So I guess it's alright to make you stupid and have all the girls have a perfect role model of how breasts should be, but having a little humor is way out of line. Besides the funny part of it all is that kids are actually at school at 11 AM so the law is completely absurd.

I think the main difference and why most of the focus goes to the radiation issues is that we understand that even though there was an awful lot of people that died during the quake and the tsunami, those are natural incidents. Radiation on the other hand is something we choose to be part of or not plus the consequences of a nuclear disaster stay with us for an extended period of time.

I'm not against nuclear energy but if everybody uses a car and the car keeps crashing, everybody is going to question the safety of using such technology. That way carmakers keep doing research on how to make the car safer. In a way this is what happens after each nuclear incident. It teaches us how to tackle this very powerful energy source but still try to be careful about it.

I guess you could argue that living in a seismic area is a matter of choice too, but then again if you were born someplace it's hard to break the cultural and family ties unless you really have better opportunities elsewhere.

You obviously have never developed in a Mac. The fact that Unix tools don't run as well is like complaining that Cygwin is proof that package management sucks in Windows. The "package" in a Mac is called a bundle and it's both ingenious and simple at the same time. The bundle is the reason why installing and uninstalling an app in a Mac is as simple as dragging and dropping the app icon to the Applications folder.

As far as serious web hosting goes, who in their right mind would use expensive and premium hardware for an operation with very low margins. Hell, even Windows is having a hard time to compete against Linux in that area, unless you need .NET stuff. But the Xserve was used and much appreciated in scientific labs and even companies where it was nice to have a server that could handle mission critical stuff without the price of a Sun or SGI server. Again, the problem with the server space is that everybody realized that is way cheaper to get a bunch of x86 machines tied together with Linux. That is a major reason why companies like the aforementioned SGI and Sun found themselves in deep trouble and had to focus on niche markets instead.

He is just stupid in the sense that if he likes Linux so much, then he could simply install Linux in the Mac, which I have to say used to be all the rage with YellowDog and Gentoo PPC. Even if you think the hardware is overpriced, I still have to see a PC laptop that has a suspend mode that works as well as the Mac does, even when running Linux. Sure, the Mac is expensive, and so is a Porsche, and you would be mad to call a car like that a piece of crap, even if you can get a Mustang for less.

The problem is that terrorism is the extreme way of making a point and is likely to be used a lot from now on, and not only by international organizations but also local and regional groups. Besides, terrorism nowadays caters to a lot of issues, like shooting a politician, while such incidents would be called a murder before, as in was the case with Kenneddy's assassination.

Therefore I'm in favor of approving legislation to make such data logging illegal.

Chrome is one of the best browsers out there and Firefox in general does not represent a threat to them since it defaults to Google. So if Microsoft didn't come up with IE9, they will slowly be finding themselves surrounded by the very tactics they used to do to the now defunct Netscape, especially when it comes to promoting Bing. At this point the only competition Google has are regional search engines and Bing, more or less. So just by having an awesome product, they have created a defacto monopoly that has entrenched so much in our lives, as Windows has done on the PCs we buy. Yes, you can use competing products, but that does not hide the fact that they are the market leaders by far, and will keep leading it in the short term at the very least. Try to get rid of every single Google product in your life, and unless you live in Russia (Yandex) or China (Baidu), most likely you will find yourself exploring new frontiers.

In the XBox you have to pay a monthly fee to play online games where as in the PS3 is completely free. If Microsoft is the only player in town in that particular case then we would be in a world of hurt. Luckily, having options pushes Microsoft to do the right thing, even if it doesn't end up doing most of the time. To me, that's what Linux and free software is really all about, more about options instead of being a much superior product.

I remember stories of people trying to be smart-asses by asking prospective employees if they knew by asking if they knew about some random fact and discarding people who either didn't knew or didn't agree with their views. I have had to deal with companies who would discard you right away if you didn't live in the place where they do business, that is even if you tell them that you can start working the next day and are willing to relocate and cover all expenses. This in general would make you think twice about working in a place where they judge people based on a whim, but if you don't have a job, then by all means get rid of .NET in the resume you send to Expensify. That way everybody is happy and you might be on your way to land a job. When there aren't many options people have to deal with a lot of crap, including stuff like this.
