They are scientists. More to the point, they used Applied Science. That they don't follow the traditions of academia is one thing, but they do use the scientific method to bring solutions to everyday issues.
Bah, this is just bashing from people that cannot even understand a new culture developing in front of their very eyes, therefore anybody who uses technology extensively must be very sick. Right.
I just used the system when applying for a visa and thought it was pretty neat. I know the image detection works that way since I was doctoring images in the Gimp and just uploading it to the Test your Picture section to see how good it was. And it is really good:). It even detects when the borders of your face have been retouched. Try it out when you can.
A government agency changes its website to the usual CMS/Jquery plugin with nice graphics interface that gets installed into most websites these days. How is this news?
I'd rather read about the efforts of the State Department, their website looks better imho, and they have pretty neat technology when it comes to visa applications. They have this image detection routine that will detect if you are wearing glasses, or if the picture has the wrong proportions based on the frame of your face and the frame of the image. They even have the barcode that you scan to get a mobile app. Wouldn't that be something worthy of this news site?
I respectfully disagree. Fragmentation is becoming an issue and it's being reflected on the complaints of many programmers. They pretty much point out that developing for iOS is a lot easier than developing for the myriad of Android versions. That and the fact that the Apple's App Store sells more really doesn't leave too much room for Google to make it harder for everybody else.
He is a scientist in that field. What part don't you understand? Of course he recognizes the value for the general public. Why had a designer to retouch the images if they didn't? He's just saying that "with remote sensing better looking means nothing"
They were simpler compared to today's standard but back then doing stuff like that was kind of like rocket science. First of all, there was very little documentation on how to do things. Most professional were self-taught individuals and it was hard for a company to hire talent. They pretty much had to be on the lookout for good shareware developers so they could enlist their talent to their product line. That was the case with Ken Silverman and even John Carmack and Tim Sweeney to some extent.
So let me put this in perspective, the challenges you face today is coordinating a team of developers to do things right but the code per se is not a big issue. The 3D APIs is straightforward, most companies license a game engine, the music gets produced by composers with full orchestras. Everything is standard and documented. I don't know if you have seen the kind of hacks that those aforementioned three had to put in their code sometimes but here is a sample: http://www.codemaestro.com/reviews/9. Also stuff you had to do before since you had very low memory and crappy graphics device is totally irrelevant today. Things like color palette rotation, inline assembly optimization, using bitwise operators as much as you can instead of regular operators even if nobody could understand the code afterwards, etc. Today with true color there is no need for color palette rotation, compiler optimizations are pretty good so that you don't need to do most of the assembly or bitwise stuff since the compiler does it for you, plus as I said, there is version control, no need to program against different graphics cards and no awful DOS4GW with their int10h crap.
I honestly don't want my kid to be the cool kid, that could lead him/her to be an arrogant prick, prone to get bad grades, prone to drugs among other things. Sure it has some advantages, but from a young age they need to learn that everybody can contribute to society in their own way and that having good friendships is more important than being surrounded by people that really do not care about you.
Nah, it's not just the fonts. It isn't that hard nowadays, just take a look at http://www.blogger.com/template-editor.g?blogID=4010125631613458355 for designs that look just right. Hard contrast, as opposed to common belief, is actually pretty bad when it comes to the screen. That was why computer shells had gray text on a black background until recently (among other color combinations).
In fact some people argue that the view that WordPerfect had with that blue and gray, is something that makes MS Word look like a retard's project. I don't know if they still do it today but that point to me, is perfectly valid.
So remember, right colors, right fonts (and size) plus if you use trendy layouts, that can only help you look like a champ. I have a relative who majored in Graphics Design and they taught them a lot about colors and one of the few things I learned is that, more often than not, pale shades make for more pleasant reading. Check this site for a list of colors:
The XBox360 has a pretty neat procedure to allow independent developers into a market that has traditionally been pretty tight, so it's worth a read to see if they were able to implement it in the same way.
But I agree, when it comes to smartphones, the situation is much easier since anybody with a PC or Mac can get into the market easily.
That the game could be crappy story/gameplay wise is one thing, but Nintendo would not allow what we see in the PC gaming world nowadays: games full of bugs that make you feel like you are some kind of quality assurance technician working for those companies. And let me tell you another thing, I wholeheartedly believe that the programmers back in the day had to work their ass off pulling stuff in really underpowered hardware, with no niceties. Before, a company was able to program with optimized assembly code something like Mario Bros 3 and today, in the age of awesome debuggers, code profilers, source control, object-oriented programming and what not, we get this products that are rushed out of the door. I guess we have to thank the Internet for that. With the XBox360 I saw how that patch craze is coming with a vengeance to the console world. Part of that Nintendo Seal of Quality is that they would not allow something like EA to exist. You could only develop up to five titles per year.
Other than that, with Nintendo you get the guarantee that you get a nice, clean and fun games with the system, plus more or less affordable hardware. You could get an original NES system with 2 controllers, zapper and two games for $100, and today the Wii is still the cheaper of the big three by $100. If you ask me which system I would get for my kids I would chose Nintendo without blinking. The other systems expose too much unnecessary violence, sex and gore and their kid users kind of remind me of that tech kid in the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. I have seen 10 year olds both in Canada and the US with stuff like Grand Theft Auto in their system, and since not all parents are created equal, then the kid that does have it is pretty much the cool kid in the block. That's like a big social issue to me.
These companies fail to realize a very important detail about BitTorrent. Just like it happened in Linux when it came to new distro releases and in a game like Warcraft when there is a new patch to download, I have yet to see anything more efficient than BitTorrent to download content. Everybody wanting to get a piece of something needs to contribute with something. That has to beat setting up your own CDN architecture since not everybody is a freaking company willing or able to pay for such premiums.
I understand that bandwith doesn't grow on trees and I'm much better signing a contract where they say, here, have 200 GB a month in any way you see fit, than getting "unlimited" or worse limited bandwidth with throttling issues. In any case, I really believe this market in question is in dire need of regulation of some sort. So push your ellected officials to do something about it.
Some people don't have that option in their area, therefore legislation is really needed to fix this issue. Kind of like how it is illegal to sell rotten food in a restaurant.
Like you are? Corporate America has owned your ass far longer than their corporate equivalent in most countries. All the fighting back in your case is about switching to another company, which is not radically different from the other, since you consider government intervention ugly and evil and the government and lobbysts are very happy to go along with that.
Perhaps you should try to be entertained by other means instead of making fun of other people, whatever the case? It's not that hard, really. Seinfeld in a way was like that, making fun out of ordinary situations.
Where I live we make fun of people from a certain part of Spain called Galicia, kind of like the jokes about the poles. Once you travel over there and actually have friends or neighbors that are from that region, then it really stops being funny, at least for me. So yes, we become more civilized by this cruel evolution as in the dictionary definition of civility:
a : civilized conduct; especially : courtesy, politeness b : a polite act or expression
If you still want to be a barbarian, by all means you are free to do it, but don't complain when educated people look at you in scorn.
Haha, yeah I can see this offending the sensibilities of quite a few. Bah, they should just change the channel if they don't like it. It's not like we live in an era where we have like 2 or 3 channels at most. I consider most reality shows stupid but I have no right to remove content like that just because I don't like it.
Kind of hard to target the wrong sub.
I would call them Applied Scientists. That is the people who use science to solve everyday issues instead of studying fundamental sciences.
You have any idea of how many failed experiments Edison had under his belt? I don't see your point.
They are scientists. More to the point, they used Applied Science. That they don't follow the traditions of academia is one thing, but they do use the scientific method to bring solutions to everyday issues.
I have to tell you that if it smells bad you have some kind of fungus and you should see a doctor. And no, I'm not joking.
Bah, this is just bashing from people that cannot even understand a new culture developing in front of their very eyes, therefore anybody who uses technology extensively must be very sick. Right.

Algorithm, I has it. Transfer funds and I send algorithm, no problem.

I meant that the Wii is cheaper by $100, not that it costs $100.
No dude, I'm talking about XNA stuff.

We should start a new Slashdot and return control to the geeks. It actually wouldn't be that hard to get some users to
Don't just put that in your sig, do something about it and then we can all bash you for how backwards and stupid your website might be.
Some people don't have that option in their area, therefore legislation is really needed to fix this issue. Kind of like how it is illegal to sell rotten food in a restaurant.
The Canadians aren't used to fighting back.

Exactly. On other news we hit some civilians by mistake in Afghanistan and here are the shocking pictures...
