  1. Re:Tenino Telephone [Tenino, WA] on Experiences with Alternate Local Phone Companies? · · Score: 0

? I never had to leave my metropolitan desk. My office comes equiped with TELEPHONES, so making the call to get that office hooked up required only 11 keystrokes on my phone, from any location attached to the PSTN. Google it, you'll be surprised what you can learn.
    Thanks for playing, anyway.

These people knocked my socks off. I called them up on a Friday asking for DSL for my company's office, there. Surprisingly, we were within range and everything looked like it was going to come off great. Then she dropped the bomb on me:

"Now, you understand that this may not be ready until Tuesday, right?"

Tuesday?! That's only 2 business days for DSL! Believe it! It doesn't have to be 2 months!

  3. Low Speed Broadband? on How Broad is Broadband? · · Score: 0

I can understand the complaint against qualifying it as 'high speed', though. It sounds like 'high speed broadband' would put your service at the upper end of performance. If someone sold me a high performance car, I wouldn't expect a rusted out 1967 VW Beetle with expensive tires. "High Speed" qualifies the broadband. They were totally right to do this.

Blah, blah, blah. If the businesses saw the need to protect their customers then they would have already done it, already. They're not concerned with protecting the privacy of their customers because THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE. Why should they go to the expense when the only reprecussions to that data getting away from them is an 'Oops' out of them. What a lot of knee-jerk hot air. This guy doesn't want to fight it, his question was about how to COMPLY with it.

Actually, in November 1941, Southern Oregon and Northern California DID secede, creating the little country of Jeffersonia. On Thursdays. For a month. On Thursdays, for most of November, 1941, they seceded and blocked traffic and had picnics. Then Pearl Harbor came and they got back to work, I guess. I'm serious. At first I got a big chuckle out of this. But when I went readiing further, it sounded like just a bunch of hill billies killing time on Thursdays. My opinion? Get 20,000 independent-minded people together and you're going to get 20,000 different directions that they think they should go and it will decend into chaos. $0.02

You never know what's going to happen. If he doesn't travel now, will he be around to travel, later? There is no better time than NOW, whenever that might be. Don't wait until you're dead to do the important things. It's a lot harder to do after you're dead.

It does happen, I know people it's happened to. But it didn't heppen to anyone with this guy's stated qualifications. Knocking over a little old lady for her pension check happens a helluva lot more frequently. 2 Points for imagination.

My dictionary doesn't limit 'Abbreviation' to those daffynitions. I clipped this from it, though:

The act or product of shortening. or...
A shortened form of a word or phrase used chiefly in writing to represent the complete form, such as Mass. for Massachusetts or USMC for United States Marine Corps.

Really, some interpretation (independent thought, if you will) is required for adequate communication.
