You also have to consider that you can be legally blind, mentally retarded, and have frequent seizures and still get a drivers license in this country as long as you have a doctor sign a slip.
Roads like that in many other countries don't even have speed limits.
Those two statements do not mesh well. The sometimes no-speedlimit Autobahn in Germany is possible because the standards to get a license are higher. Lower the limit on who can drive (and how they are trained) and you (we in the US) must accept lower limits on driving speeds.
According to another article at AdAge.com (the same periodical as the main story comes from):
CINCINNATI (AdAge.com) -- Recent internal research by Procter & Gamble Co. indicates that consumers who fast-forward through ads with digital personal video recorders such as TiVo still recall those ads at roughly the same rates as people who see them at normal speed in real time.

Can't link/copy the whole article, because they charge a few $$ for it.
I dropped them when the limit changed. They had sooo much esoteric stuff.
A zillion George Carlin CD's Oodles of old jazz (Monk, Mingus, etc) old blues (Lightnin Hopkins)
The Windows client seemed to work OK, until they announced the limit change. Then...all of a sudden downloading an entire album was problematic. Lots of people grabbing all they could before they cut off? Maybe. I know I did. Took me about a week to get all of a 15 CD set of T. Monk.
The new owners are fools. I wonder how many people dropped them last month...
You see, the #1 UI wisdom that M$ will never get is that different people have different wants and needs.
Maybe that's why, in Outlook, there are no less than 12 different ways to sort your Inbox. And if you really want to go out on the edge, there is a Customize option, which basically allows you to do whatever you want.
Cost of living in Country A is 1000. Cost of living on Country B is 500. Presumably, you have a job in Country A.
In the interest of efficiency, should *your* job be ported to Country B? You, personally. And when your job is ported to Country B, you personally have to train the Country B personto do you job.
That is what's happening. IBM just announced a shift of 4500 jobs to Country B. Is it still efficient if it's your job?
I think what he was talking about is the actual directional requirements. If your apt/condo is on the 8th floor, on the north side of a 20 story building, yes, you may in fact be SOL.
Sure, you can hang the dish, but no matter how mush you want it to, it will not work.
Its really the first industrial strength version to compete agaisnt the big Unixies like Solaris and Aix.
For a desktop, real time support.
Its a big upgrade with mostly server oriented features but it should be a nicer desktop OS
Ahhh...so NOW it's ready for enterprise and desktop level use. But isn't that been the party line for a couple of years now? "Linux is ready" "No reason not to change right now" "You're a fool if you don't" "Get the M$ monkey off your back" "Why would anyone not run it everywhere?"
But remember do not install it if you do not have a real up to date distro! Module tools have been upgraded and are incompatible with older versions. You can wreck your system if your not carefull.
After turning my head upside down watching a Saudi enter information in RTL in Word, in Arabic, faster than I could in English, I'd say that's a definate yes.
What conclusions could they possibly draw from my verbal answer to "What is your annual income?".
They don't care about your actual income. They're just looking for a range, and if you can give a valid answer.
For instance, a Turk comes to the US, purporting to be an American, and is asked his job and his annual income. He might hem and haw for a few seconds doing the conversion in his head (strike 1) And he may well be off by a factor of 10 or 100.
The body wouldn't exist except for the fact that they stuck a cockpit where the two wings meet.
And as a container for the engine(s), fuel, and weapons, and all the computers, etc. Pretty much like any other aircraft. The B-2 is lacking tail surfaces, though. The -117 merges the usual 3 tail surfaces into two.
The F-22 is designated to replace the F-16 in whole. The JSF/F-35 is designated to replace the F-15
Actually, it's the other way around. F-22 will be the air superiority (F-15), and the JSF (Joint Strike Fighter) for smaller, ground attack(F-16/18) and Harrier replacement.
Since the 30's, the advances in flight have been pretty much of the non-visible sort. Except for the actual engine (invention of the jet), an F-15 is conceptually not much different than a P-51. Wings, body, pilot, engine(s). Or DC-3 and 747.
The real advances have been things you don't see. Better control surfaces, more efficient, faster engines. Fly by wire, computer controlled landings, far better navigation systems.
In the military world, we have aircraft that can accept a reprogramming of the target while in flight. There are weapons that can, even after being dropped, target a different area all the way to the impact point.
And then there are the things you really don't see. Small, unmanned aircraft (UCAV's), all but invisible to radar aircraft (B-2, F-117, F-22), realtime data links. The B-2 is almost identical in size to the Northrup Flying Wing of 1949. But a significant improvement in function.
In short, there ave been amssive improvements, you just can't readily see them, because the basic airplane shape is non-mutable.
Should the lowly bulldozer, used to build lowcost housing for the disadvantaged, be frowned upon because it is an outgrowth of a tank? Or the helicopter, used to pluck an unlucky hiker from a deep ravine?
Or how about the elephant? Used to carry Hannibal's troops across the Alps.
How about we condemn the Chinese, for inventing gunpowder and rockets in the first place? After all, the tank, helicopter, airplane, and even the elephant are merely delivery devices. Except in rare circumstances, the actual killing is done by the explosive.
Why isn't Marconi on your list? Military use of radio is what allows them to kill over long distances.
We could go on, but I'm sure you get the point by now.
Well...because we can, and it makes an interesting afternoon...:)
But damn, people. All the suggestions of "2nd hard drive" "boot into Knoppix" "VMWare and run XP in the background" "hack this, hack that" WHY BOTHER?
This machine is not aimed at you, nor anyone you know( ok...maybe your granny. but if you were a good grandson, you'd have hooked her up by now.). This is aimed at the current non-PC people. And as a way to get them into the virtual world, it's OK.
If/when a way is found to circumvent the adware, phone home routine, etc...the advertisers will get no return on their money. One by one, they will pull out, Metronomy will kill the program for lack of funds, and a lot of people will never get their free PC. The only ones that may possibly benefit will be the ones that get in early, as they may be allowed to keep the machine after Metonomy goes under.
Let's leave this one alone to sink or swim on its own accord. Personally, I think it'll sink, but we don't need to push it off the end of the pier.
THis is merely a way for AOL to try to keep a few of the customers that it has been losing recently. Standard AOL is too expensive and/or too slow. People have been jumping ship for faster or cheaper service.
So, if they can offer a cut down service (that may appear somewhat faster) they can keep a few of those jumpers, and stave off the financial debacle for a while.
Keep in mind folks that this has absolutely nothing to do with September 11.
So I guess you missed this little tidbit. "The most conclusive evidence comes in a highly detailed list of intelligence reports revealed last month in the Weekly Standard. Senior Iraqis were said to have traveled to Sudan in the mid-1990s to teach bin Laden's operatives how to make sophisticated truck bombs. Terrorists subsequently used such bombs to hit targets in Saudi Arabia and at two U.S. embassies in Africa. "
It's the war on Iraq that was started many years ago by the father
Ahh...it comes into focus now. You believe that Bush Sr. invaded Iraq before Saddam went over the border into Kuwait. And got many, many other countries to go along with him. Gotcha.
Simply because the developers in your org are clueless does not automatically mean that Access is not a viable product. Access makes a very good prototyping tool, and as a front end to a more robust backend. Oracle/SQLServer/whatever. Is it easy to screw up? Sure. It makes people think they can build a db app. People who no not understand the actual concepts involved in building a secure, stable app.
Now what if the power goes out inbetween the steps? Now what if the DB is Access? Answer: Nothing, if the whole system was designed and written properly.
People complain, but what's the real problem here? Why are people so afraid of image recognition cameras if their picture is not in the database?
With these systems, you picture will be in the database. You just won't have any data in the "offender" field.
I've never molested, assaulted, or robbed anyone. I know my picture is not in the database. Is yours?
Are you sure? Do you have a drivers license? Ever gotten a security clearance for a job?
Sex offenders. Most known pedophiles have court orders barring them from approaching a school, let alone entering one, but how about when they move to another state and try to become a teacher at your kid's school? Is that funny? It happens.
Better background checks.
When they want to put the camera in my home, I'll be worried.
Ok...everywhere except actually inside your home. School, work, your car, pointing at your front door. I'm sure you wouldn't mind a camera pointed at your chair at work, just to make sure you're doing nothing wrong.
You also have to consider that you can be legally blind, mentally retarded, and have frequent seizures and still get a drivers license in this country as long as you have a doctor sign a slip.

hmm..maybe not just yet.
None of the people responsible for systematically destroying the infrastructure of Iraq are now benefiting in any way from it's reconstruction.
Very true. Saddam Hussein is not benefitting from the reconstruction of Iraq.
Thank you.
The reconstruction of Iraq has largely been contracted out to anybody who cared to...
...actually take the risk and do what needed to be done.
does Windows/Office support Arabic well?

"Job?"
"computer programmer"
"annual income?"
[let's see...in Turkey, that's 57,000,000,000 lira - in US$ that's...] "4,000!"(strike 2)
"Right, buddy...lets go."
57 billion TRL is ~$40,000

...except from a mailing list...
Exactly.
emusic.com was like this. (Almost) all you can eat, $10/month, straight mp3 (no DRM).
Sadly, they got bought and the new overlords downgraded it to same price, 40 tracks per month. I expect a LOT of people jumped ship. I know I did.

Pay cash,
And the tire guy merely records your car license plate and/or VIN in the transaction. Same result.
