We've been seeing 3D display technologies for 50 years. Some have been better than others, but they have all suffered from the same flaw. Namely, that using them for any length of time results in a headache/eye strain. The article notes near the end that this technology is not free of the problem.
I'm not saying it might not be usefull in the same applications it's usefull in now, but untill I can use one for 6 hours with no eyestrain, I don't think I want one.
Yeah, yeah, you're funny too, but the OP was making a joke about the NASA mars explorer that was lost because of incorrect imperial to metric conversion.
I think (and I'm not being flippant) that the correct grammer is the one that doesn't get you scorned. Meaning that the english taught in school is neither 'right' or 'wrong', it's just the english taught in scools. I'm from the UK, and took a while to get used to many structures and such used in the U.S.
I wouldn't presume to speak for the reat of the world, but I don't care for your shitty, holier-than-thou atitude. The OP was;
a)correct
b)entertaining
You, on the other hand, just come of sounding pathetic.
IIRC, it uses a super-low density foam type material, that it simply exposes to the atmosphere when it gets really high. The assumption being, of course, that any dust and stuff captured is on its way down, not up.
And I'm more than happy to wait 6 hours while my gentoo system compiles a system to run UT2003 on.:-)
Seriously, this shows up the problem behind this idea, there are far too many hardware combos on the i386 platform to present a simple, bootable enviroment for.
IMHO, think this whole 'Chances of Life' equation some scientists mention (Drake,Sagen) and the media eats up is fundamentally flawed.
They all fall victim to anthromorphism. We know of one place where life (or intelligence) exists, Earth. If we take Earth out of the equation, like we should as good, unbiased scientists, all we have evidence of a cold, harsh, sterile universe with no life in it. Occam's razor says that our conclusion should be that it's unlikely life could exist at all.
So really, the presence or absence of harsh ionizing radiation on the surface of Europa doesn't affect the chances of anything. Anyway, I'm willing to contribute some tax dollars to finding more info. (ideally in the form of incentives to private enterprise).
I have an old Classic that I can't think of any usefull (computing) application for. OTOH, if I had a Quadra or somesuch around, I'd slap BSD on it and add it to the collection. The toolshed still has no computer.
This is a tough problem that must be solved if we're going to get our dreamgames.
Sony's 'grid computing' concept is one possible solution. The concepts behind Doom III's MP code looks interesting also, but might not scale at all.
For the example of an outdoor massive battle, only the players/NPC's near you need to be replicated all the time. Unfortunatly, any client side tricks like this also limit what can be done in the gamem so your point still stands. We need much greater bandwidth and IO.
I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but here goes;Carmack is not the worlds hottest coder.
To clarify; most of JC's inovations were not his own, but the results of research done by others. His skill was in seeing what could be done with it. In other words, he benifited greatly from others work. This is his way of repaying the favour.
This is an interesting look at this on the IEEE website.
Carmack (and ID) are great assets to OpenSource thinking.
I'll admit that it can seem arbitrary at times, but a skilled player can beat nethack consistently, so there is some sense to it.
Praying to your deiety is only one way to avoid starvation. There's also polymorphing, summon monster and eating your towel. (not much nutritional value there, but...)
Eat everything you can, but only when you're hungry or almost hungy (try to avoid becoming full, it'll improve your cons).
When you find an icebox, it'll usually be full of edibles, but if it's not, spend some time filling it, and remember where it is.
Wearing rings or amulets increases how fast you get hungry, only wear them when needed.
As a last resort, (if you can't pray) you can polymorph yourself into xsomething that doesn't need food (gargoyle) of something that can eat rock (rock mole).
I know all this, but I was playing nethack last night, probably right when this was posted, and I starved, on level 8, on a square with a food ration on it. Ahh, the irony.
No it's not. Do you want your car keys, house key, and work keys to all be the same key? Probably not, because if it was comprimised, you'ld be screwed.
For the same reason, no one with any security sense uses the same password on every account.
When you talking about 3D models, the memory required to hold the frambuffer pales in comparision to the amount needed to hold the models. The OP wasn't making a point about video cards.
I'm not saying it might not be usefull in the same applications it's usefull in now, but untill I can use one for 6 hours with no eyestrain, I don't think I want one.
UT2003/3D would be pretty damn cool, though...
Uh, 3D, ya know? Like depth and all that? Ever seen a 3d movie? Like that.
Come to Vancouver. Same benifits, but it's cheaper and everyone (almost) speaks English.

You might find this link interesting.

From the few anecdotal stories I've heard, you might see around %10 or more in some cases. I'd like to know more.

Doom scared me, Quake really scared me. I can take one look at the screenshots of Doom III and say with confidence "I'm going to pee myself!"

Carbon is yesterday, Coca is tomorrow. I simply can't say enough good things about Coca.
Even if I _am_ wrong, my point still stands, you're not dead untill you're dead, so try things. :)
hack, slash, hack, slash, hack, slash, get weapon/level, repeat. Comparing it to nethack is comparing Hearts to GoFish.
Nethack, OTOH, has the ability to throw me into a raging hissy fit, after starving/boulder trap/etc. I love it.

It rewards out-of-box thinking.

I'm suprised that the ISP's did this for so long and the news didn't leak out.
But few Betas have ever been released that have been this polished. At this point, I could care less when version 1.0 is coming out.
Thank You. So. Much.
I am presently in browser heaven.
