Why did/. have to cover this 3 times in the dev section. I know many non-dev types who jump on point releases as soon as they come out. They should know about this.
I hate to say it, but maybe/. doesn't like stories that make linix look bad.
I hate to agree with you, but the P4 _is_ looking very good right now...HT is just waiting to be expoited by software.
IBM's Power4's look good too, though. Long term trends will shift away from Intel solutions (IMHO).It remains to be seen what the better choice is. The market decides in the end, and that isn't always the best choice.
I have several computers intergrated into my house (meaning behind furniture, under stuff, in closets, etc). I recently spent about an hour moving crap around to free up a cable for my G4, only to find I could have just used the crossover cable in plain view.Damn.
I was wondering about that also. My original predidction for this contest was about 50-60 bytes. The executable shown by that paper does something very simaler.
I also think it would be a more interesting contest if the binary had to do something usefull. That would have meant more interesting optimization.
Carpenters are welcome to use whatever system they want to mesaure bits of wood. For the calculations I do, the fact that there is a sensible relationship between mass, length, volume, temp, etc, makes a lot more sense.
Who the hell cares that the meter is arbitrary? It sure beats Imperial hands down. 5,280 feet in a mile? 12 inches in a foot? 160 square rods in an acre? What the hell is that?
You're right that there are problems to overcome, but many of them have been solved or had new insight point towards a solution. I can't say with any certainty that we won't run into a wall, but work is making progress.
I think also that we are well placed to exploit this tech when it does come along. If they had had a.13 micron chip fab in 1940, they would still be flicking 0's and 1's into it by hand. We know quite a lot about computing and what we could do with quantum computers, and will be better able to find practicle applications.
'Freeish' licenses have often contained restrictions on goverment use, military use, etc. I'm glad that the GPL doesn't allow restrictions like this, but I can see how it might be attractive for certain developers and software.
Anyway, I should get back to my GPL remotely controlled torture device...
I agree. The bit near the end where he compares this to Tivo development is really galling. If you modify a Tivo, you are hacking, and should be respected and encouraged. If you use seq, you are cheating, and should be shot.
OS X comes with iMail, a very capable and slick mailer that I'm sure 90% of Mac buyers use. We might see a sploit for it, but the Unix permisions will keep it from being too bad (i hope).
This is definiatly an exploitable bug, but it's not root access, and any code useing it would be easy to fix.

(snicker) I agree with all of your reasoning, except for the Japan=nowhere,Nebraska bit.
Does this say something about Buena Vista, Disney, the Japanese, or what?
Get 'em while the're cheap, kids!

The Alpha rocked. Nuff said. I'm sorry it's EOL. And I'm sorry there are so many posts who think that little intel boxen are so much better.
Alpha gets added to the list of failed, technicaly better products. The Amiga, Beta video, the Newton, etc.
You've never written a line of code in your life.
I'm just sorry that someone modded you funny when you weren't joking.....
It's really an attractive tech for many reasons, but untouchable because of the Hindenberg.
Lesser footprint on the planet, less crulety, possibly better for you nutritionaly, less exposure to drugs and hormones, etc.
On the other hand meat is so damn tasty though.....If God wanted us to be vegetarian, why did He make animals out of meat?
Now if only I could get my Mac to serve the browser to my X-thin clients.

What the hell do consilidated storage and dumb teminals have to do with security? And your link is broken. Poop on you, JERKASS!!

Ideally before the end of the semester, thanks.
The total cost spent by the west on Afganistan for this year, towards 'rebuilding'. comes out to about $80 U.S an Afgan. Ouch.
There are better places to spend your tax dollars than space stations. I hate to say it , cause I love space stations.....

You'ld think at least NASA would get this.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

And thats the way I like it.
Solaris on x86 boxes would allow easier intergration of workstations with Sun big iron, so it might ensure more hardware purchases in the future.
